Yamaha wants to set the pace
fbn Streetfighter with brutal charm: Yamaha MT 01
fbn Naked bike with semi-naked girl: Yamaha MT 01 at the presentation
Five years ago, Yamaha presented a spectacular dream at the Tokyo Motor Show. Chance of realization: Nearly zero. But now it's actually coming – the MT-01.
The production version of the high-capacity street sweeper was on display for the first time in Munich – a prototype becomes reality. In part, that's certainly due to the huge response the 1700s have had over the last five years.
Voluminous: Displacement and sound
And it really has something to do with resonance and sound: the rough, rustic sound of the MT-01 is supposed to be reminiscent of the electrifying sound of the mighty Japanese Kodo drums. The 1670cc air-cooled OHV engine – the largest V-twin Yamaha has ever built – is based on the tried-and-tested V-twin powerplant from the very successful US-market Road Star Warrior. For the newly developed MT-01, however, it has been significantly revised.
Hearty: The torque
One of the most important development goals of the engineers was a substantial torque, especially in the lower to medium speed range. The maximum of 150 newton meters is already at 3750 rpm. This promises tremendous sprint power, because the engine also delivers 90 hp at a moderate 4750 rpm. So you will be able to quickly shift through to fifth gear – and then thunder along comfortably. Because at 100 km/h the engine turns just 2300 revs.
But it can also be a little faster – at least the multi-adjustable chassis and the brakes should fully meet sporting demands. The engineers didn't do things by halves when it came to the design either. The power plant of the V-engine with the raised mufflers and the striking lines make the MT-01 a real eye-catcher. Five years after the debut, the road now awaits the big Yamaha drum.
