This F 800 GS tends towards a more “all-road” profile than its siblings. It leaves to the 1200 the care of taking care of the big rollers, and to the 650 the more urban side.. She, she thinks more about having fun on the slopes, her profile doesn’t deceive anyway: all-terrain tires on spoked rims associated with good ground clearance … It gives you ideas for a ride between the stones, without doing so in the approach of trekking.
Its name informs us that this GS is part of the family of recent F 800 S and ST. Admittedly, the trail takes again the twin of 85 horses of the aforementioned road, but the modifications are numerous and not insignificant. The parallel twin has straightened a lot to move from the road to the crossing.
From 30 ° of inclination, the cylinders are raised up to 8.3 °. To achieve this, BM completely revised the lower half of the crankcase. New fasteners, new reinforcements, a clutch cover and a modified clutch shaft as well as a water pump and adapted hose connections have saved a kilo on the engine..
The camshafts of the GS are slightly different from those of the S / ST, favoring an arrival of the power more in adequacy with the philosophy of a trail. Torque is planned – 90% of the maximum torque (about 8.3 mkg) is available between 4000 and 7500 rpm – but without being reluctant to go up in the towers.
As this is a model of the F family, maybe you expected to find the perimeter aluminum frame of the S and ST …. Lost. The frame of the 800 GS is a new trellis frame made of tubular steel, with a very elaborate steering column – it allows the handlebars to be turned by 42 °.
The fork tubes are not afraid to go on an adventure: inverted 45 mm in diameter with 230 mm of travel. In terms of the rear suspension, the classic aluminum swing arm cast in shells (yes, the single-arm is not invited) is associated with a central combined articulated directly on it with a shock absorber slaved to the travel and a travel of 215 millimeters. . Braking is not overbearing as it is the fashion at the moment. Simple and efficient with 300 mm floating discs clamped by floating 2-piston calipers. On request, a 2-channel ABS can be installed. It is disengageable if you want to venture into the gravel and dust.
With its funny double optics, the F 800 GS has its own look, inspired by that of the 1200 but cubic in its expression. Behind, we find the instrument cluster of the F 800 series – Full of information (me finally, go through the options box to have the gear indicator and the chrono …), but without really sex- appeal. Before arriving there, get on the saddle which rises to 880 mm in height … In case, BM also offers a model at 850 mm.
After the new Transalp 700, the 650 Versys and the XTZ 660 Tenere, it seems that we are witnessing a revival of the trail.
