The early morning cold freezes the bones, discourages lovers of the duvet, tempers the beautiful ardor … and gently makes the K 1200 GT laugh. Protective fairing, high windshield, heated saddle and grips, the chills will choose another target than its pilot.
The K 1200 GT is actually half a novelty. It is drawn up from the RS, the distribution of which is rather confidential. Powerful (130 hp in full) but too heavy for a sports car, imposing but not comfortable enough for a GT, its rather ambiguous positioning leaves it little hope in the French market. So BMW pulled out its magic wand. We keep the engine and the chassis, we improve the fairing, we modify the height of the screen (electric) and the handlebars (which is no longer adjustable), and we install a wider and thicker saddle. What is missing to make it a good GT? What to put his things. So soon said, so soon done: a small luggage rack and 2 suitcases with body-colored painted lids are supplied as standard. From a big sporty look, the K 1200 becomes an elegant and respectful road. We would gladly compare it to a Falcon in the world of aviation.
Even becoming road, it keeps a little something of RennSport. The pilot is leaning somewhat forward. It is slightly tiring in town. We are surprised by the maneuverability of this big motorcycle, which does not forget that it weighs nearly 300 kgs.
By embarking on beautiful (and long) courses, the picture is close to the idyllic. The buttocks pampered by the seat, evolving in a cocoon without being disturbed by the moods of the air, we meet in a gentle tranquility. Supple, available, wise at low revs and strong beyond, the large 4-cylinder is an iron fist in a velvet glove. He pushes you hard in all situations.
When the departmental turns, this corpulent BM needs to be driven on the handlebars, and its inertia due to the weight requires a little more than improvisation. It drives well, very well for a machine of this size, but remember that it is not a CBR that you have in your hands. And unlike the latter, rough roads do not destroy comfort, nor deviate the K 1200 from its trajectory. If you see a doe, don’t panic. The braking power is superb; just think about how the BM system works. It is not the pressure exerted but the stroke of the lever that controls the intensity of the action.
You might think so, but the K 1200 GT does not compete with the R 1150 RT. It completes the Bavarian manufacturer’s road range. The RT is more manoeuvrable and protects even better. The K has a more respectable breath. A competitor of choice for the FJR 1300, which could also tickle the 1300 Pan -European. Certainly a new queen of the road.
