Easily recognizable in profile: the higher seat, the imitation start number plate and the “winglets” on the engine housing.

A little plastic here, a little elastic there

With the currently sold out MT-09, Yamaha has hardly had a real hit in the model range after a long dry spell than the Japanese add: A little plastic here, a little elastic there, the standard MT-09 has already mutated into a street rally.

The elastic is limited to the Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally on the bench. At 849.5 millimeters (Yamaha apparently takes it very carefully on this point), the seating furniture is exactly 34.5 millimeters higher than the standard version. According to Yamaha, the sitting posture should go in the direction of supermoto. You actually sit more actively than on the standard MT, but by no means more uncomfortable. At most, those with short legs are more likely to stumble.

A little plastic here, a little elastic there

Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally. While both the imitation start number plates and the coverings of the tank, engine protection and fork are met with general goodwill, opinions differ on the rather inconspicuous handlebar cover, with approval from the younger generation being higher than the older ones. Which perhaps has to do with the fact that the board-like, flat plastic structure reminds with a little imagination of the characters from the “Transformers” film series, which are constantly taking on new shapes.

Winding through is difficult with the Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally

Regardless of the look, the wing mechanism, which ends in two hand protectors, has two sides: a positive one, because rain and cold are reasonably successfully kept away from the hands, and a negative one. At 942 millimeters, the overall width of the Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally is a hefty 127 millimeters larger than the normal MT-09. Which in city traffic often prevents meandering to pole position.

Technically, however, the Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally is identical to the base. Which is basically not a mistake, after all, the famous three-cylinder is a source of joy in front of the gentleman: powerful, easy to turn, cultivated and economical. Only the load change reactions and the very rough throttle response, especially in A mode, cloud the picture a little.

What both variants have in common is the slightly inharmonious steering behavior, which requires constant pressure on the inside of the handlebars in order to stay in line. No wonder, both roll on the same series rubbers: Bridgestone S20 “M”. Nevertheless, with the MT-09, Yamaha has succeeded in creating a famous bike. However, whether the customer is ready to transform a proud 1400 euros extra charge into a handful of plastic parts for the Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally remains to be seen.
