Honda DCT transmission: it’s in the box ?

Introduced in 2010 on, the Honda DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) dual-clutch gearbox has so far met with limited success with bikers. But the interests of this technology (speed and comfort when changing gears, in particular) would begin to overcome received ideas and attract more and more users according to Honda France…
The DCT box at a glance |
Used in cars for ten years (by the Volkswagen group, in particular), the DCT double clutch is based on a "conventional" gearbox – with forks and barrels – managed by two juxtaposed oil bath multi-disc clutches and above all independent: one for odd reports, the other for peers. This system operates under the orders of an electronic control unit which detects the right moment to change gear before actuating the device by means of two solenoid valves: when the first is engaged, for example, the central unit pre-engages the second gear in 70 milliseconds (!), releases the clutch from first gear and locks second via hydraulic circuits placed under the engine crankcase. Two driving modes with fully automated management of gear changes are available on the handlebars: "D" for a very flexible ride – even very soft… – and "S" where the gears are pushed for a more sporty driving. A manual mode "MT" allows you to shift gears from a flick to the left stalk. Since 2012, the DCT "2.0" allows a manual up or down speed even when one of the two auto modes is engaged (read in particular our). |
Greatly improved in 2012 – still on the -, the second generation DCT transmission is now optional on the Honda V4 road, the, the economy and – as standard – the "scooter-motorcycle" .
And according to Christophe Decultot, CEO of Honda France (auto and motorcycle), the work done to resolve its small flaws as well as the communication efforts made by the leading manufacturer to publicize this device would start to bear fruit..
Asked about this during the EICMA motorbike show in Milan 2012, the big boss of the Reds told us that no less than "60% of those currently ordered in the are models equipped with DCT" !
Despite its higher cost of 1000 € and its greater weight of 10 kg, this technology would convince more and more tricolor motorcyclists: in France, the proportion of equipped with DCT now reaches "about 30%" assures Honda, while it would be "5%" on basic orders .
For Christophe Decultot, if it is still too early to claim victory and consider generalizing the double clutch to all motorcycles in the range, this trend is nevertheless indicative of a certain change in mentality. According to the French DG, it would also prove the validity of the winged brand’s strategy concerning the DCT and the merits of its adaptation to more and more models..
In the editorial staff of Site, the lack of perspective from the success of the DCT encourages more caution as to its real acceptance by traditionally conservative motorcyclists and fiercely attached to the feeling of freedom that comes from changing gears … "to the ‘Ancient" ! Business to follow: stay connected.
