The S 1000 RR is BMW’s first hypersport; his first foray into a fight led and mastered by the Japanese quartet. Hyper-powerful, incisive, packed with electronic assistance, the S 1000 RR burns the comparisons of the press and sweat many pilots. Unfortunately, the fallout did not live up to Behème’s expectations: in World Superbike, it’s not a party – in Endurance, she is ahead but she wins little. On the other hand, in French SBK, it is the jackpot. In European Superstock, it pays off. And always in the field of world endurance, the potential is there, more and more teams choose it, and when it makes pendulums, it takes more than hanging on to follow it..

After having unsoldered many times, the S 1000 RR was entitled to its first evolution for 2012. As with the vast majority of hypersports this year, this new opus is quite timid and concerns more points of detail. Let’s take a closer look.

Fans again will moan, those who bought an S 1000 RR last month much less about the new design of the beast: almost identical to the previous one! Its stylistic peculiarities which are the headlights and asymmetrical fairing panels (very finely redesigned) remain. The changes are symbolic: a refined rear part, the airbox cover with grilles, small transparent fins favoring the aerodynamics between the fairing and the fork crown, and to conclude, let us point out tiny retouching at the level of the cleats feet.

As aggressive, as intimidating, the German hypersport didn’t need a wash. So, she concentrated her efforts to offer even more efficiency and agility. Its new geometry is achieved by reducing the wheelbase to 1422.7 mm (or 9.3 mm less), increased trail, offset and fork overhang as well as a reduced head angle. These elements have changed in minimal proportions but enough to give more precision and more maneuverability..
Revised at the front as at the rear, the suspensions offer more feeling and improved work. Internal fork valves and shifts provide better damping response. The AR handset is internally modified a lot to get more responsiveness to settings and significantly more efficient oil work. To adapt to the optimized geometry of the chassis, the axis of the swingarm is raised by 4 mm.
To calm the ardor of the front axle, the RR has a steering damper adjustable in 10 positions.

Better to the chassis will it go hand in hand with an engine development? Yes and no. No, because the German block keeps the same values ​​as on the old version. No big deal, because they are already at the top of the category: 193 horsepower at 13,000 rpm (much more in reality) in an engine weighing less than 60 kilos. The torque value also remains at 112 nm.
Yes, because the on-board electronics have been changed everywhere; or rather upgraded.
The engine management used to have 4 laws for the Rain, Sport, Race and Slick driving modes. There are only 2 left: one for rain, one for the other 3 modes. The pilot no longer needs to adapt each time to a different reaction to the opening of the throttle.
The engine engineers have injected into the Ecu 3 optimized power curves, and an enriched Rain mode of 11 hp (163 now); while another team added a tooth to the crown. If the S 1000 RR comes out as many horsepower as yesterday, its power and torque curves have swelled slightly. It’s not just reprogramming there but also a modified airbox, air intake duct and trumpets as well as a redesigned exhaust line. This plus a shortened final gear ratio promises us a gain in times and vigorous exits from the curve..
When decelerating, the mapping manages the residual torque better to obtain more stability under braking. As for the DTC, BMW has refined it a little more. The anti-wheeling system acts more smoothly and the traction control gains in performance and tuning quality.

The dashboard, already very rich in information, still wins some small goodies. First of all a ‘’Best lap in progress”, a function indicating to the pilot every 100 m if his intermediate time is better or worse than the previous lap. Then comes the ‘’Speedwarning’ ‘, a reminder for speed. Program a speed limit, and as soon as it is exceeded, the shift-light comes on to warn you while SPEED is displayed on the screen. Note also the possibility of deactivating the lighting fault appearing when the headlights and indicators are released (runway use).

First touch-up for the BMW S 1000 RR: timid touch-up. Its level is such that it does not really need to go through the revolution box. A host of small changes have been made, which will not change its behavior much but will allow it to stay one step ahead of its competitors. Except with the Kawasaki ZX-10 R and the imminent 1199 Panigale (which promises to be surreal). Let us specify a detail, admittedly anecdotal but remarkable: the S 1000 RR is the only hypersport to offer optional heated grips..
