Suzuki brings a new Hayabusa with Euro 5, less power, less torque and demands more money for it. After all, it is still 299 km / h fast.

Suzuki starts the year with a new edition of a legend: the third generation of the Hayabusa. The joy among the fans is great despite planned and unplanned advance videos. But the key data provide initial surprises: The new Hayabusa has a lot to do with the old Euro 3 Busa from 2015 and looks more like a comprehensive model upgrade with better emissions. It has obviously put down the model abbreviation GSX 1300 R. It’s just the Suzuki Hayabusa.

Euro 5 with less power

The sovereignty of the Hayabusa has been due to its huge four-cylinder since 2008. And it stays as it is in its key data: 1,340 cubic meters, classic 180 degree crank pin offset, 81 millimeter bore, 65 millimeter stroke, compression 12.5: 1. After Euro 5, it now gives 190 PS (minus 7 PS) at 9,700 tours (+ 200 / min) and 150 Nm (minus 5 Nm) at 7,000 revolutions (minus 200 / min). In times when Euro 5 engines are usually more powerful, sobering for speed freaks. But a look at the new torque curve shows where Suzuki worked. The new one shovels so much power onto the bike between 3,000 and 6,000 tours that the standard traction control seems justified and the two predecessors don’t stand a chance on paper. Incidentally, no other machine in this performance region.

Hayabusa engines at a glance

Hayabusa 1999 Hayabusa 2008 Hayabusa 2021
Displacement 1,298 cc 1,340 cc 1,340 cc
Bore x stroke 81 x 63 mm 81 x 65 mm 81 x 65 mm
compression 11.0: 1 12.5: 1 12.5: 1
High performance 129 kw / 175 hp at 9,800 rpm 145 kw / 197PS at 9,500 rpm 140 kw / 190 hp at 9,700 rpm
Torque 138 Nm at 7,000 rpm 155 Nm at 7,200 rpm 150 Nm at 7,000 rpm
0-200 meters 7.1 sec 6.9 sec 6.8 sec
0-100 km / h 3.3 sec 3.2 sec 3.2 sec
Top speed 299 km / h 299 km / h 299 km / h

This increase in power is clearly due to the extensive changes to the cylinder head and injection. The cylinder head has been redesigned, with new camshafts with less overlap, stronger valve springs for higher accelerations and more lift on the exhaust side. The four valves have been rearranged for better swirling of the mixture. Said mixture forms a larger airbox (plus 1.2 liters) and a new injection system with only a 43 millimeter throttle valve (minus 1 millimeter) per cylinder and 12 millimeters longer intake ducts. A new crankshaft supplies the bearings better with oil, lighter pistons (minus 26 grams) on new connecting rods (minus 3 grams) find their way into new cylinders. Despite the similarity to the old power plant, the Euro 5 engine can confidently be referred to as new. Basically the housing remains the same, only a few parts remain untouched internally. Of 1,000 parts, 550 are completely redesigned. Stronger bearings increase the durability of the gearbox.

Unimpressed by the underpower of seven horsepower, the new Hayabusa is still officially specified at 299 km / h. A nice, healthy, round table world, especially since this performance is bought at just 5.7 liters (minus 1.1 liters) per 100 kilometers. The 20 liter tank is enough for a range of well over 300 kilometers. Seen in this way, the Euro 5 Hayabusa is no worse than the old one. The first edition in 1999 also went over the unthrottled 300 km / h with 175 hp. Although only very few advertise at such speeds today.

More sound

Suzuki

The rear is slightly higher, the exhaust system is lighter. The new one handles a weight distribution of 50:50.

Suzuki attaches great importance to a strong sound with the new Hayabusa. The completely new, lighter exhaust system (minus 2 kilograms) with now two indifference pipes on the manifolds and three catalytic converters should emphasize the deep, strong tones, a newly designed Ram-Air system should support this. The optionally available titanium system from Akrapovic saves another four kilos and should also bring 2.5 hp.

More technology

In the form of the Motorcycle Stabilization Control from Bosch (MSC), the ESP for motorcycles, state-of-the-art technology comes into the new Hayabusa. This system is also used by KTM and Ducati, for example. Of course, the angle is based on the angle in the new TFT center display of the analog cockpit. Summarized under the SIRS (Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) you can now look forward to a partially integrated cornering ABS, six driving modes, three of which are freely configurable, a 10-way adjustable traction control, three mappings, a 2-way adjustable quickshifter with blipper, one 10-way adjustable wheelie control and a 3-way adjustable motor brake. All driving aids – except for the ABS – should also be completely deactivatable according to Suzuki. There is also a 3-way adjustable launch control that raises and maintains the starting speed to 4,000, 6,000 or 8,000 tours. The three selectable driving modes A, B and C allow the engine to respond differently, with the C mode also throttling the maximum output. Also on board: an active speed limiter, cruise control, adaptive brake lights, the well-known Easy-Start and Low RPM system from Suzuki, hill start and hill descent assistance.

Chassis only slightly changed

With the slight changes to the frame and chassis of the new Hayabusa, Suzuki was concerned with more stability with easier handling, better aerodynamics and wind protection, and more brake force transmission. Basically, the aluminum bridge frame remains untouched, only a new rear frame probably places the rear a little higher and is 700 grams lighter than the old one. This elevation probably also contributes to the new weight distribution of 50:50. The spring elements are the well-known fully adjustable from Kayaba, but they are newly tuned. The brake system is new with two Stylema calipers from Brembo on now 320 discs at the front (+ 10 millimeters). As standard tires on the new cast rims, the S22 hypersport tires from Bridgestone ensure grip. Unchanged in the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and in 190/50 ZR 17 at the rear. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in terms of its weight, ready to drive at 264 kilos.

Suzuki Hayabusa: 190 PS, 299 km-h top speed

Suzuki

Suzuki gives the new Hayabusa more technology in the form of a comprehensive electronics package based on the MSC from Bosch, which is also used by KTM and Ducati, for example.

New cockpit

Despite all the high-tech, the instrument of the new Hayabusa remains wonderfully analogue with large round instruments for speedometer and rev counter, as well as semicircular displays for tank content and water temperature. The on-board computer, menu, gear indicators and incline indicators are shown in the TFT display in the middle. The new handlebar stubs come 12 millimeters further towards the driver.

New design

The exterior of the new Hayabusa has been completely redesigned. The basic shape is still recognizable, but every corner has been revised, adapted and sharpened to make it pleasant. At the front, a new face with a new LED headlight ensures the first contact, which is flanked by new position lights with integrated indicators. However, the word daytime running lights is not mentioned. For this purpose, an extremely attractive LED combination unit is used at the new rear.

Colors and prices

Suzuki offers the new Hayabusa in three paint variants. Glass Sparkel Black / Candy Burnt Gold as an elegant variant in black and strong gold. Metallic Matte Sword Silver / Candy Daring Red as an aggressive combination of silver and gold and finally Pearl Brilliant White / Metallic Matte Stellar Blue as a classic white-blue variant in the spirit of old Suzuki greats. It can be expanded directly from the factory with 20 available accessories, including the Akrapovic mufflers, heated grips, pillion cover, milled hand levers and all sorts of small optical gadgets. Two tank bags with a capacity of nine or fifteen liters are also available, but only permitted up to 130 km / h. In Germany, the new Hayabusa costs 18,490 euros, which makes it 4,145 euros more expensive than a Hayabusa from 2015, but also 505 euros cheaper than a current supercharged H2 SX from Kawasaki with 200 hp. The new Hayabusa will be available at dealers from April.

Conclusion

Evolution instead of revolution: Suzuki’s Hayabusa has been extensively modeled rather than replaced by a successor. But after the Thunderbird went from Euro 3 to Euro 4, the Japanese vigorously revised the old four-cylinder. It is true that the performance drops and without a titanium exhaust, a new one is just as heavy as the old one. But there is more torque in the everyday relevant speed range. The price has risen sharply, at least with regard to the predecessor, but in relation to other strong tourers, the large displacement and the lavish technology package, it is just ok.
