Driving a Buell is an intense, trippy moment, a source of rare, pure and wild emotions. A toy with a strong temperament that ignores any compromise, shakes up ideas and makes you share the rage it has in its belly. The X1 is the opposite of an XJR 1300. A voluptuous and felted point of dimension of a 4 cylinder with its flexibility and its good manners. Here, it’s crude American mechanics. The rocked twin Harley that equips the Lightning gets a nasty boost. Brought to 95 nags by the Buell workshops, the big mill develops an incredible potato in the mid-range.
A thousand times unfortunately, the final reduction, imposed by the homologation standards, strain the performance of the machine. Infuriating. Especially after having tasted the excellent road handling and the vitality of the American road handling … as long as you are playing on billiards. On less maintained roads, the suspensions do an inglorious job. Although inverted, the fork may be overtaken by strong braking. Because power, the big front disc is not lacking.
To match the strong mechanical personality of the bike, the design is singularly revealing. Stocky appearance, pot and shock absorber stashed under the engine, passenger seat almost non-existent – It’s clear, it looks good. Forget the practicalities, the machine only exists for adrenaline. A motorcycle that demands passion, that is experienced more than it is driven.
