The Brivido is easily forgiven for its hard chassis, because, as is usual with Italian bikes, the DB9 also shines with technical features.

The finest ingredients and technical delicacies

Bimota has always been the same since the company was founded in 1973: Take a powerful engine, tune it according to your own ideas and put it in a self-developed, sporty chassis. More than 50 different models of this type have already left the factory on the Adriatic. With a few exceptions, the naming of the bikes is always the same: The first letter stands for the engine manufacturer, the second – always a “B” – for Bimota and the number behind it for the number of models that were produced with the respective engine supplier. Accordingly, the Bimota DB9 with the exotic nickname Brivido (shower, thrill) is the ninth Bimota with a Ducati engine. By the way: Since the revival in 2005 after the bankruptcy in 2000, Bimotas have only been wearing hearts from Bologna.

Rimini-Bike runs like the devil

That is currently changing, because with the BB3, a hot superbike powered by the BMW S 1000 RR is about to be completed. But even the Bimota DB9 Brivido, launched in 2012, is anything but underpowered with the fine engine of the Ducati Diavel. With a measured 151 hp, the Rimini bike runs like the devil and shoots its pilot on cloud nine. However, the unit only takes full throttle from 4000 rpm, and the Bimota DB9 Brivido S sometimes whips the chain violently below this mark. In addition, it accelerates quite abruptly, which requires a sensitive hand on the throttle when accelerating out of slow corners. But then the twin spoils you with a fabulous running culture and elasticity that is second to none. The bottom line is that the V2 is a great good mood country road engine with breathtaking qualities between 4500 and 8500 rpm.

The finest materials, attractive design and technical delicacies are typical of a Bimota.

Typical for Bimota: Outstanding properties often go hand in hand with technical inadequacies. On the test motorcycle, this affects, among other things, the speedometer, which displayed long fantasy values and thus forced the driver to estimate the speed pi times a thumb. After a few hours, the display suddenly worked properly again. Other blunders: The brake pedal of the Bimota DB9 Brivido S got stuck, which caused the rear stopper to overheat and the Brivido driver to fail the next time it was anchored. In addition, the blind screw for a lambda probe in the manifold said goodbye early on.

Such moments make it clear that the small series manufacturer will probably never reach the maturity of the machines of a large corporation. On the other hand, Bimotas almost always enchant with their special driving characteristics, as the chassis of the Bimota DB9 Brivido S impressively demonstrates: The Italian, with a full tank of only 197 kilos, turns wonderfully manageable, very neutral and extremely precise into the bends and rushes through them extremely stable. In a comparison in 2012 on the Nordschleife (PS 6/2012) there was a lot of unrest in the DB9 framework, but this was most likely due to the ultra-fast passages combined with the sometimes rough bumps on this unique route.

Bimota DB9 Brivido shines with technical features

Here and now, the Bimota DB9 Brivido S is calmly pulling its course, even in attack mode. But there is also a bit of shadow on the chassis side when there is a lot of light: The rather stiff spring elements neutralize bad bumps in particular only moderately.

But the hard chassis is easy to forgive, because as usual with Italian bikes, the Bimota DB9 Brivido S also shines with technical features. With her, the shock absorber is not supported on the frame as usual, but on the extended upper arm of the beautiful tubular steel swing arm. In addition, the suspension houses an eccentric for adjusting the swing arm angle, which can be adjusted with a few simple steps. Multiple settings ultimately led to the realization that the movement position represents an ideal compromise between handiness and stability.

The huge single brake disc with internal caliper is also a real eye-catcher. However, this exclusive feature is only reserved for the S variant and has its price: the Bimotista has to pay a surcharge of just under 1100 euros compared to the standard variant; All in all, the Bimota DB9 Brivido S costs around 30,000 euros. Such prices are also a reason why a Bimota will never be on every street corner. Which makes the machines even more attractive for many.

PS

The measured values of the Bimota DB Brivido.

A nominal 162 hp, the drive from the Ducati Diavel only activates 151 horses. That is eleven less than promised, but the performance is sufficient even for sporty country road glow with the Bimota DB9 Brivido. Especially since the drive delivers its power wonderfully evenly and in an excellent metered manner. The same applies to the torque, the curve is exemplary. Above 4000 rpm, the V2 always sends over 100 Nm to the transmission, the peak value is 120 Nm. However, the engine only assumes full throttle from this mark onwards, and when given the appropriate command, it tends to choke itself. The bottom line is that the Twin is a pure good mood engine.

PS judgment

The Bimota DB9 Brivido S is a typical Bimota: very shapely and equipped with the finest ingredients and technical delicacies. However, the high price and a degree of maturity that does not always reach the highest level of perfection are also typical. Bikes from Rimini are always illusions too – but very desirable.
