BMW has always championed a clear and intensive idea of safety for its models. This roadster benefits greatly, welcoming for 2017 two improvements in options. By adding the “Pro Piloting Modes”, the adaptive “Dynamic Brake Light” brake light and ABS Pro reinforce the electronic package..
Now that the liquid-cooled flat-twin has invaded the entire R range, the manufacturer is considering refining its approval. On the menu, or rather as an aperitif, a series of improvements in the transmission, a selection of revised gearbox and the necessary adaptations to switch to Euro4. What reinforce the attractiveness of this gentleman among roadsters.
When most bikers think of trail running, the R 1200 GS comes to mind almost naturally. By switching to the world of GTs, the R 1200 RT is essential. Once the foot on the selector of the roadsters, the evidence is less, the bloated offer, and the R 1200 R does not have the hand put on the dogma of the collective unconscious. And yet, the bike is a formidable efficiency coupled with a successful machine. Perhaps it lacked a touch of aggressiveness … A hint of marked impertinence … By offering it the latest water-cooled Boxer engine and a more alluring design, BMW has also opened up a larger dimension to it in the roadster clan.
The R 1200 R was already an undeniable dynamic success. Grafting it with the most successful of the brand’s Boxers would have been enough to make it even more effective and pleasant. Except that BM wanted to go further, to carry out a transfer in order to expand its clientele and its services..
The design alone expresses a desire for emancipation. Yesterday patinated with a certain sovereignty, calm, almost statutory, the silhouette of the R has become more dynamic, younger, more dashing. The break with the older generation is clear, unequivocal, pushing the established codes towards the exit of artists. Paradoxically, it becomes less original, less “classic-elegance”, in favor of a more bellicose identity. Double-stage saddle, muscular and trimmed tank, refined rear; but it is the front that slaps a whole dynasty of R. May the circle no longer be, facing a lighthouse with a complex surface. Surprising, modern, inspired and almost disturbing, the lighting sponsor insolently sits in front of an inverted 45mm fork. And new croc-en-leg to one of the marked and outstanding characteristics of BMW history: another R which gets rid of the Telelever. It must be said that to accommodate the water radiator, and lack of covering to hide it, the manufacturer had to find space in front of the engine. The dynamics will lose this famous “touch of the road” inherent in this technology and its virtual absence of diving under braking, but should recover a rigor and a sportiness of good quality. This fork, more classic than the Telelever, is closely derived from the S 1000 RR hypersport. As a reference, there are worse. And since the R with water intends to invest an approval of audacity as much as of taxiing, this choice seems very appropriate..
Just like engine development, both logical and inevitable. Logical because the mixed air / water cooled flat-twin has almost invaded the entire range – the R 1200 GS had the privilege of releasing it, and the entire R family was to receive it gradually. Ineluctable because the natural tendency of evolution and the progress of competition mean that techniques, mechanics, humans (ah?) And technologies are constantly evolving. This engine, it is now well known. Cubing 1170 cm3, it marks a clear break with its predecessor: cooled by water in the most stressed areas, it is also distinguished by the integration of the 6-speed gearbox, the clutch in oil bath, with anti dribble function, vertical intake and exhaust flow and upward power. Although this unit is identical in every way to that of the GS, RT, RS and Adventure, its revised air box and exhaust give it a more valiant torque. The power of the German block reaches 125 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 12.7 mkg of torque at 6,500 rpm. That’s 15 horses won on the previous 1200 R, and a bonus of half a mkg.
Fiery, more fiery, with however the majesty of this type of engine and the R philosophy. To have violence, you have to see right next to it, with the cousin S 1000 R.
If you want to find a maximum of technique on this engine, I invite you to find the details in the sheet of the 1200 GS.
BMW retains the construction of a minimalist but efficient frame using the engine as a load-bearing element. However, the perimeter structure in steel tubes is new and developed expressly for the 1200 R. In addition, the rear part is now screwed to the main frame. A real appeasement in the event of a complicated situation; like some event that stamps you the rear section. Suddenly, no need to change the whole frame but only this portion.
With 1515 mm, the new R 1200 R has gained 20 mm in wheelbase. This should optimize stability, yet far from being faulty on the old R. We have already seen that the fork had changed radically, while the Paralever EVO single-sided swings aside. It is not this change of edge that will appeal to the most demanding of the road but the possibility of taking the optional ESA Dynamic damping. The BMW pilot-operated suspension is everywhere, making sure to adapt the damping in real time according to the profile of the road and the information processed in a fraction of a second. The system takes into account the angle taken, acceleration, deceleration and other parameters. In “Road” mode, the system optimizes the settings via small electric motors attached to the suspensions. Switch to “Dynamic” mode and the overall damping becomes firmer for more efficiency.
Dynamic ESA as a possible on-board technician; And that’s not all. As standard or optional, the R 1200 R receives its array of electronic modules. Originally, it comes with ABS, “Rain” and “Road” driving modes, and ASC traction control. After that, it’s up to your wishes and your budget. For example, for 300 balls, we can add the “Pro Riding Modes”, which allows you to swap the ASC for more efficient DTC traction control and upgrade the modes with the addition of “Dynamic” and the “User”. Let’s see the differences:
– Road : the driving aids are adjusted to ensure an optimal balance between performance and comfort on all roads.
– Rain : adaptation of the motorcycle to roads with a low coefficient of grip. In addition, the motorcycle reacts more smoothly to acceleration..
– Dynamic : emphasis on the sporty side of the machine. Spontaneous acceleration response and discreet DTC intervention fully enhance its dynamic potential.
– User : The driver has the flexibility to configure the R 1200 R to his liking, not just in terms of reaction to acceleration. This mode allows him to set the tuning characteristic of DTC Dynamic Traction Control according to his wishes and needs. Thus, the DTC modes “Rain”, “Road” and “Dynamic” can be combined in a completely individual way with the acceleration laws of the modes “Rain”, “Road” and “Dynamic” which determine the reaction to the air. ‘acceleration.
Then there is something to be tempted, as with every treat that a premium manufacturer knows how to value. With the Pro shifter working both upshifts and downshifts, the clutch handle becomes almost obsolete. And the Keyless Ride, which allows you to keep the key in your pocket all the time. It can be nice too.
Yes, it’s cool, but it can quickly escalate. If we think of the heated grips, the ESA Dynamique suspensions, the cruise control, the tire pressure sensor … And then, it can be nice the H-shaped daytime running light, the central stand, small LED indicators ; and we just broke the 16,000 mark. A BMW remains a BMW: valued, rewarding, expensive, almost à la carte, with its customers.
Its customers, the R 1200 R want to feel more playful, more enterprising, make it live the road. The wide handlebars invite a more collected and forward-facing position. However, it is out of the question to be more abrupt at the reception. The BMW takes care of its ergonomics as it is traditional. The saddle, for example, is available with no less than 4 heights. As standard, it peaks at 790. As a free option, large riders can opt for the 820 mm version, or the 840 mm version; on the other hand, a 760 mm is available. The clutch and brake levers are also adjustable in 4 positions.
Here, the brakes, what do they say?!? Serious, as always. The front features two 320mm tracks and 4-piston calipers; which are now radially fixed. For officer with the right foot, a 276mm disc with a 2 piston caliper will be in concert. The bold will appreciate the possibility of disconnecting the ABS.
Beside the paws, the translucent jars welcoming the DOT have given way to less sporty elements. Everyone to enjoy. The dashboard is undergoing an even more drastic change. It’s the same story as for the design: it had to be rejuvenated. The handset retains a needle and a circular track to indicate speed. On the right, digital space, with a long window to indicate the engine speed, the gear ratio engaged, trips, consumption, clock and so on. The display can be personalized in 3 modes: a full mode (Style 0) with two display zones, a Sport mode (Style 1) and a touring mode (Style 2) with a reduced amount of information. To put it simply, nothing beats a much more meaningful glance in the image gallery. But whatever the mode, the screen size is really just right to appreciate the information displayed. The “Pro on-board computer” option allows you to add some more information to the display and control some functions (daytime running lights, gearshift indicator).
The fleet is good for the heat, but it weighs. Just like the trinkets that BM has added everywhere. The R 1200 R took 8 kilos, to display 213 units on the scale. It shouldn’t feel too much when driving, because BMW knows how to build motorcycles that don’t give a damn about weight..
Less quiet in his head than before, the 12R is not offered in several colors but in several styles. Depending on the chosen “trend”, different colors and aspects. From there to conclude that the new R 1200 R wants to get out of the beautiful neighborhoods to hit some hooligans … No; let’s say the lady is fed up with having fun and wants to move on to other distractions ;-).
