Content of
With the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, the fourth version of the MT-09 entered the ring in just over a year. But the youngest offshoot differs significantly from the other playmates.
Exciting times: until a few years ago, the different types of motorcycles were clearly demarcated from each other, but the individual segments are now becoming increasingly blurred and sometimes form a variety of things that are difficult to differentiate. Hybrid forms such as travel enduros or sports tourers have been around for a long time. And invented the TDM 850 all-purpose weapon Yamaha 1991 the genre of crossover bikes. But only recently has this genre experienced a real revival.

Yamaha MT-09 Tracer with height-adjustable seat
Oops, the new bench takes the pilot to lofty heights. In the upper position of the two-way adjustable bench, it towers 860 millimeters above the floor – perfect for an overview. In the lower position there are more moderate 845 mm, which also fits perfectly. Smaller contemporaries order the padded part and sit at 815 mm exactly on the level of the standard MT-09. Contrary to what the upholstery looks very firm at first, the two-part seat of the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer offers great comfort even on long forays. In order to offer more seating space, Yamaha lengthened the rear frame and made it more stable.
The Japanese also took care of the wind protection. They gave the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer a sporty half-shell including a windshield for the lawn when traveling. Although the windshield protects the upper body very well, it also directs the incoming air directly to the helmet. Even at a moderate speed, none of the three positions offer convincing protection against wind noise or air turbulence. A real annoyance that spoils long stages for the tracer driver. At least the accessories industry should be happy about it.
Tilts slightly nervously into deeper slopes
The standard case holders are also new to the touring athlete. If necessary, the inconspicuous carriers can hold stable softbags (subject to a surcharge). Passenger grab handles, hand protectors, a larger tank (18 liters), a horizontally adjustable, higher and wider handlebar, the cockpit from the Super Tenere, a main stand, an on-board socket as well as radiator and side panels complete the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. According to the factory, the goodies increase his weight by a total of 19 kilos. With a full tank, the MT-09 Tracer weighs 212 kilos – still a top figure for a crossover bike. Weak on the other hand: Due to the gross vehicle weight of 390 kilograms, the Tracer only allows 178 kilograms of payload.
Nevertheless, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer feels completely different than the basic MT-09: more mass, significantly higher center of gravity, different seating position. When bending down, the touring athlete initially demands something tasty, but then tumbles nervously into lower inclines. Possibly a peculiarity of the Dunlop D 222 specially developed for the Tracer in the special specification “L”. At least the skin, unlike the somewhat indifferent series rubbers (Bridgestone S 20 “M”) of the nude, provides crisp feedback. Once on course, the MT-09 Tracer also pulls its course in a stable and targeted manner. Yamaha has not yet been able to say whether the Dunlops will also be approved for the naked bike.
Very tightly coordinated spring elements
On the other hand, we can already report that the Japanese tuned the spring elements very tightly. Stronger springs at the front and rear, plus more damping: this is where the chassis technicians really hit it. Possibly a little too much, because the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer has hardly any negative spring deflection even at the lowest position of the spring preload at the rear – an unmistakable sign of a very hard spring.
In addition, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer tramples insensitively over rough asphalt distortions despite the softened damping of the shock absorber, which is now adjustable in the rebound stage. But the set-up has one good thing: Even in attack mode, there is very little movement in the load on flat stretches. For this purpose, the fork and shock absorber have enough reserves when fully loaded.
On the engine side, Yamaha only changed the mapping. However, the treble looks a little less lively after this treatment, even in the hottest mode “A”. “For the tracer we designed the electronic control of the throttle valve to be a little more conservative,” confirms a technician. It’s a shame, from a sporting point of view that means a small step backwards. After all, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer offers traction control as standard. Wheelie fans deactivate them before their favorite activity, otherwise the likewise conservative and somewhat coarse regulating TC prevents any upward urge on the front wheel. So exciting times? Yes, and the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is definitely a part of that.
