BMW R 1200 RT in the driving report

New water boxer in the touring galaxy

As the third water boxer model, the BMW R 1200 RT starts off into new touring galaxies with a new design and upgraded equipment. In terms of both form and driving dynamics, it is getting closer to the six-cylinder flagship BMW K 1600 GT.

The Spanish Señor holds his head out of the window of his seat. "Watercooled?" If, if, right. The new engine from BMW R. Like the 2013 GS, 1200 RT now has cooling water jackets around the combustion chambers. Combined with a higher flywheel mass of the crankshaft and alternator. Two discreet water coolers sit on the left and right in the new, sweeping full cladding. In addition, the cylinder heads are flown through from top to bottom instead of from back to front. BMW promised a maximum of 125 hp, just as many Newton meters. With the air / oil-cooled engine it was 15 HP and five Newton meters less.

The road mode is perfect when the sun is shining, so the “dynamic” mode is superfluous. With it, the electronically operated throttle valves are even more directly attached to the gas, the stability control allows more slip, and regulates more aggressively. BMW has bundled this third driving mode with a starting aid to create a special equipment package that is subject to a surcharge. The "Hill Start Control" of the BMW R 1200 RT is designed to make it easier to start up hills or downhill slopes: If the hand lever is used to brake heavily while the vehicle is stationary, the decelerating partially integral brake keeps the rear stopper locked until the driver engages first gear and engages. Then you need a little more gas to start driving, but you get used to it quickly.

The second world first for series motorcycles requires more adaptation: the optional “Pro” gearshift assistant enables not only upshifts but also downshifts without using the clutch. Under heavy loads at full acceleration, upshifting is a pleasure this way. Conversely, downshifting works amazingly well in push mode with the throttle closed thanks to the automatic double-declutching function. In the partial load range, the BMW R 1200 RT sometimes jerks hard in both shift directions, which takes getting used to.

Semi-active chassis as an option

Otherwise, the new BMW R 1200 RT is just the old one. It is perfectly balanced, swings wonderfully from one side to the other, stays precisely on course. A dynamic tourer par excellence. He should weigh 274 kilograms without extras and with a 90 percent full 25-liter tank, including standard suitcases, so no more than its predecessor. Even on German autobahns with full luggage, the travel tourer runs stoically straight ahead, with the speedometer reading 240 real 225 km / h. At 130 km / h, the crankshaft rotates a good 4500 times per minute. The boxer vibrates noticeably, especially at medium speeds, more in the handles than on the tank. But never annoying. The water flat twin runs nice and smooth.

The BMW R 1200 RT finally becomes a space glider thanks to the semi-active chassis as an optional extra. Equipped with Dynamic-ESA, the finely appealing spring elements easily fish out interference pulses of all kinds. The suspension comfort sets standards. When braking and accelerating, the self-regulating damping keeps the front and rear largely in balance.

High inclination freedom despite lowering

Great: the window, which has been newly optimized in the wind tunnel, fully shields under slight suction when it is raised. Even when set low, it protects the torso and shoulders without disturbing turbulence. However, it gets louder then. Handlebar halves, footrests and the height-adjustable driver’s seat have been lowered by two centimeters compared to the old BMW R 1200 RT, which is good for little tourists. Nevertheless, the lean angle is high.

Just like the seating comfort on the front and rear extended seats. They can be heated for extra euros, but heated grips are standard. Many functions of the on-board computer and perfect readability of its 5.7-inch color display make it a lot of fun to read while scrubbing for kilometers. The tour test over a good 2000 kilometers from Almería to Stuttgart follows in MOTORRAD, issue 5/2014. A lot of fun, the renovated space glider. Even at night, when the new LED headlights with optional daytime running lights are super bright. Not to be overlooked: A new star has risen in the touring sky.
