BMW R 80 G / S "Africa Shox" (2018) from Johnston Moto
BMW conversion from South Africa
Johnston Moto from South Africa has knotted the legendary BMW R 80 G / S and made the chic “Africa Shox” in a Dakar outfit.
It can be described as the most legendary machine from BMW Motorrad without major restrictions. In the 1980s she won four Dakar titles. It enjoys a special reputation among collectors and it is offered for quite lush sums on used market exchanges. And she is one of the great pioneers of what is currently the most popular motorcycle in Germany. But it is also in other places in the world R. 80 G / S a welcome companion. So also in South Africa. More precisely, in a small suburb of Cape Town. There is a nicely rebuilt 1982 model machine owned by Mark Johnston.
Displacement increased to 1,000 cm³
Mark Johnston bought the bike almost blindly from its former owner. The condition of the BMW R 80 G / S was not particularly important to him, as he wanted to replace most of the parts anyway. According to his own statement, the bike was in relatively good condition at the time. The first maintenance measure was to have Volker Schroer‘s engine in Port Elizabeth get the G / S engine running again. A Big Bore Kit from Siebenbrock increased the displacement of the BMW to 1,000 cm³. For the exhaust, a solution from Akrapovic was chosen. The manifold was individually adapted by Scorch Design.
Devin Paisley
The BMW R 80 G / S "Africa Shox" is only the second conversion by Mark Johnston.
Back home, the next step was to rebuild the chassis. Johnston Thing a 48mm upside-down fork from WP Suspension, which was originally used in a KTM 525 EXC. Similar to the engine, he also worked on the fork and fundamentally revised it. The matching triple clamp was supplied by Ian Ketterer from BlackSilver Customs. The front tires are also new, including revised brakes. In addition, the swing arm has been extended by almost five centimeters, so that there is space for a 140 mm tire at the rear. The shock absorber comes from a local spring element expert named Martin Paetzold.
Frame, seat and tank also revised
Johnston attached non-removable luggage racks to the redesigned rear frame. The original seat of the BMW R 80 G / S has been shortened a little and upgraded with new materials. The HPN rally tank was imported from Germany and repainted. The new paintwork is based on the Paris-Dakar machine. The headlight mask comes from the Paris-Dakar special edition of the BMW R 80 G / S. Incidentally, Johnston did not reveal how much the renovation cost in total. In any case, the result is impressive.
