Start of production with problems

The new BMW S 1000 RR has a bumpy start on the market. The super athlete is struggling with a delivery stop and recall due to impending gearbox damage. There are also supplier problems that make things even more difficult.

The first copies of the brand new BMW S. 1000 RR have only just come to the dealerships, delivery has to be stopped for a certain number. Speculations about it in the relevant Internet forums are growing wild. At the request of motorradonline.de, BMW has currently confirmed the delivery stop and recall due to impending transmission damage, but restricts the fact that only “a certain batch” is affected, specifically 340 motorcycles, 113 of which are intended for the German market.

Transmission damage can be imminent

The two press spokesmen Gerhard Lindner and Tim Diehl-Thiele explained the cause of the recall that “during a three-week production period” in May at the Berlin motorcycle plant, one of three identical production tools had an unnoticed defect. As a result, an oil hole in the gearbox may not have been correctly carried out, which in the long term could lead to gearbox damage. “We are now looking at all 340 S 1000 RRs produced at that time. To be on the safe side, we change the motor of those that were manufactured using that machine, ”summed up the two press officers. In view of the total number of motorcycles built in Berlin, this is a “homeopathically small amount.”

Only some of the 340 motorcycles affected by the recall have so far been delivered to customers. According to MOTORRAD information, BMW press spokesman Lindner categorically ruled out a connection with an engine of the brand new super sports car that burst during race training.

The owner cannot tell from the chassis number which tools were used to produce his motorcycle: “The few customers who already have such a motorcycle are now contacted by BMW,” says Lindner. A circular to dealers is also being prepared.

BMW surprised by demand

Regardless of this recall, there are also delays in delivery, according to the two press spokesmen: “We did not expect this mass of orders. In particular, the top equipment in the form of the “M package” is in unexpectedly high demand. According to a letter from the British BMW Motorrad boss to S 1000 RR customers published on the Internet, delivery may even be delayed until the end of 2019 in individual cases. In the letter, UK customers affected by this are offered compensation in the form of a £ 500 retailer voucher if they keep their order. This does not apply to Germany, however: “We will try to keep our customers mobile,” said press spokesman Lindner. Corresponding plans are currently being drawn up by BMW.
