Tout keeping its ‘mid-range’ positioning, the F850GS pulls out its passport and kicks in on the Allan Quatermain asleep in us.
Arrived in the fall of 2017 to replace the eponymous 800, the F 850 GS awaited its ‘Adventure’ version like any good self-respecting Bavarian adventurer.. Little sister of the R 1250 GS from which she stole her backpacker’s guide and her desire for elsewhere, the F 850 GS is taking the powder with the arrival in the catalog of this derivative ‘Adventure’.
While maintaining its ‘mid-range’ positioning, this F850GS Adventure took out its passport and made foot in the Allan Quatermain asleep in us.
Differentiated fairing more protective and more masculine (as the Bavarian firm would like to point out), higher screen, wider and adjustable in two positions, hand guards and crankcase protector. This makes it possible to immediately differentiate this upgraded version of the mid-size trail while promising better protection against the elements. When we detail more carefully, we also note that the ergonomics have been slightly optimized with footrests that widen Enduro style and a brake pedal and a speed selector which are adjustable here. A longer luggage rack made of stainless steel also differentiates this “Adventur’iere”, which is more suitable for accommodating zulupack and down with a large bungee cord. Thus appeared, the F850 GS Adventure and its passenger, linked by a double reinforced handlebars raised by 15 mm, will be able to try to push the horizon with more ambition … and less stiffness..
But what would a true adventurer be without a propensity to swallow the kilometers as one swallows up her budget at the local station … In this game, the Adventure progresses enormously and sees its tank go from 15 to 23 liters which allows it to travel a minimum of 550 kilometers. Or Paris-Dusseldorf without stopping at the pump. Or Johannesburg-Durban for the most exotic among us !
Of course, wrapped in its equipment, this F 850 GS is overweight and climbs to 244kg fully loaded, 15kg more than the standard version.
But back to the heart of the machine, housed in a new tubular steel trellis frame (the old one was made of aluminum) more rigid and more robust. Compared to the F800GS Adventure to which it succeeds, this 850 has a completely revised engine ready for multiple occasions. BMW has taken a serious look at its parallel twin to offer more. With more space in the cylinders, it will be able to set the tone. The displacement rises to 853 cm3, ie 55 more. Power reaches 95 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and torque of 9.4 mkg at 6,250 rpm. That’s 10 hp and almost 1 mkg more than on the previous F 800 GS Adventure. All the modifications result in a reversal of space for certain peripherals. Thus, the secondary transmission chain passes to the left and the muffler migrates to the right. BM had done the same type of operation when its 1200 GS adopted the liquid-cooled boxer. Why ? Because with a pot to the right of the grindstone, you avoid burning yourself when you maneuver the grindstone on the left side; side we use the most.
Like the F 850 GS, the Adventure is fueled with electronics, as standard or as an option. Let’s start with the original equipment, which includes two Riding Modes (Rain and Road), ASC (Automatic Stability Control) traction control, ABS, and a revamped dashboard. But as we are at BMW, a passage through the appetizers box can quickly tempt you. It is thus possible to equip the F 850 GS Adventure with ESA electronically adjustable suspension, DTC traction control, a shifter, Pro Riding Modes – which adds Enduro, Enduro Pro and Dynamic -, Active cornering ABS Pro, signature LED headlight, Dynamic brake light, emergency call, Keyless Ride keyless start system, and the all new TFT dashboard in full color. 6.5 inches. This high-tech screen offers a much more modern display and allows you to manage music, phone and machine vital parameters. As usual, BMW offers different packs to access different options depending on the intended uses (Comfort, Touring, Dynamic)
The F 850 GS Adventure is offered in an exclusive gray (Icegrey) colorway and two Rally and Exclusive style variants.
This machine will of course be bridle in A2, which is an asset for the one who will be the springboard for a beginner aiming to run for the queen 1250GS when his experience (and his portfolio) will have been expanded. But come to think of it, in its adventurous version, this mid-range trail will ultimately have almost nothing to envy of its superstar sister, if not the famous cardan final transmission.
