To a very good friendship

What she doesn’t like: wild cross-country rides and racetracks. What she’s good at: everything else that you would like to do with a motorcycle. The slightly overweight Honda Varadero turns into a very attractive companion as a used car.

There are motorbikes that whole volumes have been written about. With other models, finding solid information about
the peculiarities of the machine in question than more difficult. One of those is the Varadero, which after six years of construction has gathered a loyal following. Because it is a great touring machine, many drivers of this Honda with a 1000 V2 engine have already accumulated a lot of kilometers and a lot of experience at the same time.
Those interested are advised to get in touch with one of these experts. But where to find
one such Varadero friends? For example in the Allgau. They go there once a year for the so-called Kasspatzen rally (www.kaesspatzenrallye.de). In Bal-
which swung, up on the Riedberg-
pass, umpteen drivers exchanged ideas about their models. MOTORRAD was there and asked about tips on the Varadero and how to make the right machine for the desired purpose with cleverly selected accessories.

Me: An engineer somewhere in Japan designed exactly the right motorcycle for me. I then just bought the Honda without a test drive. Last year stood for me
the decision to buy the facelifted SD02. In contrast to my beefy SD01, the new Varadero is just too slim for me. That’s why I came to the decision during the winter break: I’d rather renovate it than buy a new one. Preferably
I like the now first-class chassis with the adjustment wheel for the shock absorber hidden behind the front fairing.

Model overview – Honda Varadero 1000

Model history
It was said that there would soon be a worthy successor to the Honda Africa Twin: an XL 1000 V with the powerful V2 engine of the sportsman VTR 1000, allegedly even with a G-Kat. That was in mid-1998. Drawings in the press made the new one appear sleek and wild. Some already saw themselves in their imaginations
storm the highest dune ridges in the Sahara. It turned out differently. When the biggest Honda Enduro to date appeared at the end of 1998, many stud riders winced. In the sales room there was a heap of a motorcycle with cast wheels that were atypical for an off-road machine, a bench as wide as a couch and a much too good plastic dress. With this chubby around the world, through thick and thin? Never! The Africa Twin remained the ideal partner for adventure, while the 1000 series, named after the Cuban seaside resort “Varadero”, was intended to serve as a vehicle for more leisurely trips to the Alps, Pyrenees or the North Cape.

As a long-distance tourer, the two-cylinder won despite its petrol consumption, which was criticized everywhere
Immediately friends who are confident on dirt roads and gravel-
could do without deposits. More comfortable than any all-inclusive hotel in the Caribbean, the Honda pampers its guests during a kilometer-long day with enormous seating comfort and good wind protection. Sporty drivers were comfortable, too-
at least as far as the chassis was concerned, a little too much of a good thing. Compared to the former class leader among the off-road big ships, the BMW R 1100 GS, the spring elements were too soft and made for a spongy feeling when cornering-
whet. The shock absorber was improved in 2001 and there was also an immobilizer. In 2002, Honda baptized the motorcycle internally from SD01 to SD02
around and had it manufactured in Spain. Still in the same-

a heavily revised version in Munich.
The consumption-optimized SD02 built in 2003 came with injection, G-Kat, a sleeker one
Fairing as well as tighter spring elements and now with six instead of five-speed gearbox.

The Honda promptly won the big travel enduro comparison test (MOTORRAD 6/2003) against the previously dominant rival BMW R 1150 GS. Since 2004 the Varadero has been offered with the optional composite brake system CBS including ABS. Nevertheless, in the most recent comparison (MOTORRAD 8/2004) it was narrowly defeated by the new BMW R 1200 GS. But whatever? Varadero fans want a Varadero, not an Africa Twin and also not a BMW.

Market situation
With the appearance of the BMW R 1200 GS it is
the competitive pressure on the Honda even stronger
increased and demand decreased. To the
To stimulate sales, dealers are now, in 2004, offering new vehicles at favorable financing conditions-
nen to what in turn the prices for used-
machines pushes. In any case, various reports-
den dealers throughout Germany. In addition, many Varadero owners switched to the injection model with G-Kat in 2003 and gave up theirs
Carburetor machine in payment. These used vehicles were brought to the market again
for Varadero seems saturated.

Interested parties have good prerequisites for negotiating if they want the currently not particularly popular enduro thick ship. Models around 5000 euros are still in demand. That
The supply of such vehicles from the first years of construction 1999 and 2000 with mileages over 30,000 kilometers is extremely sparse, however. According to information from North German dealers, such motorcycles are found among Scandinavians and Greeks-
sales, in whose home the Varadero is much more popular than in this country. Correspondingly specialized buying agents from these countries gra-
send the best deals. Most of the machines are sold through dealers, while the private market plays a subordinate role. Apparently, buyers want to play it safe with the dealer who is obliged to guarantee. Tip: If you are looking for a demonstration machine or one-day registration, visit the Honda homepage (www.honda.de)
some interesting advertisements from around 8000 euros.

Nevertheless, it is worth researching the advertising sections of the daily newspapers and advertising papers-
because there is little stress to fear from a regularly serviced Varadero, and private prices are well below the retailer announcements. For around 6,000 euros you can find a 2001 model with 15,000 to 20,000 kilometers in the advertisements. If you add a few hundred more, you may be able to get hold of a well-maintained carburetor model from the last year of construction in 2002 with around 10,000 kilometers on the clock. There will be no Kat and ABS, but who would rather have chubby curves than sleek edges on the engine-
bike, also with the old Varadero gets a loyal, mostly underrated companion at a really low price.

sightseeing
The search for specific errors is difficult with the Varadero? hardly any exist. Some models of the first series suffered from a faulty timing chain guide, but Honda has long since fixed this problem on the corresponding vehicles. During the inspection, you don’t need to look for defects, apart from falling damage, but rather for improvements. In the case of the SD01 built in 1999 and 2000, these are primarily chassis optimization-
