But the technically demanding mountain route claims victims. Several tragic accidents cast a shadow over the event, but this one race in July 1946 remains.

No accidents, despite pouring rain

Well, 67 years later, a couple of active motorsport enthusiasts are reviving the Ruhestein race. And this time the event is under a better star. No accidents, it’s raining cats and dogs. Not unusual for the Black Forest in September, but uncomfortable for the 37 starters who are preparing to ride the route at the correct average speed on two or three wheels.

Motorcycles up to 1975 are allowed, a great opportunity for the two MOTORRAD Classic people Peter-Paul Pietsch and Michael Pfeiffer to compete with a total of ten cylinders. Four and Sei add up to ten, divided between a beautiful Honda CB 750 and a Benelli 750. Almost all other motorcycles are older, up to the manual NSU team from 1923. The rules are simple: an average of 46 km / h should be achieved, two special stages be driven through exactly on target time.

Difficult without a watch, but where to put it? Division manager Pietsch knows what to do, editor-in-chief Pfeiffer trusts his gut instinct. Teams have an advantage: the boatswain keeps the watch, the other steers.

Who overtakes is out!

Event organizer and Black Forest original Walter Mohrle warns: If you overtake you are out, unless the man in front has a problem and gives hand signals. One takes a certain severity from him without further ado and prefers to start.

The audience, which has already enjoyed numerous extraordinary automobiles including piloting celebrities such as Prince Leopold of Bavaria, holds out bravely and also listens to the slowly overheating motorcycle engines.

Peter-Paul Pietsch on the podium

All kinds of curves, bitumen strips, a little leaves in the corners, you have to be careful. All 37 starters arrive safely at the Ruhestein. The convoy heads back to the village to the applause of the fans. Mohrle organizes the award ceremony together with the head of the Baiersbronn tourist office, and everyone receives a certificate.

Pfeiffer’s stomach was again too fast – only 15th place on the podium Peter-Paul Pietsch. Only three hundredths separated him from victory. Markus Weigmann got it on his DKW RT 125, frenetically celebrated by the audience. Carriage driver Martin Scheibe completed the podium. Afterwards there was a lot of celebration with racing sausage and music.
