Super sports car makes for roadster

With a new chassis, new engine and even more electronics on board, the BMW S 1000 R should offer even more dynamism for the 2021 model year.

Also the new BMW S. 1000 R has only one goal: maximum driving dynamics. To this end, many points have been sharpened for the 2021 model year.

New engine without shift cam

Your in-line four-cylinder is completely new based on the RR engine, but it still delivers 165 hp at 11,000 tours and a maximum of 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm. The usable torque should now be available more widely. The S 1000 R was not allowed to adopt the shift cam technology from the S 1000 RR. For better drivability and lower fuel consumption, the gears have been translated four to six longer. The clutch becomes smoother, the anti-hopping clutch is supported by an engine drag torque control for an extra charge. The exhaust system of the now Euro 5-compliant engine is also completely new. BMW mentions 3.2 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km / h, the top speed is over 250 km / h.

The new frame, derived from the superbike, with a geometry optimized for handling, integrates the engine more strongly as a load-bearing part, making it lighter and slimmer. The driver also sits 15 millimeters further forward. The beam swing arm including deflection kinematics comes directly from the superbike. The shock absorber is completely new and now offers 117 millimeters of travel. The new cast wheels reduce the rotating mass. The handlebar can be adjusted several times at the factory. Overall, this should create a more optimal sitting position.

More electronics

The extended electronics package includes cornering ABS, the Rain, Road and Dynamic driving modes and dynamic traction control with anti-wheelie function. The Pro riding modes with extended features are available for a surcharge. Anyone who orders the electronically controlled chassis can look forward to a completely new set-up and a larger spread. The S 1000 RR also serves as a dispenser for the 6.5 inch TFT display in the cockpit. The display offers various display options and comes with a Bluetooth interface. The displays are controlled via the controller on the left handlebar fitting. An optional M package offers even more display options.

Well-known line, new design

LED technology rules with all lights. The rear indicators integrate the brake and rear light functions. Adaptive headlights with incline-dependent illumination are only given to those who pay. In terms of design, the S 1000 R remains true to its well-known lines, but seems to crouch even further at the front and to stretch the rear even higher. The new lamp and mask, the new side panels and the new engine spoiler are responsible for this. Overall, the new version of the S 1000 R slimmed down by 6.5 kilograms to 199 kilograms (DIN empty). With the optional M-Package including carbon wheels, another 4.8 kilograms are lost.

The new BMW S 1000 R will be available at dealerships from May 2021. The prices then start from 14,740 euros (incl. 19% VAT). The S 1000 R is available as a basic version in Racing Red as well as in the Style Sport variants in silver and the M package in the BMW Motorsport colors. As usual with BMW, the basic price can be easily increased with a lot of additional crosses.

Conclusion

BMW has refined the new S 1000 R in all areas, but has not succumbed to the temptation to raise the naked bike to the 200-hp class. This will not odd the driving pleasure.
