The big, spirited roadster from BMW has carved out a strong reputation since its release. It must be said that by being closely derived from the hypersport RR, the S 1000 R already had all the genetics to mark the route of a high dose of adrenaline.. A slap in the face, especially since the beast knew how to highlight a strong technological content.
At the time of Euro4, the German roadster not only knows how to adapt to this standard but takes the opportunity to revitalize itself and enhance its sporting potential a notch. The S 1000 R is big heart and it’s much more.
A barrel of gunpowder, even closer than before to an addicting spark. The design of the S 1000 R is true to character. BMW, however, was cautious (as usual) in retouching the features of the naked missile. No way to upset the eyes, most junkies have become accustomed to this silhouette. To that crooked face which is just waiting for a change of humor to give you a headache; to this profile of a brute mastered by metal; to this very German expression of force. The designers were just allowed to fine-tune the side panels and the passenger seat. The only way to quickly identify this development is with the exhaust. The S 1000 R is equipped with a larger, more present exhaust, and very well made. A titanium piece from Akrapovic, sprinkled with carbon elements and signed HP. It’s bulky, but it looks good.
Quietly placed while awaiting hostilities or heading towards the arsenal, the machine blocks, threatens without provoking, patient to feel the ordeals crashing on it to laugh about it. The S 1000 R has something to answer for, since its inception. Its vigorous 4-cylinder took advantage of the new regulations to gain 5 horsepower. And then, here is the fury gauge which shifts to 165 nags. Something to quench thirst for adrenaline. But also all those whose morning expresses itself with wisdom and the afternoon under high tension. This block, coming from the S 1000 RR, knows how to be pleasant and usable on a daily basis, with generous accessibility in the first half of the tachometer – as it is angry and explosive in high revs. A fine and strong mechanism, able to dance waltz, techno and hardcore.
It loses a little bit in torque, 114 Nm instead of 115; negligible. As a bonus, the voice became deeper, accompanying his muscular character. The cherry ? The S 1000 R lost 2 kilos, appearing at 205 barrels on the scale.
Lightning, a slew of assistants can help channel it. We will come to that, but let’s take a look at the chassis which will take the strain. Also extrapolated from the RR, the main frame has evolved somewhat since the previous generation of the roadster. A similar design, but with a lighter rear end, a reworked frame / swingarm assembly for more precision, stiffness, optimized flexibility and improved traction. These changes necessitated a redesign of the foot controls.
This is what further boost the efficiency of the S 1000 R. If you want to make it even more incisive, a pair of HP rims (2.4 kilos less) is available as an option. Exactly, there is also the Shifter Pro as an option, to up and down gears on the fly, forgetting the clutch..
Do not hang around (but do not move away) in the corner of the options, too tempting, and see what the machine offers in series on the electronic side. ABS, of course, compulsory and BM’s workhorse for a long time, here in a Race version. As well as ASC traction control and two Piloting modes. The “Road” for standard driving and the “Rain” in difficult conditions. For something new, we have to come back to options. And take the “Pro Piloting Mode”. This gives access to a “Dynamic” mode, very sporty, and the new “User” mode; this is configurable.
This “Pro” pack also contains Pro ABS, which is responsive when cornering, as well as a start control, a configurable pit speed limiter and DTC dynamic traction control. In short, a nice transfusion from the S 1000 RR.
BMW takes advantage of the operation to touch up the instrument cluster very slightly, just to make it more readable. And fine-tune the fixing of the handlebars, for less vibrations.
BM has not touched the peripherals of the chassis, effective enough for any type of use. A nice inverted fork of 46 mm and a single shock absorber, both adjustable from everywhere. The DDC option with controlled damping automates all this for you. Braking remains in the hands of Brembo, with 4-piston radial calipers at the front. But it is time for the brand to consider moving upmarket in this area. In addition, more competitors benefit from the M50 calipers, at the current big top.
When it comes to putting some serious beating on the road, quite a few roadsters play the shake while a handful of reckless take it a step above. The S 1000 R is one of them. Colliding with the KTM 1290 Superduke R, Yamaha MT-10, Ducati Monster 1200 R and Aprilia Tuono V4 RR, the German powder keg evolves with discretion and a clear desire to shatter emotion once the kettle is launched. The machine is safe and self-confident. But the trap is in your right hand. Once it swivels, everything can go very quickly, and only asks for that.
