Driving report BMW R 1200 RT
Lounge control
Pleasantly subdued atmosphere, cool beats around your ears and sitting on cotton balls ?? Anyone thinking of an exquisite hotel lounge is not far off the mark. BMW’s new RT is not only surprisingly dynamic, it is also extremely luxurious.
D.a one is stunned at first. Bavaria’s largest motorcycle manufacturer demands 15,100 euros for the basic version of the new one
R 1200 RT. Sure, suitcases and ABS are
included. And in view of this sum, dealers will refer to the insignificant price increase of 388 euros compared to the previous model, the R 1150 RT. This is acceptable considering that the 1200 is a new design. Nevertheless: Whoever orders the RT with full equipment,
flips 21,081 euros on the table. For 169 euros more there is the 1-series BMW in 316i-
Version. With air conditioning, five seats, ESP and 100 percent weather protection. The only disadvantage: it is not a motorcycle.
Munich, January 11, 2005. The cloudless sky is a Mediterranean blue,
five degrees plus. The key slips into the ignition lock, a push of the button, the boxer purrs, the idling speed fluctuates around 1100 rpm. Gloves, helmet, get on … Oops! The author measures 1.70 meters and the bench, which can be seated between 84 and 82 centimeters, is in the lower position. And unfortunately still too high for
secure footing. For smaller people it is recommended to mount the optionally available, low bench. With her you have the choice between 80 and 78 centimeters. Four or five traffic lights, sheet metal avalanches ?? Driving a serpentine line is the order of the day. And watch out. Because with suitcases, the RT is 98 centimeters wide.
After just a few hundred meters, you notice that the knee angle is in comparison
much more relaxed than the old RT. The clutch requires little manual force,
works exactly, but stinks enormously.
And the electric brake booster goes to work "more sensitively". The often criticized poor dosability has improved somewhat. The pressure point now seems a little indifferent. The most important change in the braking system: BMW is now using a semi-integral braking system in the RT as in the GS. At
When the handbrake lever is operated, both the front and rear wheels are delayed,
the foot only activates the rear brake caliper. Good in tight turns or
during turning maneuvers.
But now there is no turning. Now is the time to move forward. The last traffic light in Munich turns green. Gear in,
Clutch out. A sweeping up-
drive still, then it goes straight ahead
Italy. Second gear, 100 km / h, felt 40 degrees incline. Fan-tas-tic. Nothing grinds, nothing wobbles, nothing oscillates. Third, fourth gear, look in the immaculate rearview mirror and up onto the highway. Even more fantastic: no speed limit. So load through.
You don’t have to wear white and blue glasses to pay tribute to what is kicking happily in the cave of disguise. In numbers: 110 hp at 7500 rpm, 115 Newton meters at 6000 rpm. A Bavarian serial boxer has never been so strong. Never so agile. Nothing to me, nothing to you is 200 km / h on the speedometer. BMW specifies 225 as the maximum value. What fascinates about the new engine set-up is the spontaneous power output and readiness to pull through at any speed. Compared to the GS, the RT not only has ten horsepower
more ?? they also appear more aggressive. This is made possible by modified valve timing, higher compression pistons (12: 1), the
Raising the nominal speed by 500 to 7500 rpm and a larger intake and exhaust system. Justified question: Does this character fit a tourer of this category??
Yes. The set-up turned out to be very sporty, because the boxer only develops maximum performance shortly before the
Limiter intervenes, but over the entire speed range there is more than enough power for relaxed tours. Overtaking maneuvers on the motorway become child’s play. The ample torque curve even tempts the engine, despite its high revving power, preferably in the range between 2500 and 4500
Keep turns. Here comes that
typical boxer feeling, the new one conjures up the bubbling mystique of whole cow generations. She succeeds optimally up to a speed of 160 km / h. If you are on the move faster, you are constantly looking in vain for a next higher gear.
Cause: Like the GS, the RT is equipped with a "more active" transmission. That is to say, the sixth is designed as a driving gear and not as an overdrive. That would certainly not have hurt, from 6000 rpm it tingles despite the balance shaft in the handlebar ends.
Approach to the Brenner, left and right early spring, the mountain peaks all in white. The on-board computer shows minus two degrees. In moments like this, RT spoils you with a luxury atmosphere: Highway melody from the radio. Seat heating, almost too hot in level two. Heated grips, ergonomic and not oversized, cozy and warm. In addition, there is the newly drawn cladding. It almost perfectly protects the upper body and hands. The height of the disc is electrically adjustable over 14 centimeters and is effective. At high tempos, however, there is a suction in the highest position. And the one next to the window
Mounted antenna twitches around as if it were under 10,000 volts.
Italy draws closer with every blink of an eye. And the toll booths. Fumble out your wallet? the small, lockable storage compartment in the paneling could have been bigger. Then finally: Riva del Garda, first destination. Check-in in the hotel. The workforce rushes outside, eyeing the new travel giant. Typically Italian in the front, Japanese in the back, Bavarian in the middle, they say. But very much
dynamic. The face would be reminiscent of the movie Gremlins ?? little monsters ". May be. One thing is certain: it is a face in the crowd.
And this face shows even at minus four degrees in the morning
Smile. Problem-free starting at the push of a button, seat bench defrosted with built-in heating. In the event that the battery does not have full capacity and all consumers are switched on, the speed is automatically increased. Sounds like a car, doesn’t it? When it comes to electrics, BMW relies on CAN bus technology from the car sector. Only one cable harness, communication between all consumers via sophisticated electronics, automatic elimination of minor malfunctions. According to the manufacturer, this system is much less susceptible to interference than conventional cable harnesses.
Fully secured, we head towards Tremalzo. The street, partly only three meters wide, bordered on one side by knee-high natural stone walls, winds breathtakingly along the rocks ?? almost a
Pylon race. The 1200 RT is surprisingly handy and pleasantly balanced. Compared to the old one, she has lost around 20 kilograms in weight and is now expected to weigh 259 without a suitcase. Steering impulses are despite the
Defensive, relaxed seating position is surprisingly transmitted directly via the huge handlebars. Only in very tight bends does the front fold inwards and spoil the steering precision. In addition, load change reactions of the cardan are annoying. The mounted Bridgestone BT 020 harmonize very well with the ESA chassis.
This can be done while driving
electrically set in three variants at the push of a button: sport, comfort, normal. That works great. Nevertheless, the RT retains the character of a litter in every shot? Road and driver seem somehow decoupled. Well it may be the luxury,
in which one indulges. One of them is dazed. Away from the world. And one quickly
brought back to reality when it comes to paying. When cruising on country roads, an acceptable 5.3 liters rush through the injection nozzles, but the RT demands an expensive super plus. Who can afford the fully featured version probably doesn’t care.
