At the start of the 80s, BMW saw the rise in power of trails equipped with large-displacement 4T single-cylinder engines. Japanese manufacturers practically all have their 400cc or 500cc models and establish their superiority in this segment..
BMW faces a big problem; it has no engine to compete directly with the XT, XLR and other DR-S. Never mind, BMW Motorrad will fight with its own weapons: the Flat Twin.
Certainly, the first big BMW trail will not have the advantage of lightness and small size. But it allows the brand to offer a different model, admittedly heavier, but also more powerful, more stable and more roadworthy..
The GS uses the 800cc Flat, plenty powerful enough to cope with the 500cc armada of the time. It develops 50 horsepower when the most powerful Japanese of the moment can only predict 32 horsepower (Honda XL500S).
If the template is very impressive with its 167 kg dry (about 185 kg in running order) and its 850mm saddle height, the newcomer remains accessible thanks to its low center of gravity (thank you the flat twin). The BMW is very stable with its large wheelbase required by the length of the powertrain, but agility is not sacrificed.
Without knowing it, BMW Motorrad has just invented a new sub-family: the road trail. Because, it must be admitted, if the GS has good predispositions for rolling tracks and the Paris Dakar version released the same year with strong potential for competition, it shows very great road qualities. The driving position is very pleasant over long distances and it can be equipped for travel thanks to the range of BMW accessories (suitcase, trunk …). In addition, the tireless engine allows you to drive at a good pace, without ever showing signs of fatigue..
Its qualities earned it one of the longest careers in the trail category, BMW updating it on several occasions. Thus, it will be equipped in 1987, with the excellent paraleveler transmission. The same year, it was joined by a more powerful 1000cc version and a smaller, more basic 650cc. The last evolution came out in 1997 and was marketed in France until 1999. Date on which it bowed out after 19 years of good and loyal service.
