BMW F 850 GS Adventure in the driving report
Two-cylinder in adventure look
BMW presented the BMW F 850 GS Adventure at EICMA 2018. MOTORRAD was already able to ride the adventure motorcycle for the middle class.
The stronger and taller BMW F. The 850 GS has already replaced the somewhat outdated F 800 GS travel enduro. For long-distance travelers, BMW is expanding the new series in the familiar manner with an adventure version. It celebrated its world premiere at EICMA in Milan.
Adventure with long-distance travel accessories as standard
In terms of drive technology, both versions obviously don’t give each other anything. In the Adventure, too, the new 853 cubic centimeter in-line twin-cylinder with 95 hp and 92 Nm torque remains. Only the starter and alternator have been designed to be stronger. The Adventure also takes over the riding modes of the normal GS as well as the options available with this. The maximum speed stated is 197 km / h. The sprint time should be 3.8 seconds. Alternatively, the Adventure can also be ordered in a version with 48 HP and 63 Nm for beginners. World travelers will be happy about the 90 hp variant with 86 Nm torque, which is designed for regular gasoline. The curb weight ready to drive should be 244 kilograms either way. The gross vehicle weight is 455 kilograms.

With a 23 liter tank over 550 km range
The differentiation takes place via new attachments. The BMW F 850 GS Adventure, for example, has a tank that has been enlarged to 23 liters and which, with an average consumption of 4.1 liters, should allow ranges of up to 550 kilometers. There are also adapted side panels. A larger windshield, which can be adjusted in two stages, as well as hand protectors ensure increased wind and weather protection. Wide enduro footrests, adjustable gear and foot brake levers, a 15 mm higher handlebar as well as an engine protection bar, an oil pan protection and a stainless steel luggage rack round off the standard equipment of the new F 850 GS Adventure. In addition to a basic variant, the new F 850 GS Adventure is also available in the Exclusive and Rallye style variants.

The ergonomics are good for off-road driving.
How these technically quite manageable modifications affect the road and especially the terrain, we could now take a closer look at the driving presentation in the deep south of Spain: On a pleasant off-road tour from Malaga to Granada.
The ergonomics continue to offer travel enduro-style comfort on long journeys with plenty of space, whereby the taller handlebars could be a touch too high for smaller riders in the long run when they are seated. In rougher terrain, moved while standing, everything fits together very well, your legs find a nice hold on the tank flanks, your boots on the excellent, grippy pegs. The F 850 GS Adventure is not a lightweight either, but the harmonious balance and the pleasant way in which the machine uses its long suspension travel make gravel trips and more fun. Fork and shock absorber respond wonderfully smoothly, so that the 850 remains very comfortable even off-road. Compared to the larger GS, the smaller 850 is the more comfortable motorcycle on asphalt.
The twin lacks a full thump
Bmw
First gear must be used in slow cross-country passages.
Motor-wise, however, the gap to the 1250 is quite large. The parallel twin with crank pin offset gained performance, revving and character compared to its predecessor, the F 800 GS, but all in all it is a very pleasant drive thanks to its clean throttle response and smooth engine running. He leaves the big flywheel, the tractor-like draft, the full thump to the big sister. The 850 GS needs first gear for slow passages that the 1250 easily treks away in second gear. Goal: The 850 has the better gearbox, the smoother clutch. However, the shift assistant only works satisfactorily in the upper gears. The new 850 engine is not bad on its own, but in the same price range the others have more displacement and so more sovereignty.
Equipment has its price
And otherwise? If you disregard the large 23-liter tank, which of course enables great ranges, which makes sense with such a machine with world travel requirements, everything stays with the usual, good 850-GS standard. The usability and functionality of the connectivity display are excellent, as is the readability. The driving modes, some of which are subject to a surcharge, the ESA, which is subject to a surcharge, the many, mostly subject to surcharge special equipment (heated grips, for example, or the excellently integrated navigation system) – all great, but not exactly cheap. Anyone who fully equips such an 850 GS Adventure quickly ends up in price regions that were previously reserved for the "fat" GSs. For real world travelers who don’t need the performance of the 1250 and who like to move off-road, the 850 is a (albeit not entirely cheap) one, thanks in particular to the large 21-inch front wheel that offers significant advantages off the asphalt. Alternative to the thick GS.
To have a lot of special equipment
Optionally, the BMW F 850 GS Adventure can be equipped with bench seats of different heights, a blipper, case holders for aluminum cases, various panels, LED daytime running lights, additional LED headlights, a 6.5-inch full-color TFT display with connectivity features, upgrade to an HP sports silencer, the electronic ESA chassis, keyless ride or the emergency eCall.
The BMW F 850 GS Adventure costs from 12,950 euros.
