7 leather one-pieces in the test
Bar goods in the best quality
Anyone who is on the edge of an incline on the racetrack – and that’s what you want – is at risk of falling at any time. A decent racing leather can protect if the skin is really crisp – i.e. almost too tight. We tested seven leather one-pieces at fair prices.
Thorsten Dentges
02/04/2016
For serious motorcycling on the racetrack, a leather one-piece is definitely recommended. As tailor-made as possible, so that the fit is really right. Because the station wagon has to sit very close to the body, in other words: almost skin-tight. Only then is the best safety guaranteed, especially the protectors should not slip in the event of a fall. Typical weak points are sleeves that are cut too wide in the elbow area and trouser legs that are too wide. We have tested seven upper middle class leather one-pieces between 900 and 1,500 euros for you.

Custom-made products
If instead of the bespoke tailor, the buyer creates a data sheet with body measurements at home, that is tricky. Here are the most important tips for measuring yourself:
- Never measure alone! Measurements accurate to the centimeter are only possible with a helper.
- From 5 mm behind the decimal point, round up to the next centimeter.
- Do not wear sweaters or anything similar thick, just wear functional underwear or a thin T-shirt when taking the measurement.
- Shoulder width: Measure the distance between the seams where the sleeve is sewn on (at the top of the shoulder joint).
- Said shoulder seam point is also the starting point for the measurement of the sleeve length – from there to the slightly protruding ankle on the wrist. Important: Raise the previously extended arm sideways to shoulder height and then form a 90-degree angle forwards with your fist.
- Chest and waist circumference: Do not hold your breath or pull in your stomach! Put on the measuring tape loosely but without play and just keep breathing normally. Note the highest value, repeat the measurement several times and average the values.
- Waist (is often confused with waist circumference!): Cover the belly button with a tape measure and measure the circumference horizontally.
- Stride length: It is essential to measure the inside of the leg! From the crotch (at the base of the legs) to the inner large ankle, stand upright and shoulder width apart.

Final evaluation of the leather one-piece.
No question about it: comparing made-to-measure products with off-the-shelf goods is a particular challenge. The test practice showed, however, that the bottom line is that the leather one-pieces do not differ so clearly from one another. Even with the standard sizes, the leather cutters apparently do their job very well. And great prices are also an argument.
The reasonably priced leather suit from Held wins with great quality and features with good wearing comfort and the best result in the safety criterion. The tailor-made women’s racing suit D2 and Gimoto Racer-R also play in the upper middle class – and that is quite honorable, because as a race fan you can fulfill your dream of individualized racing leather even on a smaller budget.

This is how MOTORRAD tests
Volkmar Jacob
Always hit the mark: shock absorption test in the laboratory.
Where do leather one-pieces feel most comfortable? Stupid question, of course, on the circuit. Our testers from sister magazine PS therefore took the seven suits with them to the Hockenheimring for the practical test. In extensive driving tests on super sports machines (e.g. Yamaha YZF-R1) the fast guys were able to try out all imaginable race-specific driving postures from jerky touchdowns when braking hard to borderline hanging-off. It quickly became apparent which movements the station wagon was restricting the driver. At the same time, ventilation (e.g. through perforations) could be assessed well.
In addition to the fit and comfort, the testers also recorded the comfort when putting on and taking off. Back at home in the warm room, the leather one-pieces (which consist of a not inconsiderable amount of stretch textile material) were cut up and examined for leather thickness, seams, doubling of material and other construction details as well as the equipment with practical bags. On the drop test stand in the laboratory, we finally determined the residual force in the event of hard impacts with an impact energy of 50 joules on the upper material and the protectors underneath.
Seven upper middle class contenders
As is often the case, the recommendation is the golden mean, which is why we looked for seven candidates from the upper middle class in this comparison test. As it turned out, good and very good leather suits can be found between 1,000 and 1,500 euros, with which one can safely go racing.
Bar goods of the best quality from established manufacturers such as the Italians Alpinestars and Dainese, who have dedicated themselves to racing for decades, but also from exotic products such as women and Gimoto, who, despite the middle class, only offer custom-made products. In the case of women, the customer can have himself measured in Assen and Breda in Holland or enter his measurements in a prefabricated data sheet and send it to the manufacturer. This is how it works at Gimoto (Italy), whose German branch in Trier can also carry out on-site measurements.
Opinions are divided when it comes to back protectors
Dainese, Held and Spidi also offer custom-made products from a surcharge of 300 euros. Also interesting for racers: Is it possible to label, can I have my start number or name affixed? All test participants offer this service – for a surcharge – except for Alpinestars.
One more word on the subject of back protectors: Opinions are divided here. Some advocate the philosophy that a back protector should not be part of the station wagon if possible, but should be as close to the body as possible as an independent strap-on protector. This is certainly not a wrong approach. But an integrated protector covers a large area and deeply over the rump, also well. Prerequisite: the leather suit has to fit perfectly. Crisp, just before just short!
