The Triumph Street Triple R
The sheer madness
What makes a motorcycle a hit? A coherent overall concept. And what makes a motorcycle a successful model later on? Meticulous finishing touches. Triumph has worked on every corner of the Street Triple to refine a top-class again.
S.imon Warburton opens the seat lock in search of the missing luggage hook. “Here they should be! Where are you? They were in the specification sheet, for sure! ”The top Triumph product planner is genuinely amazed at this little faux pas. But also professional enough to turn around in a flash. “Look, the license plate holder! The three screws are out in no time. Then the Street Triple is ready for the racetrack! “

Practically everything is different. Do you notice that? Not right away, because Street Triple Street Triple has remained in its foundations, and that’s a good thing. Very well, because there are only a few motorcycles in this world that welcome their rider with extended handlebars in such a friendly manner. A few meters in the cornering paradise of southern Spain are enough, and there it is again, the insight: This combination of a wonderfully pushing, whistling triple and a fast, stable and responsive chassis is almost unbeatable on the country road, and for good reasons.
The most important one can be found when looking at the power and torque curves of the almost unchanged engine: A torque plateau from 4000 / min to 7500 / min, a second, higher, up to almost 11000 / min – with this characteristic you are always well served, quite no matter in which gear. The triple pushes reliably, hangs on the gas spontaneously and predictably at any time, and just puts you in a good mood. And it is mercilessly effective, because more than 106 hp can hardly be implemented anyway.

Old cockpit, but new functions: The Street Triple now has a fuel gauge and an optional tire pressure monitoring system.
The only change on the drive side: a longer first gear, which opens up an additional option, especially in switchbacks.
Which is why reason number two comes into play: This character-building engine hangs in a chassis that has increased again. The weight savings alone: Triumph indicates 183 kilograms with a full tank (predecessor 190 kilograms) and is thus on a record course, because even the petite MV Agusta Brutale 675 is two kilograms heavier. Just for comparison: The Japanese competition weighs an incredible 20 to 40 kilograms more.

But the lively handling, to which the super-sporty and easy-to-grip Pirelli Rosso Corsa tires contribute, is only one side of the new Street Triple chassis chapter. On the other hand, there is still a relaxed neutrality that inspires experts and gives beginners (also available as 34, 48 and 98 hp versions for an extra charge) a secure feeling, because the coordination of the Kayaba suspension elements also for the 2013 model year was another convincing success. The Street Triple R rushes through the breathtaking curve landscape of the Spanish hinterland, full and with fine feedback, leaving no doubts as to what is going on between the asphalt and tires, neither when braking on the long radii nor on the way to the next straight. It remains to be seen whether this harmony will continue to exist when the Street Triple R meets German beet fields.

Something slows down here, but doesn’t regulate anything: The famous Nissin stoppers initially have to do without ABS.
On the other hand, it is absolutely clear that the well-known Nissin brake system also meets the highest standards. The four-piston radial pliers bite into the 310-millimeter pliers powerfully and finely dosed, leaving no complaints even among very brisk contemporaries. Except perhaps that the presentation machines do not yet have the optional ABS (from January, plus 1.5 kilograms of weight), which there is no way around in this class either. It will cost 400 euros extra, which raises the price of the R to 9490 euros (standard triple 8490 euros) and makes it, including ancillary costs (370 euros), scratch the 10,000 euros limit. But for that you also get a real country road gem. Now with a fine, new touch!
