Triumph Scrambler 1200 in the driving report
For street and terrain
We were allowed to drive the new Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC and Scrambler 1200 XE. You can read why our tester is so enthusiastic here in the driving report.
I.Basically there were several surprises at the presentation of the new 1200 scrambler models from Triumph on December 16 and 17 in Portugal. While some other manufacturers simply put a scrambler dress on their street bikes and push the trendyly styled machines into the showroom, people in Hinkley sat down and took the matter really seriously: Compared to the manufacturer’s existing 1200 retro bikes, 30 percent of the Changed drive and 80 percent of the chassis – the aim of the British was to bring a vehicle onto the market that cuts a good figure both off-road and on the road. They succeeded.
Test drives on mud in continuous rain
The first test drives took place in Portugal under completely desolate conditions on mud in continuous rain. Both machines, the roadworthy version Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC (stands for Cross Country) and the Scrambler 1200 XE (Cross Extreme), shone with good driveability even under adverse conditions. Above all, the newly developed traction control is an absolute novelty in the off-road mode; even inexperienced pilots use it to climb scree runs or muddy passages.
But the Scrambler sisters also remain relatively easy to drive off-road despite their weight of around 225 kg with a full tank. Specific changes such as longer suspension travel, longer wheelbase, cornering ABS and lean angle-optimized traction control are groundbreaking for the XE version. While the XE offroad cuts a better figure than its XC sister, it sets better accents on asphalt due to a tighter suspension setup.

The price is a surprise
During the first few kilometers of road under the southern sun, the newly configured engine stood out well. In direct comparison to the Bonneville T120 or even the Triumph Thruxton, the Scrambler-Twin has lost three kilos of weight and has gained in maneuverability. The twin hangs very well on the gas and only vibrates moderately. The 90 HP provided are more than sufficient in the field. You don’t miss anything on the country road either. At most on the highway, because the Triumph Scrambler 1200 is electronically cordoned off at 177 km / h. The set-up of the 1200 scrambler twin turned out to be sporty, the engine loves revs. Anyone looking for something to stroll around should look elsewhere.
Ultimately, the price is also a little surprise: 13,550 euros call the British for the XC version, 14,550 euros for the XE. Those familiar with the scene had expected more. All the details about the machines, as well as the answer to the question of which version is better for whom and why the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE is basically the better deal, can be found in the detailed driving report in MOTORRAD issue 2/2019.
