Urban traffic and urban escape

With unusual solutions and refreshing courage, Aprilia explored every imaginable market niche in the 90s. With the Aprilia Moto 6.5, the Italians had a particularly strong idea on the subject of urban traffic.

It owes its rise to a serious motorcycle brand A.prilia successes in off-road sports as well as the evisceration of these successes through youthful 50s and 125s. So it’s no wonder that the first “big” machines to roll off the assembly line in Noale were enduros. They used the robust, but somewhat rowdy, air-cooled 350 and 600 single-cylinder from Rotax, but thanks to the good manufacturing quality they increased the brand’s fame.

Aprilia Moto 6.5 definitely doesn’t want to be enduro

The Frenchman designed a motorcycle to fall in love with with a light hand. Or to hate. Flowing lines from the headlights to the taillights, harmonious transitions between all components, strangely matt shimmering paint surfaces, even the tool compartment located on the right behind the cylinder turned into an object with a harmonious color and form. The two frame beams curve around the engine, which has been slightly modified compared to the Enduro, with a bold swing, and on the left and right the pretty oval tube swing arm with its practical eccentric axle mounts, two thin exhaust pipes open out into the open. The noise that they promise remains stuck in a spacious front silencer nestled under the engine and frame. Of course, this arrangement prevents the assembly of a main stand, but that’s the program: The design piece called Aprilia Moto 6.5 and presented in Bologna in December 1994 consistently opposes all previously known usage patterns.

Despite an upright seating position and wide handlebars, the Aprilia Moto 6.5 definitely does not want to be enduro. Not athletes anyway, but they also reject all-rounders due to insufficient pillion suitability. Semi-luxury foods are perhaps the most likely to hit it, although the nimble, nimble Aprilia is particularly popular among stressed city dwellers, as ordered.

The pragmatic, but not powerless, characteristics of the one-cylinder, throttled from 48 to 42 hp and very drinkable, are good for city traffic as well as city escape, which no longer gets its mixture from two performance-oriented 33 mm, but from a single 40 mm constant pressure carburetor from Mikuni. It comes out of the basement super, and of course it pushes the Aprilia Moto 6.5 easily to speeds above 120 km / h, at which its chassis oscillates quietly. Or where the cheap spring elements weaken on bad roads. But such a thing is of course unimportant with a cult object that has even been exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Monsieur Starck himself also increases the appreciation: a few years ago, in an interview with “Die Zeit”, he admitted that everything he had ever created was absolutely unnecessary.

scene

Not least in the MOTORRAD endurance test of a Pegaso 650, Aprilia’s five-valve engine proved its robustness, and its performance was rarely in doubt. In the Aprilia Moto 6.5 it already pushes 50 Nm at 3500 rpm – not bad for a single and ideally suited for the “new metropolitan biker”. This is how Aprilia named the target group for its brand new design piece in 1995, in order to phase out its production again in 1996 due to a lack of target group. But the Europe-wide unsuccessfulness increases the attraction for collectors and fans today, which is why a decent 6.5 easily costs 2000 to 3000 euros. Interested parties should make sure that the plastic parts and the exhaust system are intact.

literature

Since the Aprilia Moto 6.5 is more recommended for aesthetes anyway, a book about its designer may be of interest: Cooper / Doze: “Starck”, Taschen-Verlag, 9.99 euros. There is no technical literature.

Internet

Real love speaks from the devoted work of Peter Grabo, who delivers everything that Moto fans are looking for on his private website (www.grabo.de). Including links to an ingeniously prepared manual and an active forum.
