BMW F 800 GS 2013

The trail has been defined along three axes in recent years: city dweller, like the F 700 GS; GT, such as the R 1200 GS; and rustic, like this F 800 GS, of which here is the first evolution. Appeared in 2008, this ‘green and asphalt’ motorcycle was immediately praised for its ability to get through the gravel and to spin the banana to the budding rider (literally). At a time when a certain Triumph 800 Tiger XC comes to tickle the shelves, a little touch of fittings and a serious dose of electronic assistance come to enrich Bavaria’s mid-size trail..

Careful, BMW has only finely touched up the 800 GS. Just a breath of a scalpel to refine the shoulders of the trail. They are much more feline, more elegant, just like the ‘duckbill’ which has frankly lost in thickness. Smoked flashing cabochons, new clutch and brake jars, redesigned dials, the transplant of the new BMW commodos, the display of the fuel level and engine temperature finally in series – here are the main cosmetic changes.

The engine did not know any change. This 798 cc parallel twin-cylinder still delivers its 85 horsepower with enthusiasm. He does however benefit from a new option: the possibility of being restricted to 48 horses, for the new European license. Frame, chassis and brake are renewed, with the exception of the inverted fork, whose diameter goes from 45 to 43 mm.
This is not where the F 800 GS ‘II’ stands out the most; it is at the level of safety and prevention.
It starts with a little delicacy of the seat. Many riders of measured height wanted a lower seat height. They can now ask Behème to lower it 60mm.
Then it’s up to electronics to take over. The 800, like the 700 for that matter, has ABS as standard. Dual-channel model, it can be disconnected when driving engaged in off-road conditions.
Since the time that the German brand has been testing numerous innovations, they are no longer reserved for the high-end. This F 800 GS can now be equipped (optional) with ASC traction control and ESA controlled suspension. Here you are with two co-pilots of choice: the first regulates the traction of the rear wheel; the second is responsible for adjusting your suspensions according to the chosen mode (Comfort – Normal – Sport).

With its second generation of F 800 GS, BMW has retained most of its trail while adding the panoply of the electronic adventurer. Fully equipped, the bike promises to take care of almost everything, leaving you the choice of more or less passable roads. The list of options grew even longer, soon longer than a political speech.
