BMW M 1000 RR
Fully focused on racing
With the M 1000 RR, BMW brings the first motorcycle under the M label. Consistently optimized for racing use in all areas, it forms the new basis for the desired success in the WSBK.
I.n the Superbike World Championship, BMW is following its own expectations. That should change in 2021. The aim is to judge a new basic bike, which has been extremely focused on racing use in all areas. The new BMW M 1000 R is thus virtually a homologation model and also the first motorcycle to be launched under the M label. In Bavaria’s car division, only the hottest variants of a series are ennobled.
Power and maximum speed increase
Bmw
In order to increase the circuit performance of the M 1000 RR, the chassis, engine and aerodynamics have been turned inside out. The four-cylinder is now allowed to rotate up to 15,100 rpm (plus 500), has a higher compression ratio, has new two-ring forged pistons, adapted combustion chambers, shortened intake stacks, longer titanium connecting rods and a further simplified valve train . Also new is the exhaust system made entirely of titanium, which saves 3.7 kilograms in weight. The new performance data are 212 hp (plus 5.5 hp) at 14,500 rpm and 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm. From 6,000 turns, noticeably more torque should be available, and from 13,200 rpm, even more power.
Bmw
For more traction, the sprocket increases from 45 to 46 teeth. The self-energizing clutch was removed from the slipper clutch for better racing starts. The pilot can zap through a total of seven driving programs, choose from two gas characteristics and set the engine drag torque. The traction control has also been optimized.
Bmw
All of this should of course be reflected in the driving performance. According to BMW, acceleration and pulling power in particular have been drastically increased. Up to 100 km / h, the M 1000 RR should accelerate 0.1 to 0.2 s faster than the S 1000 RR, and up to 200 km / h it should take 0.4 s away. A similar picture emerges with the pull-through values, measured in the 5th / 6th. Corridor. While the RR takes 2.9 / 3.3 s from 60 to 100 km / h, the M RR should only need 2.8 / 3.2 s. For the intermediate sprint from 100 to 140 km / h it should be 2.2 / 2.5 s (RR: 2.5 / 2.9 s) and for the interval between 140 to 180 km / h BMW gives 2.4 / 2.6 s (RR: 2.6 / 2.8 s ) we.
Winglets for the fairing
Bmw
The developers also saw potential in aerodynamics. In order to generate more downforce, BMW is now also entering the winglet games. Left and right, carbon wings in U-format grow out of the side panels of the BMW M 1000 RR. They should bring a whopping 16.3 kilograms (13.4 kg front and 2.9 kg rear) downforce at 300 km / h. The windshield was a little higher. The optimized upside-down fork and the revised central spring strut with blue spring and Full Floater Pro kinematics are also new. Overall, the chassis design with modified geometry, optimized wheel load distribution and expanded adjustability of the pivot point should be tailored even further to use on the race track. Compared to the RR, the steering head angle was set a little flatter to 66.4 °. The offset of the triple clamps has been reduced by three mm to now 26.5 mm. The caster increased accordingly from 93.9 mm on the RR to 99.8 mm on the M RR. At the same time, the wheelbase was extended to 1.457 mm. The length of the new, one-piece rear swing arm with beams is 618.3 mm (RR: 606.6 mm).
Other features include new, blue anodized M brakes with five mm thick 320 discs and carbon wheels developed with Nissin. The TFT display in the cockpit has only been expanded to include an M start animation and an interface for data transfer.
Lots of accessories and 5 kg less weight
Bmw motorcycle
If you still haven’t spent enough (money), you can also order the M Competition package. This means that additional software packages, carbon and aluminum milled parts, a lighter swing arm and the maintenance-free chain are transferred to the BMW M 1000 RR. Oh yes, a passenger package including a hump cover is also included. And while we’re talking about the comfort features: on board are cruise control, heated grips and a USB socket. There is less when it comes to weight: At 192 kilograms ready to drive, the M 1000 RR is five kilograms lighter than the S 1000 RR.
At the front, the indicators move into the mirror housings. The rear lights and indicators have been combined at the rear – so the lighting elements can be easily removed for racing in both cases.
From 32,168 euros
The new M RR is homologated in accordance with the FIM regulations for the FIM Superstock class and the FIM Superbike World Championship and will be manufactured in the minimum quantity of 500 units required for the World Championship and beyond. BMW calls the price 32,168 euros plus 390 euros for additional costs. The M 1000 RR also has a three-year guarantee and inspection intervals of 10,000 kilometers.
Conclusion
BMW continues to sharpen its superbike. The new M 1000 RR serves as a homologation model not only for the Superbike World Championship. On the other hand, the price is quite moderate at 32,168 euros.
