The presentation of the HP4 Race prototype at the EICMA 2016 show had us mouth watering and the backbone in tension. BMW had warned that this concept would quickly lead to series production. The realization of a rather surreal, phantasmagorical and unreasonable sportswoman. And here it is. Equipped with the top of technology, a boosted engine and a sick chassis, the BMW HP4 Race reduces to the tiny limit between the production motorcycle and a Superbike machine – like the Ducati 1299 Superleggera or some prepared pistards (Aprilia RSV4-FW, etc …)
BMW HP4 RACE: high-tech and handmade innovation for top performance on the track.
Historically, technical solutions dedicated to maximum performance on the track characterize factory racing motorcycles, perfected down to the smallest detail and handpicked. The HP4 RACE presented by BMW is a thoroughbred racing motorcycle that will be built in a limited edition of 750 copies. Its manufactured manufacture has been entrusted to a small, highly specialized team, which guarantees quality of the highest level..
As for the mechanical assembly, electronics and suspension elements, the HP4 RACE does not yield to the factory bikes currently aligned in Superbike; as for the cycle part with its carbon frame, it is even a notch above. Weighing in at 171 kilograms in running order and fully packed, the HP4 RACE even outperforms the current factory bikes competing in the Superbike World Championship and barely exceeds the weight of official motorcycles entered in MotoGP..
Industrially manufactured carbon monocoque main frame with self-supporting rear end, carbon wheels.
By launching the HP4 RACE, BMW is allowing itself to manufacture in small series of a 100 percent carbon main frame weighing only 7.8 kilograms and thus to make this promising technology accessible to as many people as possible..
The front and rear rims are made from the same high-tech material which provides some 30 percent weight reduction compared to forged light alloy rims in the presence of a targeted stiffness design..
Ohlins suspension components, lower braced swingarm and one-piece Brembo brake calipers from the World Superbike Championship.
The HP4 RACE also responds to the ambition of higher level racing technology in terms of suspension and brake components. The FGR 300 type inverted fork and the TTX 36 GP type spring / damper combination are both supplied by the Swedish OEM Ohlins and are implemented in a strictly identical form in the Superbike World Championship as well as in MotoGP. Another component that matches what is used at the Superbike World Championship is the light alloy bottom braced swingarm made of milled parts and sheet metal parts..
The brake system of the HP4 RACE comprises two Brembo monobloc brake calipers of the GP4 PR type, components which are also rather the prerogative of motorcycles aligned in the world championship. The titanium pistons and one-piece aluminum calipers with nickel-plated surfaces represent the best combination of materials currently available in the field. Combined with T-Type-Racing steel brake discs, 320 millimeters in diameter and 6.75 millimeters thick, the system provides exceptional braking performance.
Thoroughbred racing engine and “close ratio” racing gearbox with gear ratios adapted according to the World Championship specification.
The HP4 RACE benefits from a thoroughbred racing engine resembling specifications 6.2 and 7.2, as in the World Endurance and Superbike Championship. Peak power is 158 kW (215 hp) at 13,900 rpm. Maximum torque of 120 Newton-meters is achieved at 10,000 rpm. The maximum speed has been increased to 14,500 rpm against 14,200 rpm on the S 1000 RR engine. Aiming for maximum performance, the motorcycle uses a six-speed “close ratio” type gearbox distinguished by an optimized staging of the ratios and various secondary transmissions (delivery with several sprockets and chain rings).
Weight-optimized electrical system, 2D dashboard and DTC dynamic traction control, EBR engine brake, anti-wheeling protection and other electronic components.
The BMW HP4 RACE is equipped with a complete package of electronic regulation and assistance systems as well as a weight-optimized electric on-board network, developed to meet the demands of the race. 2D dashboard with extractable data memory and 2D data logger) provides a wealth of information.
The acoustically perceptible DTC dynamic traction control managed by ignition cut-off, EBR engine brake and anti-wheeling protection offer many possibilities of adaptation to different circuits and different track conditions. They can be programmed for each gear, according to the wishes of the pilot, and allow to exploit ideally the enormous dynamic potential of the new HP4 RACE. Other electronic elements: the Pit lane limiter which monitors compliance with the speed limit in the pit lane and the Launch Control which ensures perfect race starts.
Lightweight carbon fairing elements and hand-brushed aluminum tank.
The carbon fairing, the airbox cover and the seat cowl of the HP4 RACE feature the BMW HP Motorsport colors. A hand-brushed aluminum tank, then coated with a transparent varnish, underlines the high-end racing look.
The highlights of the BMW HP4 RACE at a glance:
– Carbon monocoque main frame weighing only 7.8 kilograms on the scale.
– Self-supporting carbon frame rear part, adjustable to three heights.
– Approximately 30 percent less weight carbon rims compared to forged light alloy rims.
– Ohlins inverted fork type FGR 300.
