THE ship of the road. A new dimension of dynamic tourism, where comfort and liveliness cannot exist without each other. This symbiosis is the essence of this K 1600 GTL. An ambassador of Grand Tourism at the BMW, endowed with a prestigious engine, an empress silhouette and a formidable pride.

The pinnacle of the BMW Motorrad range, the K 1600 GTL comes to replace the K 1200 GT bluntly and overturning all the codes established by the latter. No more bourgeois GT concept to compete with the Honda Goldwing. The newcomer wants to be much more dynamic, less chubby in its lines as in its behavior. Moreover, it does not really compete with the GL 1800 but would rather be placed between the Pan-European and the Gold. The German is much lighter than the Japanese, with 50 kilos of difference, and its windmill does not play the same score. Behème is also a car builder, so one could easily draw a comparison with a 550i. Compared to the K 1600 GT, the GTL is intended to be more road, more comfortable, more sedan. Its protection is better with a larger caliber bubble, and the seat more senatorial, with a lower saddle and lower and advanced footrests..

The big highlight of this new K is its engine. The in-line 6 cylinder is almost a religion at BMW automobiles, where the different displacements are benchmarks. But in motorcycles, this architecture has not equipped very few models in history (Kawasaki Z 1300, Honda CBX 1000, Benelli 750 Sei). And today, only the GL 1800 Goldwing is powered by a 6-legged, flat-faced engine. BMW has therefore given itself the means to offer an engine of nobility, and extremely well designed. The boiler weighs only 102.6 kilos, for a width of 56 cm (which is narrower than a gas stove). It develops 160 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and almost 18 mkg at 5,000 rpm. 70% of this muscle is available from 1500 rpm, that is to say just above idle. The brand is so proud of its engine that the belly pan is largely cut out to highlight the side cases. The silencers are also a snap with two triples exiting the throttle.
Essential today on temperamental engines, the choice of injection mapping is present on this GTL in three configurations:
– Rain, with decreased power and smoother engine response
– Road, the right compromise between performance and an increased preference for fuel economy
– Dynamic, where the engine doesn’t give a damn about the fuel to offer the pilot all his enthusiasm and the smoothness of his ballet of cylinders.

As it has done in the field of cars, the Bavarian brand instills the same demand for excellence in its new mechanics for two-wheelers. If the S 1000 RR has kicked off the Japanese in the sports sector, the 6-cylinder of the K 1600 brings superior vigor to the road segment. But it is not only in mechanics that we install added value. Standard or optional, the K 1600 will be under the thumb of a small army of electronic chips. Injection maps, ABS, traction control, ESA (automatic suspension adjustment), cruise control, tire pressure indicator, and particularly interesting novelty, lighting that adapts to the profile of the road. Basically, xenon lighting corrects itself according to the movements of the motorcycle, and allows you to light up the road once in the turn, whereas traditional lighting tends to light up the aisle and the rabbits that walk in the fields. Wink or harmonization of production: note that the night lights are now circles of light around the headlights, as on the cars of the German manufacturer.

Equally technological, the chassis relies on the solutions developed by and for BMW, especially at the level of the links to the ground. Already present on the K 1300 (since the K 1200 S in fact), the front axle consists of the famous double Duolever arm, assisted (optional) by the ESA 2 and a pair of 4-piston brake calipers. As hooked to a BM road as a slider to its combarde, the Paralever is always in the game, combining the elegance of a single-sided drive with a cardan transmission, articulated to get rid of torque effects. These elements are joined by a completely new aluminum frame. Its side members in a perimeter structure diverge at the gearbox to pass above the engine cylinder head, which is itself tilted 55 ° forward.

Superb in mechanics, comely in technology, the K 1600 GTL must also be of the highest caliber for the cruises that its rank imposes on it. And traveling is his thing. It takes with you as standard two side cases, a large top-case also playing the role of passenger backrest, 27.5 liters of fuel (the tank of the K 1600 GT is smaller), sound system, handles and saddles heaters, cruise control, on-board computer, and a control station similar to that of Bavarian sedans. Between the traditional needle counters is housed a 5.7-inch TFT screen allowing you to control all the functions of the bike. You manipulate it via an idrive wheel, with your left hand; technique that appeared on series 7 cars. Between the dials and the electrically adjustable screen, you will find a place to house the in-house GPS, and thus make your dashboard a real Airbus cockpit.

This K 1600 GTL completes the rejuvenation of the BMW image. Before, the brand’s road cars were cushy, comfortable machines, but without much of the thrill. Now, BMW Grand Touring will become a benchmark full of dynamism and prestige. Its engine is the only inline 6 on the market, its technology makes it a shock cruiser, and its capabilities clearly seem a cut above, although fans of senatorial comfort will find it a bit too sporty. Today, BMW is leading the way.
