BMW presented a completely new scooter in 2017 in Milan with the BMW C 400 X. It is the first BMW two-wheeler built entirely in China. It is now starting on the market at a price of 6,800 euros.

With the completely new BMW scooter VS. 400 X are entering new territory in the blue and white and unveiled their first scooter from the so-called mid-size range at EICMA 2017. The scooter, designed as a nimble city vehicle, has a 350 cubic, new four-valve single- cylinder engine. BMW gives its power with 34 hp at 7,500 rpm. at. The maximum torque is 35 Nm and is 6,000 rpm. reached. The maximum speed should be 139 km / h, the consumption is specified with 3.5 liters, the tank volume with 12.8 liters.

The drive torque is transmitted to the 14-inch rear wheel and the 150/70 tires installed there with a continuously variable belt transmission. At the front, a 35 mm telescopic fork guides a 15-inch wheel with 120/70 tires. The front is decelerated with a 265 double disc brake system with four-piston calipers. At the rear, a single-piston floating caliper dicks into a 265 disc.

The length of the C 400 X is 2,210 mm, the seat height is 775 mm (a lower bench with a seat height of 760 mm is also available as an option). The dry weight of the C 400 X comes to 193 kg, the payload is 201 kg.

The new BMW C 400 X is equipped with ABS, traction control and LED light, it should offer weather protection and the typical scooter storage space. The BMW C 400 X, which was completely built by the Chinese two-wheeler manufacturer Loncin, will also be available with connectivity as an option. Providing a helmet communication system, it enables the driver to make wired and, according to BMW, safe phone calls while driving, listen to music or call up the mobile phone’s navigation function on the large, colored TFT display, which then replaces the cockpit.

The practical features include two electronically lockable storage compartments in the cladding and the helmet compartment for two jet helmets under the seat. With the so-called Felxcase, the storage space under the pillion seat can be increased while standing. The shelf is folded out and offers space for a full-face helmet. However, the scooter cannot be started with the compartment folded out.

The basic price for the BMW C 400 X is 6,800 euros.

We were able to gather first impressions at the driving presentation near Milan / Italy. On the tour to Lake Como, it is less to complain than to praise: extremely snappy (ABS) brakes, stable, almost sporty chassis, high-quality haptics and very successful driver ergonomics. The optional TFT display with many connectivity options (600 euros surcharge) made a suitable impression.

The healthy-sounding single-cylinder with 350 cm³ and 34 hp is amazingly agile and at the same time confident. Despite the variator, the drive converts gas commands directly into propulsion. The sporty chassis set-up prefers smooth asphalt. the C 400 X can be thrown jaggedly in curves and never seems nervous.

So you can look forward to the first detailed tests and comparisons with competing mid-range models from, for example, Yamaha and Kymco – BMW can probably look forward to it calmly.
