This sports car promises to be a very successful and surprising model on many points, brandishing a lot of technological developments and / or revolutions..
Question power, there is no doubt. The new 4-cylinder in-line develops the respectful power of 167 hp. This engine benefited from the attentive eye of German engineers: surprisingly narrow, its width at the level of the crankshaft is similar to that of certain 600 cc 4-cylinder engines – a block with super-square dimensions, lubricated by dry sump and provided with 2 shafts. balancing. Unlike the mill of the RS and LT, this one is installed transversely under the frame and anchored with a strong inclination (would the new R1 have made school?). A large potential very available: the boiler outputs 13 mkg of torque at 8,250 rpm, 70% of which is available from 3,000 rpm.
The K 1200 S: the most powerful production BMW in the brand’s history. But it is only the smallest of innovations that inhabits it. It is especially on the side of the part-cycle that everything is revolutionized. Goodbye the traditional fork. BM had struck a first blow by introducing the very effective Telelever. He goes even further by creating a new type of front axle: the Duolever. An articulated quadrilateral formed of two quasi-parallel longitudinal arms articulated on the frame and allowing a precise lifting movement to the front wheel. The result is ultra-responsive and incredibly stable steering. Another innovation is added: the adjustment of spring preload and damping electronically, by simply pressing a button on the handlebars.
Let us also mention the reduced size of the transmission (still by cardan joint), a new cassette gearbox, a catalytic exhaust, ABS, and a more racy aesthetic than usual. The sharp angles are more pronounced, but the K 1200 RS lineage presents with more dynamism. At the beginning of September, a handful of lucky people will be able to try out the K 1200 S. Then, the bike will be on display at the INTERMOT Show in Munich. The commercialization of this model will follow immediately..
In its own way, BM presents a sportswoman of race, at the same time noble, muscular and, according to the German staff, very effective. A competitor of choice for the CBR 1100 XX and GSX-R Hayabusa. And who knows, some sharper sportswomen could bump their teeth into it.
An M3 on two wheels … Why this comparison? It’s simple: a high-performance machine that does not fall into the radicalism imposed by the references in its segment. Because if the K 1200 S is shielded with technology and watts, its design remains that of a great lady of the road, not of a pure circuit toy. A starter and the mill will quickly put our ideas in place. Once the pistons are awakened, you immediately feel that there is great potential in there. Even the sound that escapes from the huge silencer betrays an awesome breath.
Boarding, installation, satisfaction. The driving position promises to be comfortable, although a little elongated, favored by an ideally designed tank as well as very well located handles and footrests. We take off this long and slender bird which very quickly reveals itself to be surprisingly easy to handle. There may be 1200 marked on the tank but it’s almost as easy as a 600. The thruster reminds you that you are on a big caliber..
Vibrating slightly (crescendo with the speed), the boiler is already pushing seriously in low revs, without showing as much potato as a 1300 GSX-R. It is still hearty and it gets stronger around 6000 trs until the next level. After 8000 revs, the mill sends the big cavalry with a nice deluge of decibels. It sends strong, very strong; no production BMW has ever been so powerful and so fast. Bluffing, and even more to notice the excellent protection. We can go very quickly without having to go into the counters.
“And this famous piloted suspension, how does it work?” Surprising! With the ‘normal’ mode, the sports car gives us excellent road holding and good stability while remaining very pleasant to drive. The ‘comfort’ mode does not even affect the serenity of the machine while increasing that of the pilot. We will only be tempted to choose the ‘sport’ mode on tortuous journeys and / or if the desire to arsenic arises. It is selected from the handlebars, the on-board electronics act alone on the suspensions, which has the effect of improving the liveliness of the machine and the feeling of the road. Just awesome !
The ideal sportswoman? No not yet. Although agile, the K 1200 S requires some effort to be placed on the angle (250 kg, it cannot be handled like an R6). The braking power is impressive but can be brutal for those uninitiated to the BM system. Good point: the front does not dive and the ABS reassures. The box has made progress compared to other models from Munich, but there is still work to be done to reach the level of the Japanese. What we can already say is that the K 1200 S is shaping up to be the best BMW ever produced. It will cost a little more than € 15,000 to afford this little gem of technology, which pushes the innovation cap very far..
