Benelli 1130 TRE-K 2008

Menus

The hypermotard concept gives ideas. And nothing better than a somewhat marginal machine to make a difference. With its big 3 cylinders of 1130 cm3, Benelli was already making noise with his TnT. You might as well get this mill and propel a big supermoto with… Or invent a hybrid model similar to Yamaha’s 900 TDM.

With its long travel suspensions, its large fork crown, its saddle with a certain size and its raised driving position and its large boiler, the new TRE-K should not lack punch and pleasure, while ensuring more comfort than the TnT. The latter offers its technical base and its moulbif to the TRE-K, with a little less power to promote torque and mid-range sensations. Which perfectly matches his strange alien gaze and surprising name. A new follower of trek-king…?

Trial

Benelli 1130 TRE-KOn the hills of Belvedere (Italy – Adriatic coast), a pack of Trek 1130 walks the winding roads in a light rhythm. A mock break after the hectic 10 minutes it takes to get out of town. I take this opportunity to take stock of this surprising motorcycle.

Like so many others, on this “Io amo Benelli” day, I got to know the manufacturer’s new bike up close. Less intimidating than the TnT, exuding a slightly wild and voracious elegance, the Tre-K is a beautiful machine, which one takes pleasure in observing from near and far. The well-crafted tank is a really nice piece, as is the tubular frame and swingarm. What if we went for a walk !?!
810 mm – this is the saddle height listed on the data sheet. However, the seat seems higher. Nothing too bad and we left with 5 Tre-K to discover the surroundings of Misano Adriatico. The 205 kg dry are quickly forgotten, to make way for a manoeuvrable and playful machine. A few cables later, I wonder if I will not bring back the Benelli in several pieces. 2 reasons for this:

– The assembly of parts of the bike must have been left to guys with nervous problems. The tank seems stuck on a large mass of rubber, the side plastics like the bubble vibrate in all directions (you wonder at each acceleration if they will not take the powder), and what to say of the flap reached epileptic seizures…. It holds, but it does not look very serious on a machine over 12,000 euros. Ah, Italian haute couture and its subtleties.

– Another reason, the engine. I’ve never seen anything like this on a trail, same sport. The 3 cylinder is not only filled to the brim, even at low revs; but above all, it is impressive the ardor that inhabits him. What a potato! And what character! Nervous at will, one would almost have to be careful with every gas stroke so as not to fly over the road; especially in this country where everyone adapts the rules of conduct to their personal taste. Even moderated compared to the TnT, the 3-cylinder combines a sacred power with a very lively behavior, carried away by a sound that takes the guts. As the boiler lifts your heart, the mechanics speak with rage. It’s growling, it’s alive, it’s snarling, it takes you to the guts…. It’s a delight ! On the other hand, it is better to temper the ardor of the Tre-K with the original tires. The Dunlop D270s, with a mixed road / path profile and sculptures, are likely to offer you some crossings in the Italian virolos. Halfway through, a few light slips from the rear tempered my enthusiasm. Do you want to treat yourself? Immediately transfer the original tires and fit a good sports compound. The 125 horsepower of the beast will only be more enjoyable to use. As on the TnT Sport, there is a small button on the instrument panel allowing you to choose between 2 injection maps: large potato or very large potato. I could see a slight difference between the 2 modes but nothing really meaningful. And then, is it really important; the engine is already filling your quiche.Benelli 1130 TRE-K

The injection is still a bit of a review. We were treated to a few jerks on the go-around. Not really painful but sometimes annoying.

A few stops here and there allowed me to see the subtlety of the practical side of Italian women. The search for a break-even point is a case of intense stress. It takes a really fine touch of the foot…. and hold the clutch closed patiently. Catching the side crutch risks causing a divorce with the left foot. The pot under the saddle is top class and aggressive; but to put something in the saddle, let it go. As for the retro, a real joke. Ah, those bits of triangle are pretty, but what is it that you don’t see much in them?.

After a few photos, we return like bombs to the Santa Monica circuit where the 1130 Tornado test awaits me. We open correctly, and the Tre-K asks only that. Even in the city, where it is better to be reasonable, the distiller is impatient and belches his right hand in agitation. When calm is required, the machine flexes to a relaxed pace if need be – but reluctantly; the engine wants, demands to express itself. The braking does not lack power to stop it all, with a certain lack of progressiveness. It would take a little more on a machine of this type. The rear brake is also strong, so much so that the wheel is blocked quite quickly; no problem, the bike remains controllable while a pretty comma of gum scratches the asphalt.

A crazy trail sport? Almost. The tone of the 3 cylinders and its captivating noise, it makes you want to fill up with sensations. For the ride, forget it – Although Benelli has provided a height-adjustable screen, suspensions relatively firm for a trail but ensuring a certain flexibility and filtering well the small asperities, a driving position straight and “versatile” tires, the Tre-K does not at all have the profile of a roadster like the Yamaha TDM or the Honda Varadero – Moreover, the firmness of the saddle does not mean that you have to make long trips. It would be more intended for those wanting the enchantment of TnT mechanics with a little more comfort than on the roadster. You just have to be wary of the original tires, because you get caught up in the game quickly. And this engine, this crazy thing…. what a success !
