In action: R 1200 GS Adventure

The adventurous two-wheeled tourist doesn’t get very far with change nowadays: At the current petrol price, around 45 euros are due at the gas station if it’s in the huge 33-liter tank R. 1200 GS Adventure is dusty. A consolation when you dig deep into your wallet: After that, you can first scrub extensively for kilometers, the colossus can always cover more than 700 kilometers at a time. That was already the case for the predecessor, and that will not change with the 2008 model of the enduro tanker. Its basic construction remains unchanged, but it got a slight facelift and the same technical changes as the basic model (see driving report R 1200 GS in MOTORRAD 25/2007). Five additional horses, now nominally 105 instead of the previous 100 hp, are certainly nice, but not necessarily knock the adventure rider off his feet. Because in the lower and middle speed range ?? and this is where a long-distance enduro is mainly moved ?? There is practically no difference between the new drive and its predecessor, only over 5000 revolutions does it get a little livelier. The fact that the maximum speed was increased by a few hundred revolutions should also not be a decisive purchase argument.

Sales of the new Adventure will start at the end of January.

After all, neither the torque curve nor the response behavior in the partial load range suffered from the slightly increased power, the soft, cultivated acceleration and the inimitable character of the air-cooled boxer are still inspiring. Its compression has currently been increased from 11.0 to 12.0. Nevertheless, the Adventure is still satisfied with super fuel, while the 109 hp R 1200 R demands the expensive Super Plus. The cylinder-selective knock control should ensure, despite the considerable compression for a 101 millimeter piston, that the boxer in GS and Adventure can easily digest poor fuel quality in distant countries.

Under pressure: stronger boxer with higher compression.

A triumph of motorcycles: the Adventure in full regalia

Like the basic R 1200 GS model, the massive Adventure also has the more powerful engine of the R 1200 R and the optional, electronically controlled Enduro ESA chassis. Although the electro-hydraulic ESA chassis costs 680 euros extra, long-distance travelers will hardly want to do without it. Because only a few motorcycles have to deal with such different loads and changing operating conditions, and thanks to ESA, the chassis can be easily adjusted without tools at the touch of a button. For example, the adventure driver can increase the ground clearance by two centimeters if necessary, if a wadi blocks the way in the Sahara. In contrast to the ESA of the street models, the enduro ESA also has an electro-hydraulic adjustment of the front spring base.

Playstation: handlebar position now variable, switch for ESA, ABS and ASC at the left end.

In any case, the Adventure has two centimeters more suspension travel than the basic version for more off-road suitability. Lifted by ESA, the seat height finally reaches dizzying dimensions, body sizes of around 1.90 meters are extremely helpful. Globetrotters will appreciate that, as with the 1150 Adventure, the shorter first gear is available again as an option. This makes handling easier in trial passages, especially since the overall gear ratio on the new model is slightly shorter. Under such conditions, it also protects the dry clutch, which has a limited load capacity. If the giant on wheels? with all the trimmings, the Adventure weighs a good 300 kilos ?? but if the driver loses his balance, he has a problem: only two people can lift him up again.
