Motorcycle clothing for women in a practical test
More and more clothing brands are offering suits, helmets, gloves and boots especially for women. But how do these parts differ from the standard range for the lords of creation? Our MOTORRAD girls put ten sets to the practical test.
Jasmin Krause, Tobias Beyl
09/15/2016
Dina, Sigrun, Iris, Catherine and Aileen couldn’t be more different. From the asphalt queen to the off-road enthusiast, everything is included. They test ten outfits from a total of 27 manufacturers for us and also take a closer look at them in the practical test. Can the women’s products in sizes 34 to 44 really keep what they promise? Despite the tailored cut, some things unfortunately only differ from the rest of the range in terms of design. And that can get pretty tricky. Because only motorcycle clothing that fits perfectly can offer the best possible protection. The lack of innovation in the helmets is particularly noticeable. Except for the C3 Pro Women from Schuberth no helmet was developed especially for women.

It looks different with the shoes. From boots with different heels to ankle boots to street shoes, everything that makes women’s hearts beat faster is included. And what about the clothing sizes? Every manufacturer has its own guidelines. However, these differ from one another by up to ten centimeters in body size. That’s almost four dress sizes. So women should always take a look at the size chart and your figure type.
The little all-rounder

All-rounder outfit 1
As a fan of large all-round bikes, Dina (158 cm) skilfully reaches for the short sizes.
“And it smells good!” When I described my new favorite jacket, the Lady Style by Segura, not only as “great, supple and superbly finished”, but also praised her odor, my colleagues could hardly help but laugh. But it’s just really great, the jacket. Or both, because it is actually a leather jacket with protectors and an inner jacket that can also be worn as a casual hooded zipper. The French 38 fits German 36 women.
Held’s jeans actually turn out just right – the fact that they are still too long is “only” due to my short legs. Knee protectors are already included, and the additional pockets on the hips are great. Boots, gloves and helmets all use pink to inspire women. Shoei leaves it at these external changes to the unisex helmet, while the waterproof gloves from Rukka and above all the shoes from Bering clearly only for women. The boots are great for everyday use, but short-footed people have problems shifting gears on a motorcycle because the heel is then annoying. The size gain of the Lady Pilot GTX is better Daytona solved: Thanks to the thick cork sole, you gain height all over your foot, a total of around six centimeters.
My second new favorite item is the Buse trousers: The short 36 fits my one-fifty-eight like a glove. In addition, well thought-out and high-quality workmanship. The triple gatherable sleeves of the Ixs jacket are also great. Unfortunately, I miss this option at the waist of the very airy and light summer jacket.
The Dainese gloves look very sporty and safe, but are rather small. DL corresponds to 7.5 and just suited me. Held’s special women’s helmet is especially designed for narrow heads, which I think is great!

The curvy globetrotter

Globetrotter outfit 1
Big breasts, round hips, narrow waist. Touring driver Sigrun knows how to put her curves in the limelight.
The most beautiful connection between two points is a curve. Not only my colleagues from the MOTORRAD test editorial team know that, but I do too. That’s why I pay particular attention to the fit and fit of the protectors. The Difi textile suit surprised me positively in this test. It fits perfectly and the protectors do not slip. Although it is one of the cheapest in the test field, it can keep up with the competition, which is almost twice as expensive in terms of quality. I particularly like the air permeability, and women can easily stow everything in their pockets. A great summer combination that scores extra points with its look.
Schuberth advertises that the C2 Pro Women should be particularly quiet, which I cannot confirm with my practical test. In my opinion, the fit doesn’t differ much from the men’s version either. Compared to the S2, it is even a bit larger. Still a great helmet that is worth the money.
The Daytona Evoque GTX are made for women with very narrow feet, much like them Probiker Gloves fit very tight. With the winter jacket from Pharao I am well equipped for all seasons thanks to the removable lining. With me, the protectors sit right away where they belong. Unfortunately, this cannot be confirmed by colleagues with a smaller chest size.
It looks similar with the touring pants from Ixs. It sits extremely comfortably even after several hours of driving, but a woman with a narrower hips would have problems here too. The hard track gloves from Held fit like a glove and give great feedback. It looks similar with Vanucci’s Alice boots. The three centimeter high heels are great when driving and ensure a firm footing at the traffic lights. The helmet from Touratech Unfortunately it was a bit too big for me, but otherwise met all my expectations.

Racerin outfit 1
So far, Iris has also easily resorted to leather suits for men. Will that change after this test??
“Pick two outfits that are as different as possible!”, that was the order. And now I’m standing there with two two-piece suits. Actually, I wanted a nice black and pink one-piece from Dainese, nice and comfortable in size 38. It’s just stupid that it only corresponds to a common 32. But even an Italian 42 would probably have only partially fit with my proportions. Instead, a two-piece suit like the ProSports, in which the protectors sit exactly right, but there is pinch in the crotch and pelvis. So I would have to take one size larger and then hope that the protectors still fit.
Bering’s gloves are a bit small, but thanks to their mix of leather and textile, they are particularly impressive in the cold. Maybe I grew overnight, because the otherwise decently made Sidi boots are too tight. So better buy one size larger, then you have feminine decorated boots with a good feeling of security. The RPHA 11 from HJC Incidentally, it is only a lady’s helmet in terms of its decor. According to the helmet test in MOTORRAD 9/2016 but also a very good one in the crash test.
The second leather suit comes from Buse and fits better – except for the oppressive collar. Shoulder and elbow protectors fit perfectly. So that the back protector still finds space, I would have to go one size larger. The Held gloves are a bit tighter than the Bering counterpart, but are otherwise very comfortable.
One of my highlights were the Dainese boots: high-quality workmanship, great looks, good feeling of protection. And the second: the Icon helmet. With the bizarre, but lovingly drawn, colorful figures you will always attract attention.

Catherine really emphasizes her figure: pronounced shoulders, full breasts and narrow hips.
In my private life, I often wear men’s clothes on the motorcycle because they just look good on my figure. On the other hand, I can do without pink. On the other hand, I like the Cafe Racer leather jacket much better, which is only slightly tailored and with a double-row zipper is not only a visual highlight. Unfortunately, the sleeves are a bit too long, which is especially noticeable when driving.
The leather pants fit like a glove. The protectors sit where they belong and are not too stiff. The raised waistband is also suitable for a slightly larger belly, and the zipper does not pinch. Segura surprised me. The light Lady Carla women’s boot pleases with its very good fit and great workmanship. The two gloves in my set (Germot, Bering) are cut very tight and are intended for women with delicate hands. With my colleagues, however, they sat really well and had a great grip.
The jet helmet from Takai is pleasantly light, well made and, thanks to its “Ruby Red” color, a real eye-catcher. Unfortunately, it looks different with the counterpart of Nolan the end. It is much heavier to wear and I have to get used to the clasp first.
Great design, high-quality leather and top workmanship come together in the Held jacket Shina. The A-line cut ensures a good fit even when you sit down, and the side zips are even more comfortable.
The Kevlar jeans from Bering are particularly impressive on longer journeys thanks to their high level of comfort. The double-row button placket prevents the pressure point on the stomach. Unfortunately, Held’s biker boots are a bit too stiff. A particular shame: the leather is not properly colored and the toe quickly wears off.

The great enduro rider

Enduro rider outfit 1
The tall, slim Aileen cannot avoid tall sizes. But then it is also safe off-road.
No leather one-piece on the cross machine, that’s for sure! You wear a cross outfit on the slopes, and in the area of the StVO it can look casual. In addition to my size, my hair color also played a role in the selection of my outfit: therefore pink is not an option. Instead, I opted for a set from Fly Racing in petrol and yellow. First challenge: The top must fit over the Dainese protector jacket. Their plastic stem feels strange at first, but doesn’t bother at all while driving. All protectors are correctly positioned and the belt on the stomach provides support. And the neatly crafted jersey falls loosely over it.
The pants are tighter, but still fit well and have leather and mesh material incorporated in exactly the right places. And despite my long fingers, the gloves fit like a glove. The lightweight LS2 helmet continues the color scheme perfectly.
That leaves the boots from Fox: Since my toes fell asleep while driving, I advise: Better buy something bigger. Because apart from this little thing, they make a very good impression. A hoodie is welcome for the road, but only with protectors and Kevlar reinforcements. The black hoodie from John Doe offers all of this and is still as comfortable as a conventional jacket.
Unfortunately, the Difi pants didn’t harmonize at all with my legs: too tight on the thighs, the waistband on the back sticks out far. And I definitely wouldn’t have got any protectors in the pockets provided. Despite the name Lady, Bering boots thankfully do without pink. They can be quickly put on and sit very comfortably.

Lingerie? But with function
www.factstudio.de
From left: Germot F-Lite Megalight, Primero Polar, Rukka Mona, Dainese D-Core Dry Suit Lady, Primero Storm.
The market for women’s motorcycle clothing is growing. Almost every manufacturer now also offers functional underwear specifically for female proportions.
With well-fitting functional underwear, driving comfort can be increased. It should be compulsory even on warm summer days. Here it is worth taking a closer look at the size table, because this differs by up to four clothing sizes depending on the manufacturer. Like the Dainese D-Core Dry Suit Lady (99.95 euros, www.dainese.de), which had to be tested two sizes larger! Another drawback: neither zipper nor button placket in the crotch. In terms of workmanship and function, however, all sets are convincing. Our ladies were particularly impressed by Touratech’s lined Primero Polar underwear (jacket / pants 149.90 / 79.90 euros, www.touratech.de). It sits, warms and offers enough space for feminine curves. Even Rukka Mona (shirt / pants 49.95 euros each, www.rukka.de) and Germot F-Lite Megalight (shirt / pants 39.95 / 34.95 euros, www.germot.de) are convincing. Due to the high percentage of stretch, the smallest and largest in the test field are equally enthusiastic and saved themselves the need to go for short and long sizes. The Touratech Primero Storm (shirt / pants 69.90 / 59.90 euros), on the other hand, hardly differs from the men’s version and offers little support in the chest area.
Form beats color
www.factstudio.de
The Schuberths C3 Pro Women is specially designed for women.
Women’s motorcycle helmets? Supposedly there are many! But a little pink in the decor doesn’t change the fit. Schuberth’s C3 Pro Women is one of the few helmets whose shell shape is specially designed for women’s heads. The Held Scard is not just a men’s helmet with a female decor: its inner shell is based on a children’s helmet. In general, however, the different fit of different manufacturers is more decisive. Therefore: If a helmet doesn’t fit – just try another brand.
Goes to the kidneys
www.factstudio.de
Dane Brende kidney belt.
Motorcycle kidney belts especially for women are still a rarity on the market. Notable exception: the Dane Brende, which at first glance hardly differs from other kidney belts, but is very variable thanks to its additional back reinforcement and two extra Velcro fasteners and can therefore be adjusted to different hip widths. The simple design is also convincing. Due to the high proportion of neoprene, cold (driving) wind can be effectively blocked out and a cozy warmth cushion can be created. Price: 74 euros, can be obtained from www.motoport.de
Aim high
www.factstudio.de
High shoes instead of lowering them.
If the legs are short, a motorcycle can of course be lowered. Alternatively, high-heeled shoes can also help. With the right footwear, women can gain up to six centimeters in height. This often decides whether you fall over or stand securely. While Vanucci, Difi, Segura and Bering, for example, have classic heels, Daytona offers three women’s boots with an additionally raised insole.
But be careful with heels: Depending on the way from the footrest to the gear lever, women often get caught with the heel on the notch.
MOTORCYCLE conclusion
Typical woman is nothing at first. No, not even pink is typically a woman – even if some manufacturers have internalized that. There cannot be any universally fitting clothes. Our five MOTORRAD girls have set out to find clothing that is as suitable as possible, all with different prerequisites. It should have become clear that it wasn’t always easy. Nevertheless, it is praiseworthy that the market is growing and increasingly not only optically trimmed for women. Some product developers now deal very intensively with female characteristics in conception and construction. But: In this practical test, we have not yet found a manufacturer who is already doing everything right. In addition to the different figure types, different size charts make an all-round successful shopping experience more difficult. That’s why women usually can’t avoid trying out many brands and models.
