With the 130 hp K 1200 RS, BMW is committed to sporting ambitions. Small downer: a weight of 286 kilograms costs a lot of strength.

For BMW fans, the world has been upside down since October 1, 1996. On the occasion of the IFMA in Cologne, the motorcycle builders from Munich openly acknowledged their performance. The new K With the Telelever front suspension from the Boxer series, 1200 RS not only showcased the best in terms of chassis technology that the white-blue brand has to offer, but its builders also tickled 130 hp out of the lying four-cylinder to the delight of their sporty customers. Truly a small sensation when you consider that Bayern stuck to the 100 hp limit for so long over the past decade until the assumption that they just couldn’t make it anymore. The 30 percent jump in performance is not only due to the increased displacement compared to the old K 1100 RS – a five millimeter longer stroke now enables 1171 instead of 1092 cm³. Shorter intake manifolds in front of the injection system and a modified map of the engine electronics also provide the power boost, which ends at a speed of 8750 rpm. A 98 hp variant – here the four-cylinder only revs up to 7000 rpm – is also offered by BMW. In Germany and France even exclusively, but not so much for insurance reasons, but because the introduction of an EU operating permit with a uniform upper limit for horsepower is still a long way off. As long as nothing has been decided here, the Bavarians want to stick to the existing gentlemen’s agreement, even if the Japanese have long been arguing for what it takes. So first of all, the K 1200 RS customer has to find an enterprising BMW dealer who has the horsepower Parts from abroad, for example from England, are obtained, installed, and individual acceptance is made possible. BMW Munich does not provide any assistance here, which is a shame, because the new K has plenty of power when it is open: more than 100 Nm from 3500 rpm, and at the top at 5500 rpm even 118 Nm promise rich torque values. A song of praise is due to the increased compression, the changed timing and the airbox volume increased by seven liters. And like all modern high-performance engines, this four-cylinder cannot avoid dynamic pressure charging, forced ventilation via the fairing front à la Kawasaki, Honda or Yamaha. The running smoothness, responsiveness and maneuverability of the large-volume four-cylinder engine are also said to have improved a lot: valves with a smaller stem diameter save weight, lighter pistons and piston pins reduce the masses to be accelerated. Like the sports tourer itself, the Motronic of the K 1200 RS also works the third generation. With quite practical side effects, because thanks to the automatic cold start system and electronically controlled throttle valve actuator, the mandatory choke lever is no longer necessary. Another benefit of the new Motronic MA 2.4: Connected to a mobile diagnostic computer, errors in the on-board electrical system should be exposed in no time. The K 1200 RS is also the first BMW four-cylinder to feature a newly developed six-speed gearbox. A revised automatic gearshift should improve shifting comfort and shifting precision. And because the parallel swing arm no longer rotates in the gearbox but in the frame, gear changes should be quieter in future. Unlike the new boxer, the K 1200 RS has a “real” frame again. Instead of storing both the Telelever front suspension and the parallel swing arm in the engine, a cast aluminum frame takes on the load-bearing role. Only in this way was it possible to completely detach the engine from the chassis using solid rubber elements, without negatively affecting driving stability, while the new 3.5-inch and five-inch-wide cast light alloy wheels with five stylish double spokes, a 120/70 at the front and one at the rear, boasted With 170/60 wide tires, BMW relies on the tried and tested when choosing the braking system and uses K 1100 RS parts both front and rear, including second-generation ABS. Like the ABS, the two (!) Regulated catalytic converters will also be part of the standard equipment of the 27,400 marks, 286 kg heavy K 1200 RS. The fact that the sports tourer, unlike some important competitors, had to put on weight again, clouds the anticipation. Even if the extended ergonomics package delivers everything it promises in terms of driver posture. The handlebars are adjustable in height and lengthways in three ways, the one-piece bench seat can be adjusted over three centimeters in height, and even the footrest system can be varied horizontally by 30 millimeters and vertically by 26 millimeters. It seems almost natural, even if the windshield is locked in two positions. Newly designed handlebar fittings with ergonomically better placed horn button and integrated switch for the hazard warning lights as well as the hydraulic clutch actuation and the automatic turn signal deactivation round off the efforts for the driver’s well-being.
