On the occasion of the 2015 Wheels & Waves festival, BMW Motorrad unveiled its interpretation of a Scrambler to the world public: the BMW Concept Path 22.
Cooperation with Southsiders MC, Ornamental Conifer and Dyer Brand.
The BMW Concept Path 22 is the result of a cooperation that goes far beyond just motorcycles. At the initiative of the organizers of Wheels & Waves, of the motorcycle club “Southsiders MC”, with above all its member Vincent Prat, BMW Motorrad invited the artist “Ornamental Conifer” and the surfboard manufacturer “Dyer Brand” to join forces with the manufacturer to give shape to the BMW Concept Path 22.
Motorcycles – the expression of freedom.
“The BMW Concept Path 22 stands for freedom – freedom of thought, and the expression of that thought. What pleases is allowed, like at the Wheels & Waves festival. The Concept Path 22 is based on the BMW R nineT which is for us the very embodiment of a custom motorcycle. We will and will have to modify and customize it as we see fit. That is why the idea of a Scrambler is not new to us. And we have thought the time had come to present our take on this legendary motorcycle concept, ”says Ola Stenegard, Motorcycle Design Manager at BMW Motorrad. Typical of BMW, a powerful flat-twin and cardan shaft drive are at the center of the BMW Concept Path 22. The single-sided swingarm opens up the view of the five-spoke rear wheel, as is customary at BMW. The rest of the bike is just as naked. The classic round headlight, the fuel tank and a short saddle give the bike sober proportions, a sign of agility. Optically speaking, the trim ends above the hub of the rear wheel and thus promises playful handling. The typical features of a Scrambler, such as the studded tires, the larger front wheel, the somewhat increased deflections as well as a high exhaust allow the bike to evolve easily on gravel or in the sand. At the same time, these elements are the pledge of a striking appearance which announces at first glance the kind of adventures that the BMW Concept Path 22 will allow to experience..
Handlebar pleasure in its primitive form.
The BWM Concept Path 22 reveals maximum minimalism. Every shape, every surface has a function. However, every detail is the expression of both great aesthetics and mastery of craftsmanship. In addition to the rustic elements such as the bellows on the front fork or the protective grille of the headlight, high-end details such as the topstitched leather saddle, the handles also wrapped in leather or the stainless steel exhaust tips in the the typical Akrapovi Scrambler style? add exclusive touches. High-performance components from Ohlins and Gilles Tooling, refined technical solutions from MotoGadget, such as the indicators integrated into the ends of the handlebars and the instrument cluster, as well as the contrast-colored milled parts from Roland Sands Design underline the quality of the high standard in every detail. The milled aluminum wheels in contrasting color are unique pieces produced exclusively by BMW Motorrad which complete the minimalist look with a prestigious touch. All the pieces in this study are the essential essence while offering the best possible quality. The BMW Concept Path 22 thus perfects the art of reduction and returns to the primitive origin of the motorcycle: the union between man and machine..
Riding the Waves – boards by Dyer Brand.
The surfboard rack on the right side of the BMW Concept Path 22 will not go unnoticed. Specially developed by BMW Motorrad, it too is reduced to the essentials, as functional and refined as the motorcycle. Made only of aluminum profiles and leather, it is highly modular and adapts to boards of different dimensions. When not needed, it folds into the silhouette of the bike or dismantles in a jiffy. As for the boards to which it is adapted, it is Mason Dyer himself, the brilliant shaper of Dyer Brand in San Diego, who makes them. He is renowned for his high quality custom boards inspired by the 1950s and 1960s. Exclusively for the BMW Concept Path 22, he has created two custom boards: a longboard (9’4), reminiscent of the time when the Scrambler was born. and a shortboard (6’8) meeting the requirements of modern surfers.
Expression of a joy of living.
The first Scramblers of the 1950s were modified road cars, suitable for off-road exits with reinforced studded tires, increased travel and high exhaust. The result was a distinctive look that became the expression of a state of mind. “Nothing pairs better with Wheels & Waves than a Scrambler. A Scrambler is the epitome of the bike that escapes established standards and conventions. Road performance doesn’t matter, what matters is style and ride. originality. The Scrambler is synonymous with passion and it has as many facets as its owners. The Concept Path 22 is our take on the R nineT. The latter is an ideal base to be transformed into a Scrambler “, says Edgar Heinrich, designer in head of BMW Motorrad.
