The four-cylinder of the GSX-S 1000 is a “best of both worlds” design. The basis is the K5 engine with, among other things, K8 camshafts.

Weasel-nimble naked bike

Content of

Power-charged nakeds are extremely popular among sports riders, especially on country roads – and not just because they contain a lot of the superbikes. The manufacturers have a lot of them in their range. And now Suzuki is finally following suit and bringing the Suzuki GSX-S 1000.

I.When it comes to sportiness, we haven’t heard from Suzuki for far too long, and certainly not seen any new models. But what great bikes have the Japanese from Hamamatsu brought us over the years. When, for example, the first GSX-R 1000 arrived, the athletes’ faction stood foaming at the dealers, and even today die-hard Suzi fans get glassy eyes when they even talk about the legendary K5. Perhaps there is now another reason to be moved, because this K5 superbike with its powerful and sophisticated four-cylinder engine is the basis of the newly introduced naked bike, the Suzuki GSX-S 1000.

Weasel-nimble naked bike

GSX-S 1000 not. They preferred to put on a big grin and confidently declare that they had the entire market in view and therefore knew exactly who and what they were up against.

The seat feels right, the handlebar lies comfortably in the hand

The result of this extensive “market observation” is now in front of us under a thickly overcast Andalusian sky. The tightly winding roads in the mountains behind Alicante are wet and the news that the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 actually has more juice than the specified 145 hp causes swallowing difficulties at first.

On the other hand, the information that finally a sporty bike from Suzuki has a three-stage traction control that operates with five sensors is reassuring. We want to believe that it can even be switched off, but we prefer not to test it on a wet road. And so we move from the courtyard into the wild labyrinth of curves. The seat feels good, the handlebars with a slight bend lie comfortably in the hand, the knee angle is sporty but not uncomfortable, and the seat of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 leaves enough room for gymnastics – when the slope gets dry.

Really only 145 hp?

The engine runs without any roughness, as we know it from the GSX-R, the gearbox slips perfectly, as is usual for Suzuki, there is no automatic gearshift. When the first dry spots appear, turning the analogue throttle (Ride-by-Wire is only available on request for the next GSX-R 1000) reveals that the really big punch around the bottom is missing. Two-cylinder fetishists would say: typical four-cylinder organs. Correct. But K5 fans will say: Awesome, like the 1000s ten years ago. But: The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 also competes on country roads below 5000 rpm, don’t get it wrong! The cams from the K8 with changed timing give the S a fuller torque in the relevant speed range than is known from the superbike. But from 7000 rpm the air burns again. The one-liter machine briefly announces this start with slight vibrations and then lets it fly properly, accompanied by a very adult sound. 145 hp? That really seems like an understatement!

This basic character of the engine makes the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 a toy for experienced pilots. Anyone who wants to chase away lazy will be surprised. Basically, the four is a piece of cream that can only be blamed for somewhat rough load changes. The handling is anything but disappointing. The beefy look of the front area hides the nimble nature of the GSX-S. When it is really dry on the streets at noon, the new naked bike reveals its country road finesse. It doesn’t just drive in alternating bends, it literally throws itself into it, draws the line with a steady track and – assuming the right gear – sweeps like a whirlwind towards the next challenge. Drop anchor, turn in and around. It’s great – but we would have liked a slightly more snappy appearance from the brakes with the Brembo calipers. Especially when you put it on for the first time, you quickly notice that firm hand pressure is better. The ABS (no, no cornering ABS) regulates late in a really sporty way, even on a wet track you could hardly feel any control pulsation in the lever without really courageous anchoring.

Great fun on dry ground

The TC also worked very subtly. Milled over a restricted area in the wet and turned the gas tap, the yellow display flickered briefly in the cockpit, but there was no sign of serious electronic interference even in level 2 under these conditions – and that without gyro sensors. With the Suzuki GSX-S 1000, the TC data is only recorded by the wheel sensors and those on the throttle valve, transmission and crankshaft.

But back to great fun on dry ground. The longer the journey, the greater the joy of handling the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 and the speeds of the four-cylinder. Dunlop also deserves respect here, because they have redesigned the D214 for the motorcycle and the tire harmonizes wonderfully with the bike. There is no need to put on the brakes, as is so impressively known from its namesake on the Kawasaki Z 1000.

The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 is available from dealers for 12,190 euros

Even in long bends with a lot of lean angle, the tire and, as a result, the motorcycle act perfectly neutrally. The chassis of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 with the fully adjustable fork and the shock absorber with rebound adjustment neatly irons away gentle waves. A fully adjustable shock absorber would be a nice thing on a 1000 naked, but a compression stage on the rear damper would not have hidden the fact that it is somewhat insensitive to hard edges.

And if the front wheel becomes light on uphill sections, a steering damper would not have hurt either. But that would already summarize the critical points for the GSX-S. As a Suzuki representative, the new GSX-S 1000 completes the exciting segment of superbike-inspired bare country road milling machines. Maybe even more, because the GSX-S has a lot of power and very sporty handling with adequate electronics that do their job well without driving up the price with too many extras. The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 is available from dealers for 12,190 euros.

Well done Suzuki. It took a long time, but the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 is definitely not left behind as the new addition to the naked bike lineup. We are looking forward to the shoot-out in the big test with the competition and above all want to know how much more power it really has than the communicated 145 hp.
