Babylonian language confusion or a stringent system? What are the manufacturers’ model names based on??

The Swedish furniture giant Ikea has long since understood: proper names convey something personal, the customer is much more willing to build a relationship with the product. A bookshelf called the QTR V7Z could never have reached the level of awareness and popularity of the classic Billy. With machines, however, it may behave differently. Example: R2-D2, the nice little Star Wars robot, which, by the way, is not named after the two-stroke Yamaha.
And what about motorcycles, these emotionally charged machines? They are somewhere between Billy and R2-D2, have increasingly proper names, but usually cannot do without type abbreviations. Take the Honda Fireblade as an example. In 2003, when the 900 was still called, it was simply called Fireblade, in 2004 it was called CBR 1000 RR Fireblade. So that everyone can tell that something has happened to the cubic capacity of the fire blade. Not just there. This is how the fully bagged successor drives
the NTV 650 melodiously as Deauville through the country. The French seaside resort reveals far less about the motorcycle than the abbreviation NTV was able to do. NTV, the initiated knew straight away: aha, street motorcycle with four-stroke V2 and transverse crankshaft.
The connoisseur can find his way around Harley’s letter salad just as quickly, knowing immediately that the FXDWGI can only be a Dyna Wide Glide and the FXSTSI can only be a Springer Softail. You are not yet a connoisseur? continue reading.

Type designation ABC part 2: E – H

Enfield: The manufacturer does produce
Enfield India Ltd. in the Indian province of Madras also the seven hp diesel motorcycle Taurus (Latin: bull) continues, but the German Indian importer that
Zulpicher Motorrad-Technik GmbH, leads
officially only the antiquated model Bullet 500 in program. The name of the 70-year-old single stands euphemistically for bullet or bullet. The floor is available as a basic version without a surname. The addition DeLuxe / Silverstar refers to the chrome-plated tank and fender of the variant. The brand name Enfield is as well
like the model name Bullet historically
conditional. Because the company founders had
a contract with an armory in Enfield, located in the English county of Middlesex. While they were making gun parts for this company, they were fabricating
they also got their first motorcycle.
Harley-Davidson: No other manufacturer describes its models in addition to their proper names with columns of letters and numbers as sprawling as Harley-
Davidson: FLHRSI, FXDWGI, FLHTCUI … At first glance it just seems confusing. But it is not really. Then
the Americans adhere to a historically grown and series-related system. Numbers always stand for cubic capacity, with 1200 and 883 indicating the cubic capacity in cubic centimeters. 88 ?? like the twin cam engine ?? and 53 ?? as in the case of the Sportster Custom 53 ?? indicate the displacement in American terms, i.e. in cubic inches, converted 1449 and 883 cm3.
The 22 models, the 2004 Harley in five
Series, all have their own type designation, based on the abbreviation of the respective model series. According to this logic, XL always stands for a Sportster. In the past the XL came with
combined with other letters, such as CH for Competition hot or CR for Cafe Racer. Today, the range at Sportster is limited to
C and R variants, with C Custom and
R ?? different than in the combination CR ??
Roadster thinks. The XL 1200 C, for example, is a 1200 Sportster in
Custom execution.
Air-cooled big-twin engines have had the abbreviation F, and have done so for decades. The Twin Cam is in a touring chassis
with a 16-inch front wheel, the F is traditionally followed by an L. The combination FX is a contraction of XL and FL. they
This is due to the design, because the fork and front wheel of the FX models come from the Sportster (XL) and the frame, engine and rear wheel from the tourers (FL). If the FX is followed by a D, it is a Dyna Glide, but followed by an ST is a Softail. The Dyna Glide
(dynamic gliding) always has a telescopic fork, two vertical struts and a vibration-isolating engine suspension, whereas a Softail can also have a spring fork and always has a rigid engine suspension and two struts under the engine. Because the struts cannot be seen, the rear frame (tail) looks as if it were rigid (hard). But it’s not because it is sprung, so soft. The Softail models are in
touring-oriented FL and sportier ones
FX variants divided. FLST: Version with wide FL fork and 16-inch front wheel. FXST: Version with slim telescopic or spring fork and 21-inch front wheel.
The listed basic designations
are extended by several letters depending on the model specification. B: Bad Boy. C: Classic or Custom. Q: Fat Boy. G: Glide, WG: Wide Glide. H: Highway. I: Injection. R: Road King (King of the Highway). S: sport, jumper or special. T: Touring. U: Ultra. A FLHTCUI is therefore a tourer (FL)
in the highway touring variant (HT), ultra-classically styled (CU: Classic Ultra) with injection (I). Because, despite all the stringency, this could overwhelm someone under the braincap, this motorcycle can also run under the Electra Glide Ultra Classic. Strictly speaking, however, the Electra in Electra Glide has now lost its labeling function, because all current machines from Milwaukee have long since started at the push of a button. On the other hand, Deuce, which means the devil or the two in gambling, is not without significance. The Night Train can be translated as a night train because it is kept entirely in black, while the addition of Heritage on the Softail can be translated as heritage or cultural heritage. In the Dyna Low Rider, the name refers to the extremely low seat height of just 640 millimeters.
It comes completely out of the way
V-Rod (V from the engine layout, Rod from Hot Rod). Its type abbreviation VRSC is written out as V-Twin Racing Street Custom. According to Harley, it is a reminder of the origin of the engine, that of the factory racing machine
VR 1000 and which is now available to every buyer. The VRSC was offered as an A variant (alpha) until 2003, the VRSCB variant (beta) has been available since 2004.
Honda: The Japanese manufacturer now uses the model designation
much more proper names than before. The sporty all-rounder Hornet (hornet) is available as a 600 and 900. With the travel enduro Transalp it should go through the Alps excellently, with the Pan Euro-
pean across Europe. The Varadero takes its name from a seaside resort in Cuba, the Deauville from one in Normandy. On the Gold Wing you think you are on golden wings,
on the Blackbird you fly like a blackbird.
The Fire Storm should be as hot as
a firestorm, the fireblade as sharp as a fiery blade. After the black
Widow Black Widow from the program
was taken, the friend of the little cruiser has to come to terms with a shadow, the Shadow.
The most famous of the letter combinations used by Honda is CB, although it is hardly known what it initially meant: namely, city bike. In Japan, that was the name of small street motorcycles with four-stroke engines, such as the CB 50 and CB 100. This original one
The meaning of the abbreviation has become obsolete with the appearance of the CB 450. Today, CB means a street motorcycle with a four-stroke in-line engine, whether with two or four cylinders. The Honda abbreviations derived from this are semantically and in alphabetical logic not always completely understandable.
This is how successor generations of the CB come
first with the addition X, then with an appended R or F. It stayed with it
the X is not reserved for the in-line six-cylinder as it was initially, but now generally refers to a new generation, a technical innovation within the existing series. The R points on the one hand
the successor models of the CBX series, but also symbolizes the sporty orientation of these types. In the name that was added last
With regard to the four-cylinder of the CBF 600, CBF could indeed stand for four, but this interpretation is out of the question, because the name of the 500 has since this year-
Two-cylinder also CBF. The Ver-
It seems likely that CBF describes models with an in-line four-stroke engine that are designed for beginners.
In Honda’s nomenclature, the V stands for a V-engine. Four-cylinders receive the addition F (four, four), two-cylinder the addition T (two, two). As with the in-line engines, the R in front of the cubic capacity also indicates the sporty tendency of the machines with V-engines. In contrast to the CX 500 (slurry pump), the X in the VTX 1300 and 1800 no longer indicates a V2 with a lengthways
Crankshaft, but also the technically innovative moment of the motorcycle.
The letters positioned after the cubic capacity specifications have the following meanings. S: Sport, R: Racing, RR: even more racing, F: four-cylinder engine or street sports,
SP: Sport Production (SP-2, second development stage), X: Comparative, XX: Superlative.
Husqvarna: Most of the models in their range are sold by the Italian Swedes for competitive sports. The brand, whose name translates as Muhlenhaus, only has two machines in its repertoire for public road traffic. The SM 610 S can be broken down as follows: SM stands for Supermoto, the postposed S for Street. TE 610 E hides the following meaning: T equals Thumper (huge thing, large-volume single cylinder), E equals Enduro or, to put it another way, electric starter.
Hyosung: The Korean supplier completely dispenses with lettering in its three models. He calls the two uncovered street machines self-explanatory naked, and he named the 250cc chopper Aquila. The term is borrowed from astronomy, where the constellation of the eagle in the equatorial zone is titled as Aquila.
