The Yamaha Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT have been extensively modernized for the 2021 model year. Like the MT-09, they get the three-cylinder engine with increased displacement and power as well as the new lightweight frame. MOTORBIKE drove the two tracers in the Siena area.

At the time of the driving presentation, in the morning coolness of Tuscany, there is a difference between the Yamaha Tracer 9 and the more extensively equipped Tracer 9 GT are equally special: The Tracer GT pampers the drivers with heated grips ex works, the heat of which can be regulated in ten levels. Another difference: on a country road riddled with bumps, the semi-active damping setting of the Yamaha Tracer GT in mode 2 brings a comfort advantage over the standard model, although its spring elements are also quite responsive.

Although the semi-active damping of the Tracer GT, according to Yamaha, exceeds the adjustment range of the conventional spring elements, both upwards and downwards, the standard Tracer 9 appears tighter overall and offers a slightly better feel for the front wheel, which suits a sporty driving style. This is by no means intended to give the impression that the Tracer 9 is an uncomfortable motorcycle or the GT a crumple motorcycle – the differences between the two are noticeable, but not great, and are put into perspective on better roads. Incidentally, changing the spring preload, i.e. adapting it to different load conditions, also has to be done by hand on the Yamaha Tracer GT.

Unlike the semi-active damping and cornering lights of the Yamaha Tracer GT, the heated grips, the very well-functioning shift assistant with blipper function and the case system can be retrofitted to the standard Tracer at an additional cost. If you upgrade the standard model with suitcases, heated grips and quickshifter, you can most likely order the GT right away. That is why it has so far led the sales statistics with a 75 percent share.

The Yamaha Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT have been extensively modernized for the 2021 model year.

The MT-09 and the Tracer are equipped with the same frame, which is lighter than the previous models and the motor is integrated in a position rotated five degrees further back. The tracer swingarm is similar to that of the MT-09, but is a whopping 60 millimeters longer, so the wheelbase remains the same as before. In addition, high risers and a raised handlebar ensure an upright sitting position. Both the seat height and the footrest and handlebar position can be adjusted within limits; During the test drives, however, there was no need to change anything in the standard setting. For drivers who are around 175 centimeters tall, the seat that has been raised to 825 millimeters is most likely to be of interest.

119 HP power and 93 Nm torque

Both specimens turned out to be well-balanced motorcycles with pleasing steering characteristics. Directed with a good overview on the wide handlebars, they could be swung nimbly through tricky combinations of curves without showing stability problems in faster arcs.

Strict uniformity in the engine: With a three-millimeter larger bore, the Yamaha developers have brought the tried-and-tested three-cylinder to 890 cm³, while at the same time the power increased to 119 hp and the torque to 93 Nm, which are earlier than the peak value of the previous engine. As a nice bonus, the new one was 1.7 kilograms lighter. These details match the driving experience – the triplet already gets down to business in the lower middle of the speed range and pleases with its flawless running smoothness. This applies to the engines of both tracer examples that were driven. Around 7,000 rpm it gets a bit edgy, but remains bearable.

Overall, the three-cylinder with the usual 120 degree crank pin offset shows very nice touring characteristics, especially since the harsh response behavior of earlier engines has been eliminated. Even in mode 1, the sharpest of the four available driving modes, load changes are smoother than before. In modes two and three, the throttle response is even smoother at full power, while the fourth mode also cuts off peak power.

Swiss colleague does the pillion test

The exhaust system also contributes to the touring suitability of the Yamaha Tracer and Tracer GT by dispensing with a side silencer. The exhaust gases are blown out of the large collector at an angle to the left and right below. This means that there is space for equally large, symmetrically designed suitcases on both sides. At the same time, the passenger footrests can be mounted relatively low, which gives the passengers a pleasantly wide knee angle. And as the icing on the cake, the pillion seat on the Yamaha Tracer and GT is generously dimensioned. A Swiss colleague, 1.80 meters tall, asked me to take a ride and was then thrilled with the comfort and freedom of movement.

As an avowed skeptic about high windshields, I can also praise the tracers on this point, albeit a cautious one. Air eddies behind the tenfold height-adjustable window were kept within tolerable limits, the view of the driving line was not impaired

Display instruments that are difficult to read

The two display instruments, on the other hand, deserve clear criticism. They reflect heavily and are difficult to read, especially if the driver is wearing a light-colored jacket, as I did in this case. This is all the more noticeable as the instruments provide a wide range of information. One would like to take in one or the other piece of information more, but on sunny days only the bare essentials are recognizable.

Conclusion

The motor, which is now 1.7 kilos lighter, gets down to business very early and pleases with its flawless running smoothness. Both specimens turned out to be well-balanced motorcycles with pleasing steering characteristics. The Tracer GT is equipped with semi-active damping, cornering lights, heated grips, shift assistant with blipper function and a more extensive case system. Semi-active damping and cornering lights cannot be retrofitted to the standard tracer.
