The confusion about the “Bio-fuel” E10
E10? No refuel

Nobody wants to fill up with E10. If you look at what motorcycle manufacturers say about the alleged bio-petrol, you will see that this is no wonder. The chronicle of an information disaster.

The chaos: For fear of losing their engine, German drivers are refusing to refuel the Super E10, which has been available at petrol stations since February. The vehicle manufacturers approved around 90 percent of all car models in Germany for this purpose months ago. But almost nobody knows. Surprisingly quotes the “world” a BMW developer who warns that under certain conditions E10 can lead to increased water accumulation in engine oil. TV and newspapers respond gratefully. The headline that comes out is: E10 promotes engine wear. Hardly anyone notices the immediate BMW denial.

The petroleum industry wants to stop further introduction, speaks of “dramatically lower demand”. The word from “Buyers strike” makes the rounds, whereupon the politicians at the hastily convened “Petrol Summit” decides to stop the announced introduction stop – the confusion surrounding the introduction of the new fuel is complete and couldn’t be bigger.

It’s no wonder that motorcyclists are even more unsettled in the face of this chaos. Which fuel should you put in the tank of your machine, the new bio-gasoline, whose benefits for the environment are also highly controversial, or the Super Plus, which is between five and eight cents more expensive from now on, according to ADAC?

The facts: The motorcycle manufacturers make very different statements. Only BMW approves all of its two-wheelers of any model year for the E10. At least all Harley models are from 1980 onwards, Triumph and Yamaha from 1990 onwards, whereby Yamaha recommends that for carburettor models from a downtime of four weeks “the fuel system must be drained” should means: empty the carburetor, fill the tank to the brim. Honda restricts motorcycles from 1990 onwards only “Mostly” can be driven with E10 warns at the same time, “that bio-fuel can attack or damage painted surfaces on the tank and panels” and that also with released models “this fuel may cause the engine to run unevenly and lead to a reduction in performance” can. Kawasaki does not release any of its models before 2006, Suzuki no models before 1992 and between 1992 and 2002 only some, Suzuki only calls those from 2002 onwards. From Italy, Aprilia, Derbi, Gilera, Piaggio and Vespa are said to be all four-stroke engines from 2000 onwards harmless, but many Italian two-stroke engines are not suitable for the E10. Only one comes from Ducati and Moto Guzzi “we are still testing”.

The bottom line: Anyone who does not have express approval for their model from the dealer or manufacturer (most of them have more detailed, some very detailed information on the homepage) or is unsure should continue to fill up with E5 or Super Plus. Seen over the year, the price difference is 20 to 30 euros.

Damage limitation: Aral press spokesman Brandenburg considers the fear of E10 to be unfounded,

“Danger is low”

Interview with Detlef Brandenburg, press spokesman for Aral / BP

? Ever since the E10 has been available at petrol stations, E5 has cost as much as the expensive Super Plus. Why is that?

! Because it’s the same fuel. Wherever an Aral Super 95 E10 (with a maximum of ten percent bioethanol content) is offered, an existing type with a maximum of five percent by volume of ethanol and at least 95 octane is also offered at the same time – as stipulated by the legislator in the 10th Federal Emission Control Ordinance. Like most other providers, Aral decided to use Super Plus 98 as a protection grade for technical reasons. No legal problem: mineral oil companies are allowed to use the award “Super 95” also sell the higher-quality Super Plus fuel, as it exceeds the applicable requirements. Competition law dictates that since the two varieties are identical, they must also be sold at the same price.

? The bottom line is that the motorcycle population in Germany consists of significantly older vehicles compared to cars. A number of older models do not have E10 approval or the compatibility is unclear. What advice do you advise drivers of such models to refuel in the future??

! The safest approach in this case is the right one, which means Super with a maximum of five percent ethanol, Super Plus or our premium product Aral Ultimate 102. In view of the mostly low annual mileage, the surcharge for the fuel is bearable and justified for the engines of these two-wheelers to be able to operate for a long time without problems.

? What should you do if you accidentally put E10 into a motorcycle that is not approved for it??

! When the tank is full, remove half of it from the tank immediately using suitable tools and then fill it full with Super Plus.

? E10 is hydrophilic, which means that it draws water. What happens if the E10 lasts for a long time, e.g. B. remains in the tank over the months of winter break for motorcycles?

! It is important that the tank of the motorcycle is as full as possible before wintering. This minimizes the volume of air above the fuel and what is known as tank breathing. This means that only a small amount of air moisture can get into the fuel, which cannot lead to segregation or even corrosion. Little attention is paid to the advantage of hydrophilic fuel, but it is a guarantee for avoiding separate water phases that settle on the bottom of the tank and thus lead to corrosion. Rust can often be seen on the bottom of the tank, especially with old motorcycle tanks. With E10, the risk of corrosion is significantly reduced if, as described, the tank is full before wintering.

? How long can you safely park a motorcycle that has been refueled with E10 and approved for it, without the need to add additives?

! The usual winter break of several months is not a problem. Compared to the previous Super, the new E10 Super behaves significantly better. We advise against adding so-called additives, the quality and benefit of which are difficult to assess. Aral fuels already have sufficient additives, so additional additives are not required.

? The motorcycle manufacturers and the ADAC say that E10 can cause aluminum corrosion. Has the new fuel been examined or tested??

! Yes, in vehicles of the first generation of direct injection (does not exist in the motorcycle sector, Red.), It has been shown under particularly critical conditions with high pressure and high temperature that aluminum can cause corrosion on threaded screw connections – there is no passivation by atmospheric oxygen. Aluminum is oxidized in the presence of atmospheric oxygen and thus protected from further corrosion. This so-called passivation is shown by the gray tarnishing of the otherwise bare metal. Because of the relatively low temperatures and the lack of pressures, we estimate the risk that the carburettors used in the motorcycle sector could corrode as a result of the use of E10.

? According to vehicle manufacturers and ADAC, damage to lines and seals is also possible. Which materials do E10 not tolerate?

! Only the vehicle industry can answer this in detail, as a large number of sealing materials are used in vehicles. The tests we carried out with vehicles did not result in any adverse effects on elastomers, metals (with the exception of aluminum as described) and metal alloys (brass). Overall, we estimate the possible additional stress on materials due to the higher proportion of ethanol to be extremely low.
