Test: The hot BMW F 800 R in a striking design

The young designer Pamela Baehr drew the Toxico Azureus in a more striking and radical way than ever before.

There has never been a BMW F 800 R on its wheels as conspicuous as this one. Young designer Pamela Baehr (30) drew Toxico Azureus radically differently, with large round headlights, sparkling spoked wheels and white and blue factory and warning colors: like the blue poison dart frog Dendrobates azureus. The fact that its generic name was changed to Toxico, “toxic”, indicates that this roadster has not only been refined visually, but also in terms of driving dynamics: Pamela calls the frog and motorcycle “small, toxic, lively”.

A power air filter from Blue, the hexagonal Remus sports silencer and, above all, the crisp, shorter gear ratio with a smaller pinion make the 85-hp in-line twin really work. It responds to every tiny twist of the throttle with a noticeable increase in thrust, accompanied by a robust, bubbling and barking sound in boxer style. The acoustic illusion is perfect. The optical of driving a completely new motorcycle, especially. There are reasons. Pamela Baehr has been studying industrial design since 2008. After completing her intermediate diploma, she was supposed to replace the Karl-Dall look of the roadster with a more aesthetic, classic round headlight with integrated original instruments as part of a three-month semester thesis at the BMW specialist supplier Wunderlich. Just like at the Munch 4 TTS 1200 Mammut.

D.oh what sounds so simple was “a real challenge”. The F 800 R could hardly be “retrospectively”. So Pamela developed a new concept: “futuristic retro design.” What sounds like a contradiction in terms runs through from the front fender to the rear panel.

Madness what it filters away. Externally original, inside there are cartridge inserts from a former IDM Yamaha R6. Where the cheap standard fork bounces and dampens rather clumsily and offers little reserves, responsiveness and puncture protection for around 2000 euros parts costs (!) Are now terrific. The Toxico Azureus is a sporty glider with a real braking bite!

Pamela is already planning a new motorcycle for her thesis, a cross between a supermoto and a street motorcycle. The next mutation, the next sweet poison.
