2020 BMW R 1250 RT

She reached it. This delicate, this impalpable point of balance where nothing should be touched. The RT, symbol of road motorcycles, has reached such maturity that BMW no longer dares to modify either the substance or the form. On the other hand, motorization side, we are witnessing a big evolution. Accompanied by a breeze of technological inputs all over the machine. What to crush the competition? It’s already done.

The RT had carefully disgusted the Pan-Europeans, Trophy, GTR and other Norges; maxi-trails have finished them. Today, only the FJR 1300 remains to face it, with its Japanese weapons and its big 4 cylinders full of muscle. The Boxer is not impressed. One might think that he retaliates with this chapter 1250 but not at all. It simply continues its natural evolution since the advent of ‘4 valves per cylinder’ in 1992. It received the double ACT ten years ago, more recently the mixed air / water cooling with a unification of the gearbox and of the motor. With the 1250, it’s double caliber. Let’s see it quietly.
A little more bore, a hint of stroke, a ladle of 84cc more. The recipe seems too simple! BMW wants to offer more than that, a smoother view of driving. In addition to a displacement of 1254 cm3, the engine adopts variable valve timing.

2020 BMW R 1250 RT Take a good look at the cylinder heads: a Shit Cam monogram appears there. This is the name of the technology on which the brand has worked a lot lately. The idea is to vary the opening control of the intake valves depending on the speed. Two profiles, two ways to fill the cylinders. For each valve there is not one but two cams – one at part load, the other at full load, and which opens asynchronously to form a gas vortex. This optimizes the filling at low speeds while being able to favor power at high speeds. Whereas with a single cam profile, it’s all about compromise.
Dac, but how do you go from one cam to another? By sliding the shaft. On one side, a kind of barrel controlled by an electromechanical actuator allows this movement and thus the selection of one or the other set of cams.
I will quickly list the other developments – ACT drive by toothed chain, double click sensor, optimized lubrication, double-jet injectors, revised exhaust line – to achieve the enhanced efficiency of this Boxer. Peak power here reaches 136 horsepower, 11 more than the 1200. The torque gains even more with a generous 14.5 mkg; an increase of almost 2 mkg, and comparable to a larger displacement.
And the best part is not in this swelling of vigor. Its availability, its roundness will be much more expressive. The torque is offered by more than 11 mkg from 2000 to 8250 rpm, and more than 12 mkg between 3500 and 7750 rpm. Never has a BMW Boxer been so powerful, not even in the HP2 Sport. A little extra bonus? It uses less fuel and is quieter.

As we can see, the star of this new generation of RT is this significantly revised engine, technical as you wish, and stronger each time. But can we really speak of a generation when we see this RT so little changed from the look side. Everyone will agree, however, that this interstellar expanse did not suffer from any criticism both in terms of protection and design. There is a well arranged engine guard, several styles of style, identity cylinder head covers … and that’s it. It is extremely rare that a BM does not modernize its plastic by renewing its mechanics.

So Madame de la route, are you betting everything on your heart to capsize the hearts of the big rollers?!? Hasty judgment one would say. We are in a phase of technological expansion where security accreditation modules are flourishing within sensors and algorithms..
2020 BMW R 1250 RTFor not very long now, two driving modes (Rain / Road), ABS Pro, dynamic brake light and ASC anti-skidding have extended the gesture of the right hand. Hill Start Control, hill start aid, changes from optional spoke to standard equipment.
By the way, what can we find in the additional catalog of the R 1250 RT? Among the hundred or so accessories and options, we can find the Akra silencer, HP parts, luggage, Option 719 customization parts, different height and heated saddles, a Pro shifter, Pro riding modes ( Dynamic mode + traction control), a GPS, an emergency call, a body + motorcycle shower gel 250 ml (true) … and for something new,

It happens in the brakes. Not for the material, still very good with its 320 mm discs bitten by radial Brembo clamps with 4 pistons. No, on the adaptation side instead. The new Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) intervenes during hard braking to reduce engine torque and give maximum power to the rear brake. The bike is better stabilized and brakes shorter.
For those who appreciate adaptive comfort, the ESA ‘Next Generation’ is also coming to the RT. Inaugurated on the essential R 1200 GS in 2017, this automatic damping system takes into account the on-board load. It therefore modulates the work of the suspensions according to the condition of the road, driving and the choice of type of damping to adjust the attitude and efficiency of the suspensions..
You surprise me that the design does not change; Looks like everyone works in the engine and electronics departments.

This would almost make us forget the great virtue of the BMW RT: driving! Far, long, serenely. You can always enjoy a driving position rich in decades of experience, a multimedia package on board, a substantial range with the 20-liter tank, suitcases ready to accommodate the effects of a weekend, with a saddle adjustable to two heights, 805 or 825 mm. Other altitudes are available as an option. The dashboard, always very complete with its digital color screen and its beautiful counters, is not getting old but would benefit from a little grooming. The unchanged chassis logically retains its high level of approval, with the Telelever fork and the Paralever single-sided arm anchored to a steel tube frame.
And the weight ? Five kilos more. Is it serious doctor ? Think therefore; on a 279 kilogram machine, you won’t see a difference. And with the ardor of the engine, you will have the impression that it is 30 kilos less during the relaunch.

2020 BMW R 1250 RT A delicate moment comes, the choice of color. It will be more complicated now, because we no longer reason in color but in style. On the RT, like on other Bavarian models, it’s not just the paint that changes. You’ll see.
– Let’s keep it simple, classic, and opt for the basic color. A beautiful paint, a few touches of black, a nice amount of metallic silver. It’s soft and elegant.
– We can have more precious, more raised, with the Elegance version. More contrast with metallic silver against a dark dress, gold brake calipers, and some chrome elements
– Get noticed ? There is the Sport version. A strong slamming red, matte gray cylinder head covers, golden brake calipers and a shorter bubble bring a more dynamic feel.
– Finally, we can have more noble decorations with the Spezial versions. The proprietary color takes its ease on more surfaces; we find chrome, specific finishing details, and a certain tendency to make you covet the Options 719.

More self-confident than ever, the BMW roadster undertakes to further enhance the value of driving, raising it to a higher level of pleasure … that the former had already placed very high. Its 1250 engine has not finished talking about it. We can always rail against the robust price, the endless list of options and the technological overabundance of productions from across the Rhine – but admit that the bike is presented as totally successful, efficient, and serene in its missions. A BMW R 1250 RT desires the roads, and perhaps they dared not marry with such temper.
