Driving report Aprilia Caponord Rally Raid
The ocher horse
Aprilia’s new adventure bike is based on the colors reddish brown / ocher. And fully off-road? a shot towards the BMW R 1150 GS Adventure.
Times have definitely changed. Take photos of cell phones, illiterate people write bestsellers, and heavy motorcycles put you on an enduro ride. Aprilia is now also following the latter trend. Just like the BMW team, the Italians provided their cozy big enduro with a sister that was suitable for long-distance travel and off-roading. So upgraded, the Aprilia Caponord Rally Raid weighs 268 kilograms with a full tank. Far too much for brisk cross-country rides? one should think.
Tuscany in April 2003. The sun is stinging, the wind is springtime, and a gravelly descent plunges into the depths in front of the front wheel of the Rally Raid. About a kilometer long. Off for that. A discipline in which the soft fork of the Caponord-Normalo version quickly reaches its limit. The spring travel of the rally fork, which has been increased by 25 to 200 millimeters, copes with this task much better in connection with rebound and compression stage regulation of the damping. Protects the driver from being hit by rough ground attacks and guides the wheel on the ground like a sniffer dog looking for a trail. The suspension could, however, use a little more hardness. On the rear wheel, however, it is almost perfect. Fully adjustable, the deflection with a new, progressive characteristic curve, the shock absorber masters all imponderables even in two-person operation.
Bottom reached. A lake with potholes winds its way around a lake
Ga special off-road paradise. Driving while standing is popular. Two high aluminum risers clamp a new butted aluminum handlebar and convey more rigidity and better off-road control. The seat height has increased by 20 millimeters to 860 compared to the standard version. A slight turn of the throttle is enough for explosive propulsion, at the rear for an inferno of stones. 98 hp in connection with a shorter first gear and a changed secondary ratio send greetings. The rally’s sprocket has 16 instead of 17 teeth. So much power has to be implemented first. This is what the rough Metzeler Karoo tries to do.
What works to some extent in the field is an unparalleled egg dance on the road. Inadequate cornering stability, insufficient steering precision, straight-line stability less than sufficient. For this reason, the Caponord Rally in Germany is delivered on the Metzeler Endurance, which Karoo gives as a bonus. For all those who find studded tires sexy or who are thinking about crossing Africa. What, according to Aprilia, the Caponord Rally was developed for. Hence the standard aluminum cases, crash bars, the reinforced engine protection and the somewhat more dynamic styling compared to the basic model. Why the Italians chose this subtle color combination remains uncertain. An ocher horse in distress hardly stands out from the dunes of Africa.
