Trail is a key category, ultra-strategic at BMW. With its R 1200 GS, the manufacturer has secured a cheeky supremacy. Other models allow everyone to find their own trekking mount. But the Bavarian brand is eyeing other lands, other conquests, other airspace. And for emerging countries, with enormous potential, engine capacity and price must be of an adjusted caliber. This is how Behème has enriched its range with a G 310 R roadster, which serves as the basis for this trail of unprecedented displacement: the G 310 GS. An expressive motorcycle of adventures like its big sisters, but much closer to the economic reality of the borders of Asia.
What joy is mimicry. This mini GS faithfully reproduces the personality of the maxi. Marked angles, profile of adventurer, play of style and seat highly suspended. But the appearance ends there. The 310 GS looks like you could lift it with one hand; the R 1200 seems like a juggernaut designed to break down a wall. Of course a 300 is slimmer, lighter, less seasoned in the throes of displacement. However, it does not demerit. Simply, his belly does not overflow, because similarly motorized as the roadster.
It is a modest engine, but honoring the history of trail running. This kind of motorcycles is illustrated with monos, its typical engine. This is the case with the G 310 GS, provided with a single piston agitating in 313 cm3. All the technical solutions are classic, with liquid cooling, injection, 4 valves, double ACT and a 6-speed gearbox. However, this mono is distinguished by its inverted cylinder head, the admission being found towards the front. This configuration has the advantage of moving the center of gravity downwards, and closer to the front wheel. This provides more responsiveness to the G series machines.
What will we have under our elbow to carry the 169.5 kilos of this 310 GS? A respectable 34 horsepower, which the engine develops at 9500 rpm. The torque is consistent with the displacement, peaking at 3 mkg at 7,500 rpm. A power in the guns of the category, allowing daily use, overflowing on a few weekend adventures. Perfectly suited to the needs of the countries concerned or the A2 permit, but necessarily limited for the desires and needs of travelers from the old continent. Most wouldn’t need more … But desire does. As for the maximum speed, do not ask for more than a good 140 km / h.
As we have seen, the GS is built on the basis of the 310 R. But how did she manage to gain 11 kilos? A more protective fork crown, a specific trim, a luggage rack with integrated handles, it weighs.
The trail takes the engine, and most of the cycle part of the roadster. We therefore find the tubular steel trellis frame, just retouched at the level of the steering column; the column angle is less open and the headroom is larger. In the same concern for stability, the swingarm has been lengthened by 46mm, bringing the wheelbase to 1,420mm. The copy and paste is also exerted on the shock absorber and the inverted fork. However, to stick to trail use, the suspension travel has been increased. Plus 49 mm for the fork, i.e. 180 mm of sliding, and an additional 40 mm at the rear, harmonizing the stroke over 180 mm as well. This will allow the G 310 GS to overcome some roughness, but at the cost of a penalty for the seat: the saddle height goes from 785 mm to 835 mm. 5 cm difference for a saddle, you can feel it. Anyway, a trail is high up.
And it has a big wheel. The front axle receives a 19-inch rim, a compromise between the road (17 ‘) and the offroad (21’). BM keeps a 17 ‘at the back, taking care to change the shoes for more versatile rubber. Too bad the spoked wheels are not part of the game, not even optional.
No change regarding the brakes. The ABS supervises the crew, consisting of a 300mm front disc with a 4-piston radial caliper signed Bybre (Brembo sub-brand), and another rear disc, 240 mm this time with a double piston caliper.
In addition to the significantly different seat height, the G 310 GS emphasizes its driving position. A trail is one of the most contracted vehicles for riding. Sitting in a dominant situation, we are ready to venture out everywhere. The small windshield and shoulders will break the force of the air much better than the roadster. But it will remain limited, far from the benefits of a big GS.
Once mounted, the pilot will feel more protected by the presence of the cover. The view of the cockpit will be identical to that of the 310 R. A window where everything is digital, from the speed at the bargraph, from the fuel gauge to the gear indicator engaged, and trips, fuel calculations, clock, etc..
The controls on the handlebars are the same … except for this little button above the turn signals. Why is there marked ABS? Because the latter is disconnectable. A plus when you venture into the paths, where braking sometimes requires human appreciation and deviations, which electronics cannot understand.
If the smallest of the BMW trails proudly wears the blue and white emblem, it is because it was designed in Germany and is unhesitatingly inspired by the GS family in its most beautiful aspects. Under the propeller, the motorcycle finds its origins in Indian factories. Like the roadster, it is manufactured by TVS Motor Compagny in Bangalore. Suddenly, impossible to claim the Made In Germany label. The good deal … KTM has its small Duke manufactured by Bajaj, Harley its 500 and 750 Street in India as well. In any case, to conquer this market and offer a tight price, economist logic requires it..
The price. It will be important for this G 310 GS, and will largely condition its establishment on the territory. Despite the proliferation of models in this range of displacement, the sauce is still difficult to take. However, there will be plenty to have fun on the trails. The small yard now presenting this BMW, the Suzuki 250 V-Strom, the Honda CRF 250 L and the Kawasaki Versys-X 300. We could also talk about the Mash 400 Adventure and the Benelli251 TRK. In short, things are moving, and all that needs to be done is to entertain our streets. The smallest of the GS will also entertain you paths, hazelnuts, urban roads, undergrowth and innuendo ?!?
