Ricky Brabec brings Honda back to victory in Dakar motorcycle 2020

Dakar - Ricky Brabec brings Honda back to victory in Dakar motorcycle 2020 -

Ricky Brabec becomes at the age of 28 the first American motorcycle rider to win the Dakar after an exemplary rally of regularity and two stage victories. The Californian’s success for the first edition in Saudi Arabia also marks (especially ?!) Honda’s return to victory, 31 years after that of Gilles Lalay ! Report and rankings.

Ricky Brabec, winner of stages 3 and 6, takes revenge on the fate which deprived him of success last year due to an engine failure while leading the last Dakar in South America. This year for the first in Saudi Arabia, the American did not experience any disillusion with his Honda, just like his teammates who also shone: Jose Cornejo won his second success by winning on the last stage, copiously shortened due to the construction of an oil installation near the route.

Honda finally wins – for the first time since 1989 – and puts an end to the incredible domination of KTM, which had won the last 18 Dakar without exception! The more rolling profile of the new course in Saudi Arabia benefited the speed of the CRF450 Rally, while KTM appeared more in difficulty especially after the abandonment of one of its leaders Sam Sunderland, winner – downgraded – of the step 4.

Change of tracks, change of hierarchy

The new tracks to be discovered on the Saudi tracks have also largely turned down the cards in favor of Brabec and Honda. The American was able to avoid major navigation errors, while taming the new format of the road-book: it was given to the pilots the very morning of the specials, already prepared, and not the day before as on the previous editions..

Dakar - Ricky Brabec brings Honda back to victory in Dakar motorcycle 2020 -

No more "mapmen" of the official teams who spent the night marking out the course and coloring the road-book for the benefit of factory pilots! Now everyone is in the same boat: official and private. Without forgetting the courageous "trunk-moto" riders, renamed "Original by Motul": the Roman Emanuel Geynes wins in this category without assistance in front of the French Benjamin Melot.

Added to this is navigation unanimously described as difficult, which trapped several top pilots: Price and Walkner from the KTM clan, Quintanilla from the "cousin" brand Husqvarna (KTM group), but also Barreda (Honda) who also suffered. a painful rib injury at the start of the rally. Result: Ricky Brabec forged himself 15 minutes in advance (!) From the third day and up to 25 minutes on the 10th day !

The Californian driver, imperial, then managed to resist the attempts of his rivals to return during the second week, in particular the thunderous return of Pablo Quintanilla who won stages 8 and 11 with style. The Chilean did not despair of continuing his ascent today, but the amputation of the last stage cut the rug out from under her…

"Today’s special had to be shortened following the construction of an oil facility close to the course," ASO reported shortly before the start this morning. "The competitors therefore have 167 km ahead of them (instead of 374 km, editor’s note) to make the difference one last time".

Honda overtakes – finally – KTM

This last "truncated" special then transformed into a short sprint of 1h30, in which Jose Cornejo emerged victorious with a small lead over Ricky Brabec and 2’25 over Toby Price. The HRC will have dominated this thrilling 2020 edition to the end, despite strong opposition from the KTM group.

"In the end, we put all the pieces of the puzzle together", comments Brabec on arrival. "We knew we could do it, whether it was any rider in the team. I’m extremely happy. It’s my 5th Dakar, but only my second at the finish … I woke up super happy to run this last stage and that’s it! I’m here, it’s won ".

“We had to be smart and focused every day,” continues the successor to Gilles Lalay, the last Honda winner in 1989. “There is no top leader in our team, everyone has worked well: we are a family. We all won ".

In total, Honda can be proud of six stage wins against three for KTM: two for Ricky Brabec (stages 3 and 6), one for Kevin Benavides (7) and Joan Barreda (10) and two for Jose Cornejo (4 and 12). The Austrian competitor stood out on stages 1 and 5 with Price and on stage 2 with Ross Branch. Sam Sunderland also scored a victory before being downgraded to Stage 4.

Six stage wins for Honda, three for KTM

Small consolation for "Katoche": his balance climbs to five successes if we add the two stage victories of Pablo Quintanilla (8 and 11) on his Husqvarna Factory, that is to say a KTM with the colors "HVA". Honda still retains the advantage, proof of the progress of the Japanese manufacturer on its painful Achilles heel of previous editions: reliability.

Dakar - Ricky Brabec brings Honda back to victory in Dakar motorcycle 2020 -

"I’m still on the podium, not exactly where I came for but I can be happy," consoles former defending champion Toby Price. "Every time I’m at the finish of the Dakar it’s on the podium. It’s a great achievement after these two very tough weeks. But I’ll be back in 2021 to try to win again".

If the Australian rider recognizes Honda’s superiority this year, he also believes he was unlucky at certain key points: "I lost 16 minutes with a bib-foam problem on my rear wheel, for example", recalls- he referring to his slow puncture at the start of the rally.

Price finished in third place overall behind Pablo Quintanilla, superb second despite a painful wrist following a fall early in the race. The Chilean conjures fate favorably, he who broke his ankle in the last stage last year: this painful fall had kept him away from the competition for seven months.

"I gave it my all, until the last mile," said the No.5. "It’s an incredible feeling. I just want to thank everyone, my team, my family and those who supported me. The race was close and even in 2nd position I feel like a winner.".

Nice surprises and confirmations

This new Dakar in Saudi Arabia also encouraged the emergence of new talents, such as the surprising South African Ross Branch who won stage 2 on his private KTM before regularly shining in spite of a sore shoulder after a big fall then a puncture that cost him several hours.

The Botswanan finished 21st at 4:23 am overall, but had the potential for a Top 10: what would give him access to a factory team? Same satisfaction for the Spaniard Jaume Betriu (KTM) who finished 14th at 3.30am: the first "Rookie" in the standings, just ahead of the rookie Jamie MacCanney, will be closely watched next year. !

Rather positive results also for Adrien Metge above, first French rider with the 12th place on his bike from Nîmes Sherco. Laia Sanz for her part won her "usual" first female pilot’s palm, in 18th position on her Gas Gas. Her closest rival, the Dutch Mirjam Pol, finished 41st, more than ten hours behind the Spanish !

Yamaha, big loser of Dakar 2020

One of the biggest disappointments of this Dakar 2020 is to be credited to Yamaha, whose two official riders were quickly hit by crashes. First Adrien Van Beveren, big favorite, who was on stage 3 again, then Xavier de Soultrait who badly damaged his wrist …

  • MNC of January 8, 2020 : Xavier de Soultrait abandons the Dakar 2020

Franco Caimi saves the honor in 8th position overall on his factory WRF450, far from the Yamaha clan’s legitimate ambitions for success. And for "VBA", the disillusion is all the more bitter as it is his third consecutive abandonment after his breakage last year and his bad fall in 2018…

The Gonçalves emotion…

The Dakar debate in Saudi Arabia

Finally, this first Dakar in Saudi Arabia will have been largely marked by the choice of this controversial destination by the organizer ASO … The oppressive and unequal regime of the kingdom and its violence, particularly against women, do not fail to raise the issue. indignation about this association with the Dakar.

For many, Saudi Arabia takes advantage of its immense wealth drawn from oil to "buy" a better image by organizing sporting events at great expense, as countries like Qatar did before it. We thus evoke a five-year contract at 80 million dollars between Riyadh and ASO…

"Saudi Arabia is a real dictatorship," protested Antoine Madelin of the International Federation for Human Rights. "It is a country where people are carried out with a vengeance. Last year, 180 people were beheaded, including a child".

"Today, women are in prison in Saudi Arabia, because they asked for the right to be able to drive, simply for that", he continues to our colleagues. "This concerns all the drivers of the Dakar. French companies, Amaury, just like the main media of the event, France Televisions, appear either as the first victims of Saudi propaganda, or as accomplices of this event. propaganda".

Pilots focused on sport, not politics

For others, like the official driver Adrien Van Beveren, the organization of the Dakar by Saudi Arabia is to be taken as an encouraging sign of openness of this country, as he explained to us in our report last spring..

  • Interview MNC Adrien Van Beveren :

"It’s a good thing, we are going to discover a new totally virgin desert and we must show that France is an open country ready to help others: we must give them a chance to express their desire to change," believes " VBA ".

The competitors especially retain the diversity of Saudi Arabia’s landscapes: the beauty of the scenery, especially in the ‘Empty quarter’, the largest expanse of sand in the world, takes precedence over geopolitical considerations and the defense of principles. After a few days of racing, drivers and teams even ended up kicking questions about this controversial destination….

"We can not ask people who participate in a sports competition to be the spokespersons for human rights problems in these countries: this is not our role," said France Info the former three-time winner of the Dakar, Hubert Auriol, whose words echo a position commonly defended in the bivouac.

Dakar - Ricky Brabec brings Honda back to victory in Dakar motorcycle 2020 -

Understandable in terms of sporting and financial issues: if a driver decided to boycott the event to express his disagreement, he would simply be replaced by another. Moreover, it is difficult to blame them for "turning a blind eye" to the societal context when they devote their lives to training with the sole objective of the Dakar. We ask Rossi and Marquez if they don’t mind competing in sumptuous races in Thailand and Malaysia, while a large part of the Asian population (on) lives in precarious conditions ?

It remains to be seen whether such an event will make people dream for a long time to come, despite its status as a showcase for motorsports, by dint of provoking so many disputes: between environmentalists standing up against what they consider to be a waste of resources, the associations which denounce the accidental deaths associated with it and now the voices that are raised to accuse him of promoting a dictatorial country and liberticides…
