A big long-haul cruiser, that’s how we could describe the R 1200 CL. This “peculiar” style BM is eyeing the other side of the Atlantic to encroach on Harley’s hunting ground. In fact, this CL is reminiscent of an Electra Glide simmered with Munich sauce; A machine designed for long walks on tarred billiards. With its huge fork crown and large mirrors, the protection on board is royal. The tortured-shaped bubble is as effective as you want, the hollow in its center is a plus for vision and it allows the visor to be raised without unwanted swirls. Low and comfortable, the comfort of the saddle is emphasized, for the rider as for the passenger. They will not even be inconvenienced by the suspension which is housed in the same boat. It is clear: on the chapter of the life on board, the CL wants to be imperial, rival of the K 1200 LT and the Goldwing. Where it gets spoiled is in dynamics. In the states, we love big tires. No problem: BM grafted a huge 150 wide sausage at the front. It throws! But hello the lack of rigor. OK, the driving of the CL is nothing like that of a supersport, but we can get excited about this lack of agility. The turning radius? No, frankly, you better not talk about it. Harley owners will not look at these kinds of faults if they feel interested in the machine. Where they risk complaining, it is with the 1200 boxer of the CL.
Although it shows the flexibility and smoothness typical of Bavarian productions, its 61 horses seem very thin to tow a machine of more than 300 kgs. The Milwaukee Twin Cam is much more expressive and generous. BM should review its copy for this mill, especially as the particularly effective braking could easily slow the driver’s mood swings. Apart from this lack of breath, the R 1200 CL can boast of a comfort above the rest, a finish that would make the Harley pass for a livestock trailer, handling and equipment much better than the transatlantic rival. With us, the R 1200 CL will certainly be of less interest than the K 1200 LT. On the other hand, it is a serious rival to H-D in America, where we like twin and big cruisers..
