Joan Barreda won his fourth stage victory, crossing the finish line of the tenth special just 1min15 ahead of Cyril Despres. For the first time since the start, the Frenchman takes the lead in the rally.
Youth facing experience
Starting in the wheel of the title holder in Cordoba (Argentina), Joan Barreda managed to make the junction with Cyril Despres during the special of 357 km. Extremely fast, this stage was not very complicated in terms of navigation: the important thing was above all to be able to send big gas, which Despres and Barreda were able to do perfectly. !
The two riders engaged in a fantastic brawl, where the speed and passion of the Husqvarna rider were measured against the tenacity and experience of the KTM official..
Ultimately, Barreda will manage to reach the finish in La Rioja (Argentina) with a breath of advance over Despres: only a big minute separated the two duettists from this tenth day of racing. !
"We started strong with Cyril (Despres, Editor’s note), by sending", confesses Joan Barreda. "I thought I would catch up with him easily but he was going fast. Finally I joined him and we finished together. The stage was lively and pleasant before the refueling".
"It was a stony track, narrow, very enduro and very varied in the end", reports the Spaniard who only appears in 27th place in the provisional general classification, with more than three hours late, following the mechanical problems encountered. at the start of this 35th Dakar.
"I answer this every day and it’s good for the experience: it’s a shame to have had this problem at the start of the rally with the bike otherwise I would have been ahead, especially since I made no mistakes of navigation ", rightly underlines the HVA pilot: in view of the competitiveness he demonstrates, Barreda was one of the few pilots who could challenge the victory at Despres.
After winning his first special the day before yesterday (read our), this one confirms his rise to power by seizing for the first time the lead of the provisional.
The four-time Dakar winner dislodges his water carrier, Ruben Faria, who kept him "warm" !
"With a young and motivated Joan Barreda on my heels, we shouldn’t slow down and I managed to do it", welcomes Cyril Despres..
"The bike behaved well again and suffered less than yesterday. It is always so pleasant to slide for 360 kilometers without being scared".
"Selection is what makes the Dakar so rare and different from all other rallies: there are physically demanding stages, and there is a natural selection in relation to the level of preparation of the machines and the pilots ", he analyzes with philosophy.
"It is not the most important thing to think about recovering seconds in the general classification. What matters is to score points, to make a difference, to gain confidence and to break free. The classification, it comes automatically on the sheets on evening ", explains Despres.
Eighth in the stage, Despres’ teammate is second overall, 1min37 behind his leader: an ideal situation for KTM which also occupies the next two places in the provisional classification thanks to Lopez and Jakes! This top 4 "100% Orange" is ahead of Botturi’s Husqvarna and Rodrigues’ Honda.
