BMW R 100 CS 1983

Too good to not be true: This BMW R 100 CS from 1983 actually only ran 4,813 kilometers! A great eye-catcher in the unrestored original condition, which not only impressed us with its timeless, classic elegance in the spotlight of the studio.
It was in the early summer of 1983 that I mustered up all my courage to test drive a BMW at the BMW branch in Stuttgart R. 100 CS to be agreed. It goes without saying that, as an 18-year-old schoolboy, I was neither among the typical clientele for the Bavarian top model, nor did I own the 11,590 marks for it. The sales professional behind the dark stained counter didn’t let me feel that, but instead pushed the key into my hand with a knowing grin and the words "half an hour!".

Red metallic with the color code 566
This test drive is still fondly remembered today. Not because on my first ride on such a Bayern boxer I had to struggle with the idiosyncrasies that were unknown to me at the time and that let me swing through the curves in the typical greenhorn manner.

Metallic red and the golden stripes give the R 100 CS a timeless elegance.
But because of this one left bend, in which the far wedge rear of an oncoming, red Ford Consul Coupe forced me into the absolute limit area of the road construction measures, which the practically new BMW R 100 CS and I, despite delineators and lots of gravel, with a lot of luck unscathed escaped. It goes without saying that I immediately had the threatening image of this cross-oncoming Ford in mind when I discovered our photo model in an Internet advertisement. After all, “my” demonstrator at the time was exactly such a BMW R 100 CS in red metallic with the color code 566. And of course I was fascinated by the fact that 35 years after my unforgettable ride, the sports boxer on offer should hardly have more kilometers on the clock than the former test vehicle.
Could it really be?
After just a few minutes on the phone, it was clear that we had to put this two-valve boxer, which had been built 4,038 times, but in such an unrestored original condition, into the studio. The provider had bought the BMW R 100 CS, the original letter of which only shows one previous owner after the daily registration to the dealer in May 1983, in 2006 with around 4,500 kilometers on the clock. “From a touch of nostalgia,” as he admits. Because between 1984 and 1990 he had already traveled over 100,000 kilometers across Europe with just such a CS in red metallic. With this copy, however, it was not even the 300 that he completed twelve years ago on a weekend with the transfer license plate.

He then drained all the liquids, preserved the inside of the tank with Ballistol and stored the machine properly – along with a few other bikes, including two BMW R 100 CS, which were also perfectly preserved. Six years later he took the machine in a van to BMW Senger in Russelsheim, where all the oils, the brake hoses and the tires were replaced. In addition, the steering damper from the original BMW accessories was installed – now the 1000 series should finally be driven.
Photo model in excellent condition
But that didn’t happen, which is why the owner now, after another six years, advertised the BMW. And thereby gave us the opportunity to photograph this red beauty in all its splendor. In fact, it is always fascinating to see the attraction that Muth‘sche lines still unfold, which have a special aesthetic due to their strict symmetry. Some colleagues made the pilgrimage to the studio again to admire the excellent condition of the BMW R 100 CS. One of them then rushed to the phone to express his emotion. Which meant that the person called was there an hour later – and gave the BMW owner a promise to buy after a short period of reflection! Maybe just as well. Because then I no longer had to worry about a possible test drive. I still have fond memories of what can happen.
