Biker test: Evelyne

I got married with a biker at the age
40 years old. Wishing to share the passion of my companion, I pass
my motorcycle license at the age of 42. Permit
in our pocket for 4 days, we are going to Auvergne, him in Kawasaki
Z100J, me in YAMAHA 1000 TR1. It is with this motorcycle that I have it
accompanied in 1986 to tour Turkey (12,500 km in 5
weeks). I replaced this motorcycle in 1987 with a YAMAHA
XJ900 with which I toured Greece. I have
sold this motorcycle in 1990 following a minor fall.
But, I scared myself and felt that he
was safer to stop the bike.
Stayed in the mood because of the Moto-Club and my
profession of head of an insurance office where
I had a large biker clientele, I plunged back
in 1999.

Triumph legend 900the
September 29, 1999, at the age of 56 ½,
I bought a brand new TRIUMPH Legend 900, color
red, black engine.

I added the following Triumph options to it:

  • a fork head more for aesthetics than
    protection
  • the central stand
  • the chrome-plated grab handle for easy handling
the stop, because I never carry a passenger
  • the covers for the protection of the fork spy seals
  • the tank bag

I find it very beautiful, and classy with its chrome sign
on the tank. My friends say she looks good on me
equipment in the colors of the motorcycle.

Why Triumph ?

On the one hand, it’s a somewhat original motorcycle that we
do not see on every street corner, on the other hand we like
well the Triumph brand which reminds us of our youth, and finally, we
love the local dealer who is a friend.

Contact

Triumph legend 900The
riding position is perfect for my 1.63 m. Saddle height
is only 72 cm and I have both feet flat
on the ground. This is the first motorcycle on which I ride
feel comfortable. The riding position with the large handlebars
is straight and very natural, the legs are square.
This bike is very easy to handle and I really feel
in trust. I have tried other motorcycles badly, but
they were either too high or too chopper typed
with the feet forward.Triumph legend 900

This motorcycle has sold very little, probably due to ignorance,
because it is ideal for a small woman. A friend has it
tried and she soon bought the same.

Protection, what protection? There are not any !
It does not prevent me from doing great tourism and 800/900
terminals during the day by small roads do not scare me.
Very coupleuse and very flexible with its short box,
we wind everything on the 5th and last gear: relaxed and restful.

Start-up

There is never a problem, it starts at a third of a turn (well
yes, for a three-cylinder!)

In the city

It’s motorcycle is great: very light from the front,
very manoeuvrable, upright position, feet firmly on the ground. She is fair
limited by a somewhat large turning radius.

On national or departmental roads

It’s a treat, the queen of small winding roads.

On the highway

Go your way, not adapted with its large handlebars, its absence
protection and its short box. That said, given the repression
current, if you do not exceed 120/130 cruising speed,
can be OK. The faster you will feather and paralyze
arms and cervicals.

Duo

I never do, but again, we can say: not really
adapted.

road

It is excellent for the use I make of it. Those who
say that she sails a little in the big curves between 183
and 187 km / h did not understand the philosophy of the motorcycle.

Braking

Okay, just enough in cool use. A double disc at the front
would not be luxury.

Consumption: there I am smiling again: 4.7 liters on average
on small roads (I have even gone down to
4.2 liters), 5 liters stack on the highway at 120 / .130 cruising.
The tank, which only contains 15 liters, is therefore not
too annoying, because it still allows you to do 300 km before
running out of gas.

Oil consumption: zero – I never top-up
between two oil changes (every 5000 km)
Drains and filters changed by my partner. I use exclusively
purchased 100% synthetic Mobil 5/40 car oil
in supermarket.

Maintenance

Triumph legend 900Revision
every 5000 km at the brand’s dealership

Tires: Original Bridgestone BT56 changed to 8500
km. Good tires, but wear out very quickly
Replaced by AVON sport-touring which are still perfectly
operational at 21,000 km. As good as the Bidgestone
and last twice as long.

Other parts replaced:

  • chain kit: had a big hard point and went from tense to
5 cm arrow depending on whether the rear wheel was turned.
Changed at 20,000 km on my return from Spain
  • fork spy seals at 5000 km (taken under warranty)
  • fork spy seals at 10,000 km (taken under warranty)
  • fork spy seals at 15000 km (I paid,
but it was back 1000 km later)
  • complete fork spontaneously changed by the
dealer under warranty at 20,000 km when the motorcycle had
    almost 4 years

Triumph legend 900Baggage

There is nothing planned. I ride with a tank bag
and a backpack (not annoying given the very driving position
right) or a tank bag and waterproof bag fitted
on the back of the saddle and attached to the turn signals
(rigid), grab handle and footrests.

Conclusion

Triumph legend 900This is
a very good motorbike for mountain walks and on small
roads. We already have our footing while driving at legal speeds,
which is not trivial in these times of great repression.

The lack of protection does not prevent me from using
this motorcycle for touring in the company of real
GT (BMW, Honda Pan, Gold Wing, Kawa GTR, etc …). I still have
followed and I have some references:

  • Auvergne in 2001 (10 days)
  • the Pyrenees in 2002 (3 weeks)
  • tour of Spain and Portugal in 2003 (3 weeks), while
I had already celebrated my 60th birthday.
Strong points Weak points
  • engine couple
  • maneuverability
  • ideal for small sizes
  • braking
  • lack of protection
